The CSCE Team has been working hard in the background to organize numerous fun events to connect you with the Civil Engineering Profession. Who is CSCE? The CSCE (Canadian Society of Civil Engineering) is a learned society created to develop and maintain high standards of Civil Engineering practice in Canada and to enhance the public image of the Civil Engineering Profession. The University of Calgary?s Student Chapter, led by our Co-Chairs Aster Lau and Crystal Hon, will provide opportunities for you to discover Civil Engineering outside of just an academic setting. Through our numerous social events, you will be able to connect with professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students. To be a part of all our events, you must be a member of CSCE. How can I join CSCE? It?s simple, and free. Just click on the following link and fill out the form. Fun fact, did you know that CSCE doesn?t acknowledge our University? It?s true, the University of Calgary is not accredited, but ?Adamson University of Calgary? is. So when filling out your form, just lie like you?re in an interview and say you went to a prestigious institution. [image.png] What?s the Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition? The Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition is an annual event where participants must design and create a bridge made out of only popsicle sticks and glue. Points will be awarded based on the bridge?s structural integrity, optimization of materials, innovative ideas, and aesthetics. Participants who perform well will be awarded up to 5% in ENCI 451 Structural Engineering I. Fortunately this year you do not have to visit Sait (famous for not being a University) as the competition will be held online. Participants can choose to compete solo or in groups of 2 to 4. To be able to compete, all participants MUST BE MEMBERS OF CSCE (sign up here, same link as above). More details to come so stay tuned. Sounds fun, can I join? If you are in Second Year then you?re in luck. We are looking for candidates to be the voice for Civil Engineering?s 2nd year students. Your duties will include: * Voicing the concerns of 2nd year students * Providing a unique perspective during discussion * Introducing new methods of engaging the student body * Helping the club with day to day tasks * Following me on Twitter to help boost my clout If you are interested, please fill out the attached form and email it to CSCEUC at gmail.com by Friday, January 30th. The construction projects and processes of tomorrow will be different than today?s. This presentation will focus on the drivers of these changes and how the industry is coping and adapting to meet the new reality. Speaker: Kees Cusveller is a construction professional with more than 35 years of experience, Kees began his career as a project coordinator, moving his way through senior project management and into Corporate and Senior Management roles, providing leadership and direction to multiple operational and corporate groups. Kees has an MBA from the University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Commerce (with distinction) from the University of Alberta, and a Construction Engineering Technology Diploma from NAIT. He is a past executive of the Canadian Construction Association where he chaired both the General Contractors Council as well as the Gold Seal Program. A frequent speaker at industry and educational events, Kees is a lifelong learner and passionate about the construction industry and its role in society CSCE Calgary Section is also planning some exciting events for the rest of 2021, stay tuned for more information to come. Zoom Link: https://ucalgary.zoom.us/j/91621617371 [image.png] What's this about? The CSCE Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition is an annual event where teams can compete against fellow students to design and construct the most innovative bridge. The challenge? How well can your technical knowledge translate into the real world. The bridge can only be constructed using only the provided 100 popsicle sticks and glue and will need to adhere to the specifications outlined in the rulebook. At the end of the competition, your bridge will be submitted to our organizers on Campus. If you wish to also receive the bonus %5 in ENCI 451, on the day you submit your bridge, you will also need to send us a 2 page report detailing your design process through email. On competition day, a panel of virtual judges consisting of Industry Professionals and Professors will assess the design and workmanship of the bridge. But the most important judge of them all will be the "Load Test", and I heard he doesn't sugarcoat his criticisms. How do I register? * Registration is first come first serve through Google Form, which will open after the info session tomorrow (attending tomorrow's event will give you a better chance at securing a spot). * The registration fee is $5 per person, made through an e-transfer to csceuc at gmail.com (please send the amount after we have confirmed your placement). * Each team will consist of 1 to 4 members, however due to Covid protocols, they cannot build the bridge together. Exceptions will be made if team members share residency. * Each team will receive a Building Kit containing 100 popsicle sticks and 1 bottle of glue. You may not use any materials that were not included in the supply kit, each bridge will be limited to 100 popsicle sticks. Why am I getting this email again? True story, my first experience with Halloween began in Kindergarten. In the middle of class, the teacher announced "okay, you can put on your costumes now". I kid you not, I witnessed who I once called my best friend, turn into an actual trademarked Ninja Turtle. At the time, I didn't know what was going on. But all I knew was that I wanted to be a part of it. I scribbled down the date in my diary. But still having