Subject: Online learning extended
Dear Schulich Students, Post-docs, Staff and Faculty,

I wish this message wasn't necessary. There have already been so many challenges since COVID-19 entered our lives nearly 2-years ago, and now as a result of the Omicron variant, we face more changes and challenges. I share your concerns and offer my compassion.

As you learned this morning through an email from the University of Calgary President Ed McCauley, Winter Term Classes will continue online, and are now expected to resume in-person on February 28, 2022.

For the Schulich School of Engineering, we will not offer any course component that requires students to be on campus until February 28, 2022.

That means there will be no in-person (on-campus) course components over this time period for engineering courses, including in-person labs. In some cases, planned in-person components, like labs, may be changed to virtual experiences.

We plan to keep student workspaces, including computer labs, in the engineering buildings open during this period, subject to the COVID-19 situation and with all COVIDSafe Campus requirements being observed.

The Engineering Student Center will remain open virtually. That is, student advising will be virtual for this time period, and questions can be answered through engginfo at ucalgary.ca<mailto:engginfo at ucalgary.ca>. MEng Graduate students seeking advice can connect virtually with our MEng Office through meng at ucalgary.ca<mailto:meng at ucalgary.ca>, and thesis-based graduate students should reach out to their supervisors. Staff who have questions or concerns should reach out to their managers, while faculty members should contact their department head. Department Admin Offices and the Dean's Office will also remain open virtually.

Student clubs and team spaces will be unavailable except under exceptional circumstances. Should there be an urgent operational need, team leaders should reach out to our SSE Student Experience Manager Emily Wyatt.

All makerspaces, including Zetta, will be closed during this period. Remote access to some equipment, such as our 3D printers will continue. Capstone course projects and undergraduate and graduate students working on research projects that require the use of the makerspace during this period should reach out to Sean Mason (SSE's Technical Services Manager, sean.mason1 at ucalgary.ca<mailto:sean.mason1 at ucalgary.ca>).

Classes are scheduled to resume in person on February 28, 2022, and students will be expected to attend campus to complete their courses. The university's vaccine directive remains unchanged.

This is another difficult situation caused by the virus and its current transmissibility. I hope the University's decision to extend online classes will help stem the spread of Covid within our community.

During this challenging time, please do everything possible to look after yourself and those close to you.

Sincerely,

Bill
