Hi Everyone,

In collaboration with the National Institute on Ageing and The Toronto Star, Journalism at The Creative School (TMU) is excited to announce a one year fellowship and up to 5 journalism prizes of $5000 to support journalism projects focused on ageing. (see fuller description below)

The paid fellowship is intended for a working journalist and lasts a full year (Jan-Dec 2024) at The Star. The recipient will be afforded opportunities to engage with Journalism at The Creative School on issues central to the theme of journalism and ageing.

The prize is open to students and they are encouraged to apply.

Please consider sharing with students, applying yourself, or sharing across your networks. Proposals that consider a diversity of experiences of ageing are welcome and encouraged.

The deadline for both the prize and fellowship applications is October 14, 2023. I am a member of the steering committee for both opportunities and would be happy to field informal questions.

Introducing the NIA - Toronto Star Journalism in Ageing Prizes and Fellowship Opportunities

This September, the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) and the Toronto Star in partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University are excited to announce two new Journalism in Ageing opportunities as part of their ongoing collaborative project in support of healthy ageing that began last fall.

The Journalism in Ageing Prizes will select up to five journalists who will each be awarded $5,000 to conduct a journalism project on the topic of ageing, which they will have one year to complete.

Each prize recipient  will be connected to experienced Toronto Star journalists as well as NIA researchers and experts in the field of ageing. This will allow the prize recipients to be supported by the Toronto Star’s journalism infrastructure, bolstered by the latest evidence and insights into the lived experienced of older adults from the NIA and its partners.

The Journalism in Ageing Fellowship will select one journalist who will work closely with established Toronto Star reporters on a full-time basis over a year to create meaningful journalism on ageing that will be featured in the Toronto Star, under its overarching journalism project entitled the "Third Act" www.thestar.com/aging<https://ryerson.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c21c7e4f5276f02cefdbcdef9&id=64ea1acdc6&e=af83b631ee>.

The Fellow will be supported by the Toronto Star’s journalism infrastructure and bolstered by the latest evidence and insights into the lived experiences of older adults from the NIA and its partners. Fellowship recipients, in consultation with the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Journalism, will be invited to engage with the School in ways appropriate to their background, experience and career interests.
