Dear Civil Engineering Undergraduate Students,
Our department faculty, staff and TAs are excited to welcome you back to campus in just over a week from now. Prior to your arrival, we wanted to reach out and let you know what your timetable and classes will look like.
For all 3rd and 4th year students:
All of your in person ENCI classes will take place in a new Civil Design studio located on the 1st floor of E block, ENE 122/128. This is a bright and airy room that will be equipped with tables and chairs in groupings of 4. This room will also have multiple screens, the technology to both zoom in and zoom out, and a dedicated technology assistant to support both faculty and students. The room is in the final stages of renovation and we can’t wait to see the finished product.
If you are attending “in person”, which is the majority of you, then your schedule will look like the excel timetable attached here. Key components of the schedule are:
1.In person days (TR & Wed labs for 3rd year; MWF for 4th year). During class time, you will have the opportunity to attend lectures and work on active learning (i.e. solve problems, etc) with the assistance of the instructor and TA team.
2. Remote delivery days (MF for 3rd year; TR for 4th year). On these days, your ENCI courses will be delivered via zoom using synchronous lectures. Please check D2L and log in according to the timetabled schedule.
3. “grey” time blocks. These are just placeholders in the schedule, thought I’d keep them in for convenience in case you are registered in a minor.
4. non-ENCI courses. Please check your updated schedule to see mode of delivery of these courses.
For fully remote 3rd and 4th year students:
Some students need fully remote access to the course due to covid related reasons. For the 400 and 500 level ENCI courses, you must be registered in the “remote only” section, which is often lecture section L02 and associated tutorials and laboratories. Please contact engginfo at ucalgary.ca<mailto:engginfo at ucalgary.ca> if you require this option.
Full remote students will have the same timetable as attached, but will attend synchronous zoom lectures in place of in person components. Please see D2L or check in with your instructor for what this looks like for each course.
For 2nd year students:
Please check your schedule for non-ENCI courses, your schedule should be updated early next week to reflect any changes to teaching modalities.
For ENCI 317, we are happy to welcome you in person. Remote learning will be supported for this course - there is no requirement to register in a different section, please just let the instructor know at the beginning of the term.
Study spaces:
We recognize there will be a need to find a space to study, work, collaborate, and maybe connect to another zoom lecture. Here are some of the spaces available.
The civil design studio ENE 122/128 will be available to for ENCI students when it is not in use for our classes. Feel free to use this space to study, work on group projects, etc before, between or after classes.
Other spaces available for ENCI students will be ENE 323 (there will graduate level classes in this room at some times, all undergraduate and graduate students are free to use the space when there are not classes in progress). There are also 3 bookable collaboration rooms in ENE 323, feel free to book these for group projects (i.e. ENCI 570) - details on how to do a booking will be circulated at the beginning of term.
ENF 305 will be the civil engineering home room, open to ALL ENCI students - this room will have a set up of tables and chairs to facilitate a casual connection space.
ENF 122/126 computer labs will have some programming in them, and will be available to all ENCI and GEO students when not in use for classes.
Finally, feel free to find a quiet or connected space in our engineering complex or across campus.
Covid regulations:
We have heard there are many questions around masks, how vaccination documentation and covid testing will work, where (and how) you will eat! Our faculty and staff have many of the same questions - We are sure we will get updates from central soon on how this will all work.
Considerations:
We are asking that all students, faculty and staff be empathetic to the needs and concerns of others. Faculty may have children under the age of 12, or students have siblings in this category, or live with/interact with individuals whom have higher covid risk. Everyone has a different situation and different comfort level. Thus we ask you follow all the university regulations. Also consider checking in with your teaching team, student groups, etc to determine how to best connect - options may range from zoom meetings, emails and discussion boards, to in person connections.
New Undergraduate Course:
Ending on an exciting note, we'd like to draw our 4th years attention to a new Civil Engineering Undergraduate course. Details of the course are attached and please feel free to reach out to Dr. Saidi should you have questions on the course and if it’s a good option for you.
Concerns/contact:
Should you have any questions or concerns about your schedule, the first place to seek help is the Engineering Student Centre(engginfo at ucalgary.ca<mailto:engginfo at ucalgary.ca>). An email with advising times was sent earlier this week. For items such as pre-requisites, courses to graduation, please reach out to Dr. He, our Associate Head Undergraduate Studies (jianhe at ucalgary.ca<mailto:jianhe at ucalgary.ca>). For course specific concerns, your first point of contact is your course instructor.
For 2021/22 the 3rd year academic coordinator is Dr. Zhou (qi.zhou1 at ucalgary.ca<mailto:qi.zhou1 at ucalgary.ca>) and 4th year academic coordinator is Dr. Saidi (ssaidi at ucalgary.ca<mailto:ssaidi at ucalgary.ca>).
If you have more general concerns or feedback, I am always happy to hear from you directly (jhayley at ucalgary.ca<mailto:jhayley at ucalgary.ca>) or you can connect with your CEUS executive (ceus at ucalgary.ca<mailto:ceus at ucalgary.ca>).
Once again, we are looking forward to welcoming all of you back to campus for an exciting and dynamic year.
