Dear colleagues,
The following CFPs might be of interest to some members of the list. With
apologies for cross-posting.
The 54th Annual Conference of the Canadian Sociological Association will be
held from Monday, June 1 through to Thursday, June 4, 2020 as part of the
Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences Congress, this year taking
place at Western University in London, Ontario. The CSA Conference theme
for 2020 is “Resisting Racism and Colonialism”.
The deadline for abstract is January 27, 2020 (11:59 PM – PST). Authors
will be notified by Feb. 10, 2020 if their abstracts were accepted. The
call for abstracts and list of conference sessions can be found here
<https://www.csa-scs.ca/conference/call-for-abstracts/>.
The (open) Sociology of Culture sessions include:
1. *Cultural Forms of Resistance in the City, on Reserves, and
In-Between: *An encouraging response to the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission “Calls for Action” has been widespread support from the
grass-roots to Canada’s federal level of government. However, as theories
of cultural change warn, there is a risk that widespread acceptance may
give way to saturation and a diminished sense of importance, in this case,
of the value of reconciliation. One way to keep the interest in
reconciliation alive is to look for real transformation in the form of
empirical research, whether field-, participatory, or activist in
methodology. This round-table session aims not only to keep the
conciliatory spirit alive but also to encourage further strategies for
critical analysis through the presentation of early-stage research having
to do with cultural forms of resistance in urban spaces, on reserves, and
in-between these spaces. This session invites papers that consider cultural
forms of resistance, broadly, as in the arts and music that deal, for
instance, with processes having to do with classicism, racialization and
colonization, and as practised in various spatial-temporalities. Papers
ranging from the theoretical to practicable are welcomed.

2. *Cultural Production and Culture Consumption:* This session explores
how cultural goods are made and circulate in society. We welcome papers
that deal with the production of art and culture and/or the consumption of
art and culture. Possible themes include but are not limited to:
understandings and evaluations of art; the relationship between art and
commerce; artistic and creative work and labour; cultural capital and/or
omnivorousness. *Organizers: **Allyson Stokes

3. *Cultural Theory:* This session invites papers that respond to issues
and debates in cultural theory. How is cultural theory defined? What is/is
not cultural theory? What is the contemporary status of cultural theory in
sociology? How is social theory and cultural theory brought together and/or
kept apart? But alongside these questions, we are witnessing a renewed
interest in cultural theory's capacity to address contemporary challenges,
from climate disaster to anti-immigration organizing to the increasing
economic uncertainties of cultural production. We welcome diverse
interpretations and approaches to the session’s theme; this includes
anything from papers on theoretically informed cases studies to papers on
theoretical lineages and reinterpretations. All theoretical orientations
are welcome. *Organizers: **Saara Liinamaa

4. *Culture and Inequality:* This session invites papers that examine
the role of inequality in shaping culture and of culture in shaping
inequality. Potential topics include: How does position within social or
economic hierarchies shape individuals' cultural repertoires? When and how
does culture affect social stratification? When and how do individuals use
culture as a source of social mobility? How do we value or devalue cultural
repertoires or strategies associated with particular groups? We welcome
papers from diverse methodological and substantive areas, as well as both
empirical and theoretical contributions. *Organizers: **Allyson Stokes
