Applications Now Accepted for Carleton’s R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship

Carleton University is now accepting applications to the R. James Travers Foreign Corresponding Fellowship<http://www.traversfellowship.ca/> for a project to be completed in 2021. The application deadline is Monday, March 1, 2021 at 12 p.m. (noon) EST.

The fund was established to provide an annual award of $25,000 to cover travel, reporting and research expenses and a stipend for a journalist. It is administered by Carleton University through its School of Journalism and Communication<https://carleton.ca/sjc/> in the Faculty of Public Affairs<https://carleton.ca/fpa/>.

The coronavirus pandemic has turned the notion of international reporting on its head this year and underlined just how small the planet is. International news is local news and understanding the connections that link our neighbourhoods to the rest of the world has never been more critical and the challenges to Canadian public policy have never been greater.

The Fellowship will be awarded in 2021, but applicants should assume they may not be able to travel outside—perhaps even inside—the country and frame their applications accordingly. The 2021 award does not preclude travel but should not be dependent on it. Although physical travel may not be possible, these past months have shown us that creativity, fuelled by the necessity of virtual travel and communication, has resulted in powerful, compelling work that is accessible to a wider audience than ever before.

The fellowship commemorates the career and ideals of Jim Travers—reporter, foreign correspondent, general manager for Southam News, editor of the Ottawa Citizen, executive managing editor of the Toronto Star and national columnist for the Toronto Star at the time of his death on March 3, 2011.

Friends and colleagues of Travers established the fellowship fund to finance significant foreign reporting projects by Canadian journalists—staffers, freelancers or students—working in any medium. The Travers family enthusiastically supports the fellowship and is actively involved in its development.

The award reflects the importance that Travers attached to his six years reporting from Africa and the Middle East. He believed Canadians deserve first-hand, in-depth coverage of important stories outside our borders. He argued passionately that it is crucial for Canadian reporters to “bear witness” because in our interconnected world, “foreign” news is local news.

La Bourse R. James Travers accepte actuellement les candidatures pour les journalistes correspondants à l’étranger
L’Université de Carleton accepte maintenant les candidatures pour la Bourse R. James Travers pour un projet à compléter en 2021 en correspondance à l’étranger. La date limite pour les soumissions est le 1er mars 2021 à 12PM (EST). Les fonds ont été établis pour financer le montant annuel de 25 000$ qui couvre le voyage, les coûts des rapports et des recherche et l’allocation pour un journaliste. Ce projet est administré par l’Université de Carleton à travers l’École de Journalisme et Communication dans la Faculté des Affaires publiques.
La pandémie du coronavirus a complètement changé la notion du reportage international cette année et démontre bien à quel point le monde est petit. Les nouvelles internationales deviennent des nouvelles locales et comprendre les connections qui nous lient de nos voisins jusqu’au bout du monde n’a jamais été plus critique et les défis de la politique publique canadienne n’ont jamais été aussi importants.

La Bourse sera attribuée en 2021. Par contre, les candidats devront assumer qu’ils ne seront peut-être pas en mesure de voyager à l’extérieur et même à l’intérieur du pays et devront cadrer leurs candidatures en conséquence. La Bourse R. James Travers de 2021 n’empêche pas de voyager mais ne doit pas en dépendre non plus. Même si un voyage physique serait possiblement indisponible, les mois passés nous ont démontré que la créativité, alimentée par la nécessité de voyager et communiquer virtuellement, a abouti à un travail puissant et irrésistible qui est accessible à une audience encore plus grande que jamais.
Cette bourse commémore la carrière et les idées de Jim Travers, journaliste, correspondant étranger, gestionnaire général de Southam News, éditeur du Ottawa Citizen, l’éditeur exécutif en chef du Toronto Star et le journaliste national pour Toronto Star au temps de sa mort le 3 mars 2011.
Les amis et collègues de Travers ont établi les fonds boursiers pour financer des projets journalistiques étrangers signifiants par des journalistes canadiens : journalistes employés, pigistes et étudiants travaillant avec différents médiums. La famille de Travers supporte fièrement la bourse et est activement impliqué dans son développement.
La bourse reflète l’importance que Travers attache à ses six ans de reportage en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient. Il croit que les Canadiens méritent du contenu de première main qui couvre en profondeur les histoires importantes en dehors de nos frontières. Pour lui, démontrer l’interconnexion de notre monde est crucial pour les journalistes canadiens car «les nouvelles étrangères demeurent des nouvelles locales». I
