STUDENT POSITION

LEARNING ASSISTANT



The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for student employees to serve as part-time Learning Assistants for the Engineering Academic Success Centre in the Winter 2018 term.  The Engineering Academic Success Centre (formerly known as DARC) is a space where Schulich students can congregate to study, interact, and get access to academic support resources.  The Centre includes space for independent and small group study, a seminar room for seminars and workshops, and four tutorial rooms for one-on-one and small group tutorial assistance.  The Engineering Academic Development Specialist works out of the Engineering Academic Success Centre, and advises on academic skills and challenges.

Learning Assistants will provide tutoring assistance and support for 1st and 2nd year engineering core courses as follows.  (Assistance and support in Program-Specific Upper-Year Courses may also be provided.)

Description:

Learning Assistants are student leaders who provide motivation for learning and act as a role model to their fellow peers.  Learning Assistants work with students one-on-one or as a group, to answer questions on course content, offer practice problems and provide study strategies.  Students will seek assistance on a drop-in basis.



Qualifications:

Learning Assistants are selected on the basis of academic skill, leadership, character and the ability to communicate well with others.  They are expected to have extensive knowledge about the subject and be able to communicate that knowledge to other students and peers.

All individuals in the Learning Assistant position must:

  1.  Be in good standing with the University of Calgary, and the Schulich School of Engineering;

  2.  Possess a mastery of the subject being tutored, having obtained an overall GPA of 3.00, and earned a B or higher in the specific course(s) they choose to tutor or in the approved alternatives as identified below (transcripts will be reviewed);

  3.  Be a senior-level undergraduate student (3rd or 4th year) or graduate student in engineering (or related area of study such as Physics or Math).

Completion of the My First Six Weeks or Skills for Success programs (offered through the Student Success Centre) would be an asset, as would completion of one or more Student Success Seminars.

Applicants should exhibit the following skill-set:

  *   Ability to maintain confidentiality;

  *   Ability to be empathetic to students having difficulties;

  *   Mastery of subject being tutored;

  *   Good overall academic ability;

  *   Exemplary communication skills.



Requirements:

Depending on the level of expertise and availability, applicants may assist in multiple courses.  Learning Assistants must attend a training session and commit to a minimum of two shifts / week during the school term, and a minimum of two shifts during the final exams period.  Tutoring shifts will typically be 2 hours in length (with an additional hour of paid preparation time).  When not tutoring students, Learning Assistants will work on projects as assigned by the Engineering Academic Development Specialist.

This position reports directly to the Engineering Academic Development Specialist.  The Engineering Academic Development Specialist supervises the Learning Assistant Team, under the portfolio of the Associate Dean (Student Affairs and International).



Responsibilities:

Learning Assistants (LAs) are expected to assume duties and responsibilities listed below.  LAs may be expected to perform other duties as required in their respective subject areas.

  *   Meet with students one-on-one or in groups to answer questions on course content, offer practice problems, and provide study strategies.

  *   Demonstrate academic integrity, especially when answering questions about assignments or other graded work.

  *   Assist with projects when not tutoring students.

  *   Provide availability to the Engineering Academic Development Specialist for scheduled shifts.

  *   Be punctual for scheduled shifts.  It is the responsibility of the Learning Assistant to notify the Engineering Academic Development Specialist if they cannot cover their scheduled shift due to an emergency or extenuating circumstance.

  *   Oversee and assist with Engineering Academic Success Centre operations.

  *   Complete bi-weekly timesheets online through Business Administration System in a timely manner, for appropriate payment.

  *   Report any problems or concerns to the Engineering Academic Development Specialist immediately.

  *   Serve as a role model for students seeking academic assistance.

  *   Follow the University of Calgary policies and procedures and behave in accordance with the School’s values and expectations.
