David Malda explores the potential of landscape to connect people to the land and to each other through the land. By focusing on building relationships among the people and places that already exist, our work can support broader initiatives for belonging rather than simply adding another new thing. This idea of "working with" begins with taking the time and care to understand what is already here, how it came to be the way it is, and then crafting strategies for the future from this foundation. David will share this approach through recent projects including Hemisfair Civic Park in San Antonio, TX. As a former World?s Fair site that had become disconnected from the daily lives of residents, the park?s redesign focused on drawing together multiple narratives of the land to enhance everything that already existed around it and creating a new gathering place for all of San Antonio. Don?t forget to include the name of the student(s) you are nominating, their year of study, and their email in the letter of motivation. Community Leadership and Involvement Award The Community Leadership and Involvement Award recognizes students who are leaders in the Civil Engineering Community. Students who receive this award must show leadership in and out of the classroom within their peers. Involvement in student run clubs helps demonstrate the students? leadership and involvement. They take initiative to engage with peers and act as a beacon to other students. These students lead their peers inside and outside of the lecture and bring extra support to groups while working on their own schoolwork. Involvement in technical clubs further demonstrates the students? engagement outside of the classroom. Participation in educational activities, like the DIALOG bridge competition, also illustrates academic excellence. The Community Leadership and Involvement Award honors students who exemplify leadership within the Civil Engineering community. Those who receive this distinction showcase leadership qualities both inside and outside the classroom among their peers. Active engagement in non-technical clubs not only underscores their commitment to leadership and involvement but also aligns with the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the Civil Engineering community. Engineering Spirit Award This award recognizes students who take engineering values outside of the academic realm and into the real world. There are many events and extracurricular activities that happen on and off campus, and these activities offer opportunities for both personal and professional growth to become a well-rounded student. Engineering spirit is encapsulated by the volunteer work and connection in communities outside of the university. Engineering spirit can be shown in the students? participation in volunteering with associations such as Engineers Without Borders or other associations that embody engineering values. These students are factors in the community within the University as well as outside of the University. For more information, please contact Dr. Colin Dalton (cdalton at ucalgary.ca) Dear Students, This is to make you aware that this upcoming academic year, F23/W24, there is an option for a dedicated entrepreneurial capstone design project (ENGG 503/504). For this course, the teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For such projects, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential, and the objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start-up companies, new technologies, new services, etc. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company up or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform that students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project. The following programs: electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics, have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments will automatically get credit for taking this course in lieu of their departmental capstone course. For other departments, approval from the department must be sought in order to secure credit. In close partnership with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, a unique course structure is designed to expose the students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. Last year, there were funds up to $1000 each to support the projects, provided by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking. There will likely be similar support in place for the upcoming academic year. There are also several awards for teams that do well, with an opportunity to pitch in the Hunter Hub Launchpad event at the end of the session. Ideally, you should have an idea, form a team and register in the course. If you have an idea but not a team, or if you are interested in this stream, but do not have a clear idea to work on, you should also register in the course. The course instructor will help the students to form/join teams within the first three weeks of the classes. These Schulich spaces are now called Engineering Collaborative Learning Commons (ECLC) and based on available space, there are two models for spaces: * Model A ? a single space available to all department students during opening hours * Model B - includes B1 as a smaller space that is available for students during normal hours and B2 as a larger space that will normally be available to students after 3 p.m, when not scheduled for classes. The goal for our ECLC spaces and the specific layouts is to promote a positive learning experience for everyone who uses them. It is important that the spaces remain tidy for all students, and that the classroom spaces are left unchanged (no furniture movement) for next-day scheduled courses. The department-specific rooms can be found below: * Biomedical Engineering ? ENG 107 (B1) and CCIT 211 (B2) * Chemical and Petroleum Engineering ? END 05/05A (B1 under construction and will open when complete) and END 02 (B2) * Civil Engineering ? ENE 128 (B2) and ENF 305 (A) * Electrical and Software Engineering ? ENA 106 (A) * Energy Engineering ? ENA 121 (A) * Geomatics Engineering ? ENE 131 (A) and ENF 325 (A) * Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering ? ENA 131 (A) * Engineering Physics and Sustainable Systems Engineering ? ENB 08 (B2) * Minor Students - ENE 132 (B1) As a reminder, the Schulich Studio Learning Commons in ICT 216 is available for all engineering students to study and work on group projects. We have also renovated ENC 25 to be a teams and clubs working space. Access to these spaces is through your UCalgary ID card, which will be completed after add/drop dates. We would like to invite you to an open house at each ECLC from 10 a.m. ? 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. This will give you an opportunity to see the spaces and provide feedback. Light refreshments will also be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. We look forward to seeing you then and wish you all the best as you return to classes. This scheduling change is intended to support student progress for Winter courses where the Fall course serves as a prerequisite. Taking the deferred exam in early January allows students to make informed decisions about their Winter 2025 course load before the add/drop deadline of the Winter semester. The course ENCI 461: Mechanics of Solids and Structures has been selected for this early deferred final exam pilot project, as it is a prerequisite for a Winter term course. If your request for a deferred exam in this course is approved, you will be scheduled to write it between January 6-10, 2025. For details on the deferred final exam schedule, please visit this website. You can apply for a deferred exam through your Student Centre. Regards, Jennifer ________________________________ From: Tokarz, Julia Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2024 4:22 PM To: Jianxun (Jennifer) He Cc: Galbraith, Taylor Subject: WSP Information Night for Students [?EXTERNAL] Hello Dr. He, I am a Water Resources Engineer with WSP and a 2019 graduate from U of C?s Civil Engineering program (I believe you taught me hydraulics and advised on my capstone which was a Flood Mitigation Study in Sundre, AB). A handful of us from WSP are hosting an event for students interested in pursuing a career in Water Resources Engineering, Hydrogeology, and/or Water Quality. I was hoping you might be able to share this information with your engineering students. The target audience is 3rd year students and up, but all are welcome. Information about the session is outlined below and can be shared: The WSP Water Management Business unit is hosting an information session for University of Calgary students on Nov 27 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the Life Design Hub (MSC 171). Pizza will be provided (Please RSVP at the link below so we have enough for everyone) The business unit consists of the following working groups, if any of these groups sound interesting to you, please RSVP using the link below: * Hydrogeology includes physical hydrogeologists, groundwater modellers and geophysicists. If you are interested in the collection and use of a variety of datasets (groundwater well testing, groundwater quality, groundwater levels, groundwater- surface water interactions, etc.) to gain a better understanding of a hydrogeological setting, and predict how future work (for example, mining) may impact this setting, this may be a good fit for you. * Water Quality includes teams that specialize in design and implementation of water quality monitoring programs, development of water quality models, environmental impact assessments, permitting, stakeholder engagement, and understanding effects of discharge on aquatic life. If you are interested in understanding how direct inputs and/or other influences like climate change may impact the health of a water body and its uses, this may be a good fit for you. * Water Resources Engineering includes engineers and technologists that apply practical hydraulics, hydrology and water science solutions to real-world problems through engineering studies and design/construction of water management infrastructure. Practitioners in this field are typically civil or environmental engineers with a background and special interest in hydraulic modelling, hydrologic assessment, climate change, civil engineering design/construction or mine water management. If you are interested in river engineering, coastal engineering, flood prediction/mitigation, water management infrastructure design/construction (e.g., dams, dikes, channels, spillways), hydrometric monitoring, or mine water management, this might be a good fit for you. Info session RSVP link: WSP Information Session / University of Calgary WSP also has job postings for these teams that would be suitable for new grads, please check out our career website here: Job Opportunities | WSP Thank you!
