Hi All,

Noon Hour Speaker - Wednesday, January 30th, 12pm in ES 859.
Sorry for the late notice, BUT the Wednesday speaker tomorrow is none
other than Megan MacLean - the Chacmool Social Co-ordinator. Hopefully,
you can come out and support her.

Title: A Question of Kings
In 1977, the Great Tumulus at Vergina, was uncovered by Greek
archaeologist, Manolis Andronikos. Within the Great Tumulus, four tombs
and a heroon were found. Tomb II was a grand barrel-vaulted tomb that had
survived intact since antiquity and was the grandest tomb in the complex.
Because of the richness of this tomb and its contents, Andronikos
suggested that the two occupants, a cremated male and a cremated female
skeleton, were Philip II, father of Alexander the Great and Philip II’s
last wife, Cleopatra Eurydice. However, since its discovery, Tomb II has
been subjected to a great degree of scrutiny and many have questioned
whether or not this tomb does in fact hold the remains of Philip II.
Currently, the strongest counter-argument is that one of Philip’s sons,
Arrhidaeus, was the occupant. A half-brother to Alexander the Great,
Arrhidaeus came to the throne after Alexander’s death in 323 B.C. and took
the name Philip III. This presentation will examine the current evidence
regarding the occupants of Tomb II.