difficulties with high numbers, I wrote down 13 instead of 31. Come next year, I was ready. My parents tried to persuade me it's actually on the 31st, but I was stubborn. It made sense, 13 was THE scary number. I suited up, headed to class with nothing but my Lorax costume. ... Dear god it WAS the 31st. In a sea of background characters, I was the center of attention in every room I walked in. The costume didn't even look that good, I had to explain it every time. Eventually, they just gave up and started calling me the hairy orange. That name stuck for weeks. This reminder, it's my little way of preventing another incident on my watch from happening again. These impacts have led to continued struggles for organizations and industries to adapt to the new reality imposed on them by the pandemic. A common symptom among industries like transit, is a downturn in demand for their services often resulting from a lack of rider confidence. The reduction in transit ridership during the pandemic can be attributed to many factors including increased prevalence of working from home (WFH), social distancing, rider apprehension and various other governmental directives. Rider safety as it relates to virus spread has become more important with the prevalence of the COVID-19 and has further increased the need for designs that mitigate the spread of the virus. The purpose of this project was to retrofit or redesign various transit elements specifically within train stations to improve the level of social distancing in these areas as well as quantify the levels of disease transmission risk within stations. This was done using a simulated model of Marlborough station using the software Vissim with various designs implemented within, the outputs of this design contained certain variables such as pedestrian density and travel time which were then used in a risk function to assess the benefit of these designs in mitigating the risk of COVID-19 disease transmission and compared to the cost of these designs. Final designs were selected after exploring various alternatives using this model and analysis. A critical aspect of this methodology is that the models could be used to monitor further changes to the transit system as well as test other potential designs by simply changing design elements and altering the inputs which allows for greater flexibility and reproducibility. Autonomous Mobility on Demand [https://mcusercontent.com/d699f125c15829e3f15b19b35/images/919bd745-1c6b-e55e-b3db-e7494d2756ba.jpg] Abstract: With the advent of autonomous vehicles, rideshare apps, and electric vehicles, a new system of transportation is emerging from the nexus of these three technologies, called Autonomous Mobility on Demand (AMoD). Autonomous electric vehicles will be integrated as rideshares into the transportation system of cities, overhauling the dominance of individual owner-driver internal combustion vehicles in cities today. This process will be led by an alliance of different companies such as Tesla (AV and EV), Uber (rideshare), and Google (AV) with municipalities worldwide. For cities to integrate this new and disruptive technology into transportation networks, their effects must be analyzed and changes to current networks should be made to optimise the transition. This report outlines the result of quantitatively and qualitatively assessing the effect of AMoD for inner Calgary and makes infrastructure and policy recommendations to develop a future transportation network that enhances quality of life. We developed three pick-up drop-off (PUDO) designs by utilizing researched literature with each design having a unique configuration and layout depending on traffic parameters. We examined potential risks around implementing a project of such a large magnitude, created curbside designs for PUDO points and assessed their effectiveness, and mapped out optimized network locations for the various curbside designs provided. A simulation using MATSim was developed to compare the numerical data of a base network and followed up by three different models which were utilized in an iterative process to plot variations of the PUDO locations and street design on a map of the entire network until optimal solutions for both vehicles and pedestrians converged in the indicators of the software output. The final optimized network ensures increased walkability and active mode alternatives, reclaimed green space, improved environmental quality, and increased safety in the network as analyzed by the aforementioned simulation outputs, cost estimation comparisons, and reclaimed area measurements. Project Team Members and Presenters: Anastassia Alexeeva Anastassia is a 5th year civil engineering student with a minor in transportation engineering. She is personally very interested in work and research involving planning city and road infrastructure such that it can accommodate increasing populations with environmental goals at hand. Autonomous mobility from this project had started out as simply driverless cars but has grown to be an analysis of full, interactive, complex networks and she is proud to be part of a team and institution that allows for exploration of greener spaces, active living, and sustainable futures. Nasir Ahmed Nasir is a final year civil engineering student with a minor in transportation engineering and has a keen interest in how our transportation and urban systems function, evolve, and impact city lifestyles. He was deeply interested in the system effects of autonomous vehicles and rideshare tech synergizing, and through this project he was not only able to explore the emerging system effects but also design a street network to maximise its livability, sustainability and equity possibilities. Hamzah Naeem Hamzah is a recent graduate from the Civil Engineering program with a Minor in Transportation Engineering and received the 2020 Transportation Association