Help is on the way! Those antiquated theatres, lights that don't
work, dingy ceilings?
After decades of solid use, the engineering complex is getting
modernized.
This has been a long time coming, so it is an exciting time indeed!
The bad news is, it is going to be disruptive for a while.
When you come back from the holiday break, this work will have been
started.
So please take note of the following.
PHASE ONE
The first phase will last 18 months. Work will start this December 20
and be completed by March 31, 2011.
This phase will create "pinch points" with scaffolding and hoarding
in stairwells and hallways at several locations within the school, so
you may need to add five minutes to get around to classes or
meetings. This phase will:
1) remove hazardous materials from ceilings
2) install a sprinkler system backbone through the complex
3) upgrade lighting throughout the facility
4) renovate the teaching theatres in Block E (over the summer months)
5) renovate washrooms, providing more access for women
6) renew finishes in public areas
7) set the stage for Phase 2.
Information and signage on these work locations will be provided.
We have been assured, there will be no noise disruption during exams.
During removal of hazardous material, there will be no risk to the
building occupants due to the method used to seal off work areas.
PHASE TWO
Pending approvals and funding, the second phase will expand the
engineering complex with an addition that will occupy the firesticks
courtyard and integrate the existing blocks with a new central heart
for the engineering school. This construction is expected to begin in
2011 and will last for several years.
