"Stone Adzes or Antler Wedges? An Experimental Study on Tree-Felling in
Northwestern Boreal Forest"
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010
7:30pm, Tom Oliver Theatre, ES 162, University of Calgary
Dr. Ray Le Blanc, Department of Anthropology, University of Alberta
Abstract: "Adze-cut stumps" is the name commonly used by local residents,
ethnographers and archaeologists to designate culturally modified tree
stumps that are found in many areas of the Northwestern boreal forest of
North America. As the name implies, they have been viewed as evidence of
ancient tree-felling activities, presumably using stone adzes, which
resulted in stumps with a characteristic, long tapering form that is quite
distinct from metal axe or adze cut examples. They are thought to be an
indication of pre-Contact period logging activities that preceded the
arrival of metal trade axes during the fur trade period. However, an
examination of available ethnographic data, personal field observations,
and particularly, the first results of an experimental tree-felling study
indicate that such stumps should best be interpreted as having resulted
from a different technique involving the use of antler wedges rather than
stone tools. Furthermore, field observations from the Old Crow—Porcupine
River area of the northern Yukon indicate that many of these stumps,
especially when found in clusters are associated with the construction and
maintenance of caribou fences, semi-subterranean housepits, and various
types of caches. Finally, recently obtained preliminary
dendrochronological results and radiocarbon dates indicate that these
stumps date back to at least the beginning of the second millennium AD.
