My name is Christine Cooling, and I am a PhD student and Research Assistant for Prof. Anne MacLennan at York University on the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant, "Interrogating Canadian Identities / Les identités canadiennes — une interrogation (ICI)."

We are hosting a conference to interrogate anachronistic and persistent images and ideas about Canadian identity that date back to 1967 and the celebration of Canada's hundredth anniversary. These conceptions, however, are often rooted in the historical conceptions of settler communities and this country's first one hundred and fifty-five years.

The conference is particularly interested in the continued impact of that past on contemporary views of what it means to be a Canadian, in light of changes to the Canadian population over five decades of immigration following the enactment of the Multiculturalism Policy in 1971; the Calls to Action stemming from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2015); movements toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion; and other shifts in the way Canadians understand their identities in the 21st century. Over the last five decades rapid change in constructions of Canadian identities have often failed to reflect historical tensions, including early conflicts with Indigenous communities, later frictions between/among settler communities, and the impacts of consecutive and various waves of immigration.

To examine the theme of Interrogating Canadian Identities / Les identités canadienne -- une interrogation (ICI), we welcome paper proposals in areas including, but not limited to:

• Canadian identities and culture
• Canadian media, policy, or representations
• Indigenous Peoples in Canada
• Canadian media history
• Diversity and inclusion in Canada

Submission Guidelines
Please submit an abstract of 250 to 300 words, along with a short bio (100 words), to https://amaclenn.apps01.yorku.ca/machform/view.php?id=8082 by June 8, 2026. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by mid-June.

The conference will be held in person from August 11 to 13, 2026, with options for hybrid participation over Zoom. La subvention Les identités canadiennes -- une interrogation (ICI) SSHRC organise une conférence pour interroger les images et idées anachroniques et persistantes à propos de l’identité canadienne qui remontent à 1967 et à la célébration du centenaire du Canada. Ces conceptions sont cependant souvent ancrées dans les conceptions historiques des communautés des colons et des cent cinquante-cinq premières années de ce pays.

La conférence s’intéresse particulièrement à l’influence persistante du passé sur la conception contemporaine de ce qui signifie être Canadien, compte tenu des changements survenus au sein de la population canadienne au cours des cinq décennies d’immigration qui ont suivi l’adoption de la Politique du multiculturalisme en 1971; des appels à l’action résultant de La Commission de vérité et réconciliation du Canada (2015); des mouvements en faveur d’une plus grande diversité, d’équité et d’inclusion; et d’autres changements dans la façon dont les Canadiens perçoivent leur identité au XXIe siècle. Au cours des cinq dernières décennies, l’évolution rapide des constructions identitaires canadiennes n’a pas souvent permis de refléter les tensions historiques, notamment les premiers conflits avec les communautés autochtones, les frictions ultérieures entre les communautés des colons et les impacts des vagues d’immigration successives et variées.

Pour examiner le thème de l’interrogation des identités canadiennes, nous acceptons les propositions d’articles dans les domaines tels que, mais sans s’y limiter :
· Identités et culture canadiennes
· Médias, politiques et représentations au Canada
· Peuples autochtones du Canada
· Histoire des médias canadiens
· Diversité et inclusion au Canada
