In a post-pandemic world marked by growing socio-economic disparities, increasing regulation of universities by governments, geopolitical tensions, and climate change anxieties, engaging in a critical examination of what, how, and by whom communication and media studies are taught takes on a heightened urgency. Given the field’s fluid intellectual boundaries, how do we navigate teaching communication and media studies in such polarized times?

The collection of articles selected for this proposed special issue of the Canadian Journal of Communication aims to provoke a much-needed conversation about teaching in and about the field of communication and media studies through complex lived realities. Potential research topics include:

  * what constitutes “threshold,” or foundational, concepts to understanding communication and media and how to teach them in polarized times. Should the key threshold concepts change in the light of the current historical moment?
  * pedagogical and curricular approaches to defining and engaging with issues relating to, among others, race, decolonization, gender, social justice, intersectionality, political polarization, disinformation, rising authoritarianism, climate change, and the simultaneous need to foster relevant literacy skills and competencies
  * the interrelationship between teaching and research, particularly in complex historical moments

Editors Sandra Gabriele, Daniel J. Paré, and Sandra Smeltzer invite proposals that outline the intervention the paper seeks to make, include a preliminary bibliography, and are approximately 500 words in length.

Deadline for proposals: Friday, May 3, 2024
