Description
Gender-based violence, or GBV, has many forms and many victims: sexual assault, intimate partner violence, femicide, and violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. The #MeToo movement highlighted the power of speaking up on a global scale, and From Red Dresses to Memory Stones is a necessary investigation of GBV activism in Canada.
Nicolette Little explores five vibrant multimedia projects: the REDress Project, which pairs donated red dresses with QR codes to draw attention to Canada’s crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls; the Disposable Red Woman mixed-media installation, with the same goal; a digital memorialization of murdered Ontario women each anniversary of the Montreal Massacre; the documentary Slut or Nut, covering one activist’s journey through a rape trial; and the Memory Stones Project, in which beach stones are painted with antiviolence messages, then shared over social media for maximum impact. Interviews with numerous activists challenge assumptions about GBV and those who commit their lives to raising awareness about it. Little’s innovative study provides new insights into these creative, daring, participatory, and commemorative ways of addressing GBV and the discourses that normalize it.
>From Red Dresses to Memory Stones is ultimately about hope, demonstrating that antiviolence activism is a matter of will and can be done in ways that prioritize consent and protect activists’ well-being.
While scholars in communications, media studies, gender studies, memory studies, and sociology will find this sensitive study invaluable, it will also appeal to a wider audience, including not-for-profit service providers, antiviolence advocates, policy makers, and other readers interested in or involved with gender justice.
