On May 27, 2009, astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk commenced the longest space
mission to ever be done by a Canadian. He is currently on the International
Space Station conducting experiments on the effects of zero gravity on the
human body. He is set to stay at the ISS until mid-November, after having
spent almost six months in space! As a record setting Canadian astronaut,
Dr. Thirsk is probably the most well-known graduate the Schulich School of
Engineering at the University of Calgary has had to date.
On September 17 or 19, over 300 students will assemble on the ground to send
a visual message to the astronauts in space. The event is taking place on
the acreage of Soren Christiansen, a classmate of Dr. Thirsk's from his days
at the U of C. OSRAM (an international electronics company) will be
sponsoring the LEDs necessary to assemble 300 high powered light panels.
Students will be assembled into a grid formation on the ground, and on cue
will turn light panels on in certain groups to form an image. An airplane
will fly overhead capturing footage of student preparations and assembly, as
well as the event. Discovery Channel will capture similar footage on the
ground.
The Canadian Space Agency has given its full support. Dr. Thirsk has been
notified on the Space Station, and is aware of what is being organized. A
productions company has already been hired to put together a video of the
event, which will eventually be released on YouTube as well.
The last piece of the puzzle really is the students! We need 300 to 600
committed students to hold the light panels and be a part of this formation,
as well as approximately 50 additional students to serve as volunteers.
