Encounters with Industrial Archaeology
Where do you draw the line on what is valuable archaeological information
and what is 'junk'? This depends largely on the context of the site,
situation and time, as well as the history, politics and background of the
parties involved. As a consulting archaeologist, decisions and lines have
to be drawn all the time. Industrial archaeology started mostly as a
reaction to developments impacting 'old' mines, mills, and factories
during the 1950s in Britain. These sites represented a part of Great
Britain's 'Industrial Revolution' and were icons of this history. Besides
preservation of sites, archaeology methods and techniques may be applied
to record, help evaluate and better understand these sites. Amazingly
little or no written information is available for some industrial sites.
The study of these types of sites can reveal innovations and technologies,
provide information on ethnic or social influences, and reflect economic
change or adaptations.

4. The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award
	Deadline: April 15th, 2013
Message from: Canadian Archaeology Association’s Student Committee (SC),

“On behalf of the SC I am emailing to inform students about The Daniel
Weetaluktuk
Award. This award, valued at $250, honors Daniel Weetaluktuk and may be given
annually to an undergraduate and/or graduate student at the Annual Meeting
of the
Canadian Archaeological Association. This year’s meeting will be held in
Whistler
from the 15th to the 19th of May (visit:
http://canadianarchaeology.com/caa/annual-meeting).
The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award would make a valuable addition to student CVs as
winning papers are also offered an opportunity for publication in the
Canadian
Journal of Archaeology.
In recent years relatively few applications have been submitted. It may be
that
few students become aware of the award in time for the deadline. For this
reason,
it is important to note that the deadline for application is April 15th,
2013.
For more information on the award please visit the CAA’s website
(http://www.canadianarchaeology.com/caa/about/awards/daniel-weetaluktuk-award)
or contact Dr. Gary Coupland (coupland at chass.utoronto.ca).”
