European Contact in the Great Plains: A Bioarchaeological Perspective
The arrival of Europeans in North America represents a pivotal transition
that altered the biocultural landscape of a continent. While many studies
have generalised the contact experience as overwhelmingly deleterious,
others have suggested that interactions between Old and New World
populations may have been initially favourable in some places, including
the Great Plains of the United States. The primary objective of this
research is to examine temporal trends in the health status of Arikara
villagers that may be related to the arrival of European explorers and fur
traders in the Upper Missouri Valley. This is accomplished by comparing
biological stress levels among pre-contact and post-contact Arikara
populations, as indicated by the presence of enamel hypoplasia, porotic
hyperostosis, and cribra orbitalia. The results of this analysis will be
discussed in the context of varying subsistence strategies, dietary
intake, and disease loads and will also highlight the importance of
utilising both juvenile and adult remains in health analyses of past
populations.

sheet is now outside the office at ES 826.
4. Chacmool Conference
When: November 7-9th, 2013
Now is a great time to start thinking about the Chacmool Conference in
terms of presenting. If you plan on going to Graduate school note the
adjudicators look favorably upon people who have presented, so do funding
agencies☺ And what better place to do it than here! This conference
is the perfect place to give your first public presentation. Please see
the attached posters for more details.
5. Buckets of Change
Where: ES 826
When: When the door is open.
In the spirit of giving back, Chacmool will be collecting peoples pennies
and other small change. All money raised will go to First Book Canada, a
charity that distributes books and education resources to low-income
families across Canada with the goal of overcoming illiteracy. For every
$10 we raise, 4 books will be bought for children in need. Check out their
website: http://www.firstbookcanada.org/
If you were contemplating what you would do with all your pennies, this is
a great solution. Money can be dropped off at the Chacmool office until
April 1st.
6. Archaeology Shirt Day
When: Tuesday, March 5, 2013
Just a reminder that tomorrow is Archaeology Shirt Day The first Tuesday
of the month. If you have an archaeologically themed shirt, lets see it!