of Canada Scholarship for my achievements. He has an interest in emerging technologies and wish to pursue a career exploring the sweeping changes they will bring. This project allowed him to explore smart mobility as a socially equitable, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable solution. He is grateful to have been a part of this team and am excited about the future of transportation! MD Asif Shahriar He is a 5th year Civil Engineering Student with a minor in transportation. He has a keen interest in transportation engineering and how it affects our everyday lives. This project takes a look in a theoretical future where all manual cars have been replaced by autonomous vehicles. It has been quite the journey to discover the effects and results of our simulation and provide recommendations on the data we were able to produce. Mharvic Cambi Mharvic is a 5th year civil engineering student with a minor in transportation engineering. He is passionate about work involving railway and technologies specifically in terms of overall safety to communities and its users. This project, in general, taught him the complexities involving autonomous vehicles and its interaction with the different elements in a roadway network. He is extremely grateful to be part of this team and to be working on this project as it will help Calgary make important decisions in the future involving implementation of autonomous vehicles on the scale the project was modeled at and even Calgary-wide. URL: From engg-enci-l at mailman.ucalgary.ca Fri Jun 4 18:23:11 2021 From: engg-enci-l at mailman.ucalgary.ca (Students in Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program) Date: Sat, 5 Jun 2021 00:23:11 +0000 Subject: [ENCI-l] Civil Fall 2021 Changes - message from the Department Message-ID: Dear Civil Engineering Undergraduate Students, By now you should have received an email from the Engineering Student Centre asking you to re-register in your ENCI courses. We wanted to provide a bit more background from the Department as to why we are instigating these changes and what it will mean for you. Rationale: As we try to navigate our most difficult term ever in Fall 2021, we are faced with providing an in-person experience for our students and faculty, as well as having remote options available for those that are not able to come to campus. Our department looked at possibilities and options, and in the end determined we would go with a mixed delivery mode. Our guiding principle behind the decisions we made were to maximize student learning and reduce the burden on our faculty members. Where it will all happen: We are in the process of creating a new Civil Engineering design studio on the 3rd Floor of F block. This room will have movable tables to enable lecture style learning and also hands-on tutorial style learning with group work. All our ENCI 3rd and 4th year courses will take place in this new room. The room will be equipped with technology to enable remote learning options (e.g. AV, live stream, etc) and we will have a dedicated room coordinator to manage the technology. We will also have a person that coordinates assessments etc. across the 3rd and 4th years. The exciting part of this new space is less moving around campus and a dedicate spot for you to interact with your fellow students ? we really hope to bring back ?working together? in a positive and constructive way ? something so important to your engineering experience. The Civil design room will be available to students after classes, such that you may continue to work with your peers on course materials. We will also have ENF 325 available to all Civil Undergraduate students as an alternative space to go. Finally, we have 3 small rooms in our new ENE 323 design studio (house ~6 people) which you will be able to book for group work or perhaps meetings with your ENCI 570 advisor. What your learning will look like: Your learning will be a blend of in person activities and remote learning. If you are in 3rd year, you will be in the Civil design room for in person learning on Tuesdays & Thursday and will have in person laboratories on Wednesdays. On Mondays and Fridays, you have dedicated space in your timetable for remote learning (i.e. synchronous zoom lectures or asynchronous learning). If you are in 4th year, you will be in the Civil design room for in person learning on Mondays and Wednesdays and will have in person laboratories on Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will have dedicated space in your timetable for remote learning (i.e. synchronous zoom lectures or asynchronous learning). Each course has a block of in person time, during which you may expect things like an overview lecture, then maybe solving tutorial problems or working on assignments for hands on active learning ? with both the instructor and TAs in the room for guidance and assistance. This is what the student centre is meaning by ?team active learning?. Timetable: We have designed the timetable to account for all the minor courses, thus we do not anticipate any conflicts there. With the remote sessions, should you be ?in between? 