This is very disappointing news on many fronts, but there is absolutely
no doubting that it is the correct call to make. Many thanks and much
gratitude to all who were involved in organizing and planning what
definitely would have been a fantastic conference. I look forward to
seeing you all at CCA 2021

Dear CCA members and friends,
I hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy during this
difficult time. I have been admiring the resilience of my colleagues
across the country as they adapt their classes to allow students to
finish the term.
Apologies in advance, as this is a longish message. I generally try to
keep it short, but there is a lot of information to share. I am writing
today as Congress has recently announced that it will not go ahead with
an in-person meeting at Western University. Congress has asked
associations to consider whether they would like to do an online
conference.  Many associations have already opted not to do so. The CCA
executive has discussed this option at length and has made the difficult
decision not to go ahead with an online version of the conference. This
means that CCA 2020 is canceled.
 As I am sure you will agree, one of the best things about Congress is
meeting up with friends and colleagues from across the country, and
attending panel sessions and engaging in dialogue with peers, not just
at CCA, but also at the other associations that many of us are
affiliated with. In addition to attending panel sessions, a benefit of
Congress is learning from our amazing keynote speakers, meeting at the
Annual General Meeting (AGM), and celebrating our annual CRTC Prize,
Mahmoud Eid Graduate Prize, Beaverbrook Media Prize, and Gertrude J.
Robinson Book Prize winners. We do not believe the benefits of attending
and participating in the CCA conference can be replicated online, and
the experience is complicated by the virtual option. For these reasons,
it is difficult for us to ask our members to pay the Congress fees.
 If you have already registered for Congress, your registration fees
will be refunded 100%. Please request your refund by the Federation
deadline of April 30, 2020 by contacting congress at ideas-idees.ca.
 We realize that many of you will have renewed your CCA membership in
anticipation of attending Congress. For those who have renewed between
November 15, 2019 and March 31, 2020 we will extend the length of your
membership from one year to two years at no extra cost to you.
 The CCA Board will meet virtually in the coming weeks to develop a
plan to move forward. We will try not to flood your email, but we will
be in touch with more detail shortly.
 I want to thank Tanner Mirrlees, the 2020 Conference Chair, for all of
the hard work that he has already done to prepare us for Congress 2020.
I also want to thank Sandra Smeltzer and Romayne Fullerton, our local
area coordinators at Western University along with Lisa Henderson, who
helped us to secure an excellent venue for CCA 2020. The cancellation of
CCA 2020 is a very difficult and disappointing outcome for all. We had
prepared a fantastic four-day conference, with four daily blocks of
seven high quality concurrent sessions featuring 375 established and
emerging communication and digital media studies researchers from
universities across Canada, and internationally as well. The work
everyone put into this is much appreciated.
We value your membership in CCA and look forward to staying in touch.
We hope to see you again at Congress 2021, which will be held at
University of Alberta May 29 to June 4, 2021.

Chers membres, chères membres de l’ACC, amis et amies,
J’espère que vous et vos familles êtes en sécurité et en bonne santé
durant cette période difficile. Je tiens à exprimer mon admiration pour
la résilience dont font preuve les collègues à travers le pays alors
qu’ils et elles adaptent leurs cours afin de permettre aux étudiants
et aux étudiantes de terminer le trimestre.
D’abord, toutes mes excuses pour la longueur de ce message. Je suis
généralement brève dans mes communications, mais il y a beaucoup
d'informations à partager. Je vous écris aujourd’hui alors que la
Fédération des sciences humaines du Canada a annoncé le 19 mars
qu’elle n’irait pas de l’avant avec un rassemblement en personne à
l’Université Western à London, Ontario. À la suite de cette annonce,
la Fédération a demandé aux associations si elles souhaitaient organiser
une conférence en non présentiel, via des plateformes en ligne. De
nombreuses associations ont déjà choisi de ne pas le faire. Le conseil
exécutif de l’ACC a longuement discuté de cette option et a pris la
difficile décision de ne pas aller de l’avant avec un événement en
ligne. Cela signifie que le colloque de l’ACC 2020 est annulé.
Je pense que vous partagez comme moi le sentiment que l’un des aspects
les plus agréables du Congrès est la possibilité de rencontrer amis et
amies, collaborateurs et collaboratrices et collègues de partout au
pays, d’assister à des tables rondes et d’entrer en dialogue avec les
collègues de la communauté universitaire, non seulement au sein de
l’ACC, mais aussi au contact des autres associations. En plus de la
possibilité de dialoguer au sein et autour des tables rondes, le Congrès
permet de tenir de conférences d’honneur, de se réunir lors de
l’Assemblée générale annuelle et de célébrer les récipiendaires de
nos prix annuels, celui du CRTC, le prix Mahmoud Eid Graduate Prize, le
prix Beaverbrook Media Prize et Gertrude J. Robinson pour le meilleur
livre. Nous sommes d’avis que les nombreux avantages de tenir la
conférence de l'ACC en présentiel ne peuvent pas être reproduits en
ligne. Pour ces raisons, il nous est difficile de demander à nos membres
de payer les frais d’inscription au Congrès.
Si vous avez déjà acquitté vos frais de participation au Congrès des
sciences humaines du Canada, vos frais d'inscription vous seront
remboursés à 100%. Veuillez demander votre remboursement avant la date
limite de la Fédération du 30 avril 2020 en
contactantcongress at ideas-idees.ca.
Nous sommes conscients que plusieurs d’entre vous ont renouvelé leur
adhésion à l’ACC en prévision de leur participation au colloque de cette
année. Pour ceux et celles qui ont renouvelé entre le 15 novembre 2019
et le 31 mars 2020, nous prolongerons la durée de votre adhésion d’un an
à deux ans sans frais supplémentaires.
Le conseil d'administration de l’ACC se réunira au cours des prochaines
semaines afin d’élaborer un plan d’action pour la suite. Nous tenterons
de ne pas vous submerger de courriels, toutefois nous vous contacterons
avec des détails supplémentaires dans les prochaines semaines.
Je tiens à remercier Tanner Mirrlees, l’organisateur du colloque 2020,
pour tout le travail acharné qu’il a déjà accompli afin de préparer
notre événement annuel. Je tiens également à remercier Sandra Smeltzer
et Romayne Fullerton, nos coordinatrices locales à la Western
University, ainsi que Lisa Henderson, qui a également facilité la tenue
de notre colloque sur le campus. L’annulation du colloque de l’ACC 2020
est une conséquence difficile et décevante de la crise actuelle pour
tous et toutes. Nous avions préparé un colloque fantastique sur quatre

concurrents de haute qualité. Nous attendions 375 chercheurs et
chercheuses en communication et en études des médias numériques de
partout au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde. Le travail de ceux et
celles qui ont participé à son organisation est sincèrement apprécié.
Nous apprécions la confiance que vous accordez à l’ACC et garderons
contact avec vous. Nous espérons vous revoir au Congrès des sciences
humaines 2021, qui se tiendra à l’Université de l’Alberta (Calgary) du
29 mai au 4 juin 2021.
