Dear Colleagues,

I'm writing on behalf of myself, Ian M. Cook, and Hannah McGregor with an invitation to participate in a different kind of peer review. We’ve written a manuscript for a book entitled Podcast or Perish: Peer Review and Knowledge Creation for the 21st Century. In it, we argue that existing models of peer review can be exclusionary and isolating, and that podcasting can be used as a form of peer review that makes knowledge creation more collaborative and public-facing. We also argue that podcasts are, and should be considered, a form of scholarly knowledge production. So we’re experimenting with the peer review process for this book, which we would like to be more open, collaborative, discursive, and publicly available.

We invite you to read our draft of Chapter 1 (the Introduction) and make comments about it directly in the draft<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mb1steDyD-VbtKD0rd7RBPOU9tT5rdLgDRKx1nj2m9w/edit?usp=sharing>. You will also be able to read and respond to any other comments made by other peer reviewers, because we think conversations are so important when it comes to peer review and knowledge creation. You can choose to leave comments anonymously or to sign in to your Google account and make your identity known. There is also an opportunity to fill in a brief peer review form if you wish to do that instead of, or in addition to, your comments in the draft document.

If you'd like to participate, we request that your comments and/or review are completed no later than February 14th, 2023.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you very much for your consideration.

With best wishes,

Lori Beckstead

Ian M. Cook

Hannah McGregor

I don’t expect you to respond to my email outside of your working hours. In the interest of health and wellbeing I value flexible working patterns. If I have asked for a response, I look forward to it when you are next working.

Toronto is in the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory’. The Dish With One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples, Europeans, and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty in the spirit of peace, friendship, and respect.
