Abstract:

The City of Calgary Water Resources engaged the City of Edmonton Drainage
Services to construct a 935 m long tunnel below 27 Avenue SW to provide
temporary storage of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding in the
 community of South Calgary.

The tunnel is 935 meters in length with an internal diameter of 2940 mm and
varies in depth from 20 meters at the east end (15 Street) to 42 meters at
the west end (20 Street). Construction was started on the tunnel entry
shaft in April of 2005 and the TBM (tunnel boring machine) was installed in
early August of 2005. Construction of the tunnel portion of the project was
 complete by June of 2006.

The presentation will describe why a deep tunnel was chosen as the preferred
method of controlling stormwater at this location. It will also describe
the probabilistic method used to predict the long term stresses on the
permanent tunnel liner and compare the predicted stresses with the results
 of on-going monitoring.
