Armand Mattelart died on October 31. His analysis of the world and its transformations in relation to the development of means of communication was fascinating and even unique. He also had a wealth of fascinating experience and knowledge of Latin America, having worked for many years in Chile and, in particular, having participated for three years in the construction of the “Chilean road to socialism” following the election of Salvador Allende as president on September 4, 1970. However, he was forced to leave the country quickly due to the coup d'état of September 11, 1973, led by Augusto Pinochet with the support of the United States.

Armand Mattelart subsequently spent most of his time in France, becoming, among other things, a professor of information and communication sciences at the Université de Rennes 2 from 1983 to 1997 and then at the Université de Paris 8 from 1997 to 2005. Our research center, the CRICIS invited him to Montreal on several occasions, notably for the 2002 symposium “2001 Bogues. Globalism and Pluralism” thanks to Jean-Guy Lacroix and Gaëtan Tremblay, and then for the 2018 symposium on the widespread digitalization of our societies.

Armand Mattelart was not only a passionate and fascinating researcher who lit up every time we talked about emancipatory social practices, but also a most warm-hearted person. My thoughts go out to his wife, Michèle and his two children, Tristan and Gurvan.

Our colleague and friend Michel Sénécal co-authored a book with Armand Mattelart entitled Pour un regard-monde, dedicated to his career and life. The book was published in Quebec by Presses de l’Université de Montréal (https://pum.umontreal.ca/catalogue/pour-un-regard-monde) and in France by Éditions de la Découverte (https://www.editionsladecouverte.fr/pour_un_regard_monde-9782707166494) in the early 2010s.

Armand Mattelart est mort le 31 octobre. Son analyse du monde et de ses transformations en lien avec le développement des moyens de communication était passionnante et même unique. Il avait en plus une expérience et une connaissance des plus fascinantes de l’Amérique latine, ayant travaillé pendant de nombreuses années au Chili et ayant notamment participé pendant trois ans à la construction de la « voie chilienne vers le socialisme » suite à l'élection de Salvador Allende comme président le 4 septembre 1970. Il avait néanmoins dû quitter le pays rapidement à cause du coup d’État du 11 septembre 1973 mené par Augusto Pinochet avec le soutien des États-Unis (Les mêmes États-Unis sont d’ailleurs de retour de façon franche sur « leur » continent depuis quelques mois).

Armand Mattelart avait par la suite passé l’essentiel de son temps en France, devenant entre autres, professeur en sciences de l’information et de la communication à l’Université de Rennes 2 de 1983 à 1997 puis à l’Université de Paris 8 de 1997 à 2005. Le CRICIS l’avait invité à plusieurs reprises à Montréal, notamment dans le cadre du colloque « 2001 Bogues. Globalisme et pluralisme » en 2002 grâce à Jean-Guy Lacroix et à Gaëtan Tremblay puis lors du colloque sur la numérisation généralisée de nos sociétés en 2018.

Armand Mattelart était non seulement un chercheur passionné et passionnant qui s’allumait à chaque fois que nous parlions de pratiques sociales émancipatrices, mais également une personne des plus chaleureuses. Mes pensées à sa femme, Michèle, et à ses deux enfants,Tristan Mattelart et Gurvan.

Notre collègue et ami Michel Sénécal a co-écrit avec Armand Mattelart un ouvrage intitulé Pour un regard-monde consacré à sa carrière et à sa vie, opus paru au Québec aux Presses de l’Université de Montréal (https://pum.umontreal.ca/catalogue/pour-un-regard-monde) et en France aux éditions de la Découverte (https://www.editionsladecouverte.fr/pour_un_regard_monde-9782707166494) au début des années 2010.
