I’m pleased to announce that my new book, How To Read Like You Mean It, has been published (in open access and paperback) by Athabasca University Press. You can download it here: https://www.aupress.ca/books/120316-how-to-read-like-you-mean-it/.


This book opens where my last book ends (The Art of Communication in a Polarized World, also published by Athabasca). That book was concerned with how we change people’s minds, closing with the observation that we must open ourselves to the possibility that other people might change our minds, too. Hence my new book, which asks how we do this. How do we open ourselves to ideas that scare us because we don’t understand them?


I wrote this book in part to explore the weird ways metaphor works -- how its impossible literal meaning opens readers up to its figurative meaning, which we can explore but not pin down. I address the book like a letter to my students, especially those who give up when a reading frustrates them, when in fact that frustration is the starting point for dialectical thinking, rather than the more instrumental mode of reading they seem to prefer. (I wrote this book during the first part of the Covid-19 pandemic, and if you read between the lines, it's also a book about isolation and loss.)
