Summary: The media coverage of BRI projects and, more generally, the perception of China in South Asian countries are divergent and largely reflective of their geopolitical alliances with other superpowers. With some of the most recent large-scale political turmoil in the region, as well as the push-and-pull approach of American diplomacy toward South Asia, the question of a competitive Chinese engagement has garnered attention both in mainstream and social media.

In this talk, Rahman will identify some recurring trends by first situating the geopolitical challenges of the BRI within a brief historical and regional context. He then examines the reception of the BRI specifically in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh from a communication perspective. Finally, he discusses how these countries are responding to and re-negotiating their relationships with China and the United States, particularly in light of the ongoing global tariff war and the turbulent relations between these countries.

Bio: Dr. Anis Rahman is an Assistant Teaching Professor in Communication and an affiliate faculty member of the South Asia Center at the University of Washington, Seattle. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Simon Fraser University and an M.A. in Television Journalism from Goldsmiths, University of London. At UW, Rahman teaches information technology, global communication, and research methods courses. Rahman’s research interests encompass media, technology, and platform ownership, and their implications for journalism and the public interest in South Asia. He serves as the Co-Chair of the Public Media Group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
