Thank you to all who attended the Minors in Civil Engineering Lunch on Wednesday, January 29th. I hope you have a stronger idea regarding your degree path, no matter which year you are in. For those who could not attend due to class or another conflict, I have attached the presentation slides to this email here. Read through it to learn more about all of the minors and concentrations you can explore in Civil Engineering! Please keep in mind: concentrations are streams within Civil Engineering that you can direct your fourth-year classes to reflect; this is not something you register for; the concentrations display which classes you may want to take if you have a specific interest in that field. Minors are formal specializations - you may apply for minors at the end of your first/into your second year (Biomedical, Digital, Energy and Environment), or at the end of your third year (Structural, Transportation). Please do not hesitate to reach out to me via email with any questions about selecting a minor or learning more about any field! Dear Students, This is to make you aware that this upcoming academic year, F25/W26, there is an option for a dedicated entrepreneurial capstone design project (ENGG 503/504). For this course, the teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For such projects, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential, and the objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start-up companies, new technologies, new services, etc. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company up or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform that students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project. The following programs: electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics, have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments will automatically get credit for taking this course in lieu of their departmental capstone course. For other departments, approval from the department must be sought in order to secure credit. In close partnership with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, a unique course structure is designed to expose the students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. Last year, there were funds up to $2,400 for each team to support the projects, provided by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking and TD Insurance Sponsorship. There will be similar support in place for the upcoming academic year. There are also several awards for teams that do well, with an opportunity to pitch in the Hunter Hub LiftOff!event at the end of the session. Ideally, you should have an idea, form a team and register in the course. If you have an idea but not a team, or if you are interested in this stream, but do not have a clear idea to work on, you should also register in the course. The course instructor will help the students to form/join teams within the first three weeks of the Fall classes. Many of you are already aware of the great resource that is the Civil Engineering Homeroom. For those who aren?t, it is a student commons room (with a couple perks ?) located at ENF 305 that is reserved for students in the Civil Engineering Major. The room is an excellent place to collaborate with others, grind solo, make new connections, or just relax and regroup after a tough exam! Some of you may remember a time when a simple code would grant you access to the room. However, moving forward, access to the room will come through your UniCard. Once set up, you will be able to scan your card on the door and be let right in! To gain access to the homeroom through your student ID, please fill out the form LINKED HERE. I?m sure you?re wondering about those perks! Well, here they are: 1. Coffee Station * There is a Keurig Coffee Maker, K-Cups, and paper coffee cups at the front of the room available for you to use in need of a pick me up. * We ask that students who intend to use this service give a donation to our Coffee Fund of around 50 cents for each coffee they drink. Contribution to the fund will not be enforced but we ask for it so that CEUS can continuously provide the service throughout the year. * Please be respectful when getting your coffees and let?s all work together to make sure that the coffee station stays clean. 1. Snack Bar * At the back of the homeroom there will be complimentary snacks for students who are feeling a bit peckish. * This supply will only be replenished 2-4 times throughout the year. * At the snack station you will find Welches, Goldfish, and some Granola Bars. If you have any recommendations for future snacks, please send them HERE. A note on room cleanliness: An inevitable byproduct of offering snacks and coffee is an increased production of waste in the room. There is a waste bin near the coffee station, and we ask that all students be responsible for disposing of the waste they create from snacks and coffee there. There are also two waste bins in the hallway outside of the room which have options for recycling and compost. We ask that students continue to practice responsible waste disposal and use those bins when more appropriate. Maintaining the cleanliness of the home room is important to ensure that the space remains an inviting place for students to work and socialize. Here's a map to help you find the civil homeroom located in ENF 305: [Image.jpeg] If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at ceus at ucalgary.ca.