3rd and 4th year, we anticipate this can also be accommodated as your in person learning components will be on different days. However, I am sure there will still be some course conflicts that arise. Should that be the case, please reach out to the student centre and we will figure out the best solution for you. Fully remote sections: As mentioned in the email from the Student Centre, we will be running ?fully remote? sections for each course. This option is to ensure our students that are not able to make it to Calgary, have concerns surrounding covid (for either themselves or their family), or have serious timetable conflicts have the ability to progress in their degree. If you need this option, please reach out to the student centre as registration in this section will require consent of the department. Looking forward to Winter: I am sure you are all wondering what Winter 2022 term will look like. We anticipate keeping with the active learning style for our 3rd year program. This means, expect your courses to be fully in person and in the new Civil design studio. Each week, you will have a grouping of your lecture and tutorial in which the active learning component will occur to complement the remaining lectures and laboratories in the course. The timetable shifts to accommodate this are very small (moving one tutorial and 2 lab sections) and will be communicated to everyone shortly. For our 4th year students, your current timetable will remain and expect to be fully in person as well. We will make more use of our ENE 323 design studio as we anticipate increased activity in your ENCI 570 projects. Last comments: I recognize re-registering in your classes is ?not convenient?, however please be assured that a spot will be available to you in every ENCI course. Should you experience difficulties, please connect with the student centre. I am very excited about returning to in person learning and the new timetable that really enables our faculty to integrate what you are learning in the lecture material into hands on problem solving. I am also very excited about bring our groups of students together in a way that really facilitates interaction ? both amongst the students and between the students and the instructors. If you have any questions or concerns, your first point of contact should be the Engineering Student Centre engginfo at ucalgary.ca where they can assist with all things related to timetables, course conflicts, etc. If you have more general concerns or feedback, please feel free to reach out to me directly or via your CEUS executive. I am very much looking forward to the return of all the students to campus and regaining the energy and vibrancy of the department and university. With best regards, Jocelyn Hayley Jocelyn L. Prior to your arrival, we wanted to reach out and let you know what your timetable and classes will look like. For all 3rd and 4th year students: All of your in person ENCI classes will take place in a new Civil Design studio located on the 1st floor of E block, ENE 122/128. This is a bright and airy room that will be equipped with tables and chairs in groupings of 4. This room will also have multiple screens, the technology to both zoom in and zoom out, and a dedicated technology assistant to support both faculty and students. The room is in the final stages of renovation and we can?t wait to see the finished product. If you are attending ?in person?, which is the majority of you, then your schedule will look like the excel timetable attached here. Key components of the schedule are: 1.In person days (TR & Wed labs for 3rd year; MWF for 4th year). During class time, you will have the opportunity to attend lectures and work on active learning (i.e. solve problems, etc) with the assistance of the instructor and TA team. 2. Remote delivery days (MF for 3rd year; TR for 4th year). On these days, your ENCI courses will be delivered via zoom using synchronous lectures. Please check D2L and log in according to the timetabled schedule. 3. ?grey? time blocks. These are just placeholders in the schedule, thought I?d keep them in for convenience in case you are registered in a minor. 4. non-ENCI courses. Please check your updated schedule to see mode of delivery of these courses. For fully remote 3rd and 4th year students: Some students need fully remote access to the course due to covid related reasons. For the 400 and 500 level ENCI courses, you must be registered in the ?remote only? section, which is often lecture section L02 and associated tutorials and laboratories. Please contact engginfo at ucalgary.ca if you require this option. Full remote students will have the same timetable as attached, but will attend synchronous zoom lectures in place of in person components. Please see D2L or check in with your instructor for what this looks like for each course. For 2nd year students: Please check your schedule for non-ENCI courses, your schedule should be updated early next week to reflect any changes to teaching modalities. For ENCI 317, we are happy to welcome you in person. Remote learning will be supported for this course - there is no requirement to register in a different section, please just let the instructor know at the beginning of the term. Study spaces: We recognize there will be a need to find a space to study, work, collaborate, and maybe connect to another zoom lecture. Here are some of the spaces available. The civil design studio ENE 122/128 will be available to for ENCI students when it is not in use for our classes. Feel free to use this space to study, work on group projects, etc before, between or after classes. Other spaces available for ENCI students will be ENE 323 (there will graduate level classes in this room at some times, all undergraduate and graduate students are free to use the space when there are not classes in progress). There are also 3 bookable collaboration rooms in ENE 323, feel free to book these for group projects (i.e. ENCI 570) - details on how to do a booking will be circulated at the beginning of term. ENF 305 will be the civil engineering home room, open to ALL ENCI students - this room will have a set up of tables and chairs to facilitate a casual connection space. ENF 122/126 computer labs will have some programming in them, and will be available to all ENCI and GEO students when not in use for classes. Finally, feel free to find a quiet or connected space in our engineering complex or across campus. Covid regulations: We have heard there are many questions around masks, how vaccination documentation and covid testing will work, where (and how) you will eat! Our faculty and staff have many of the same questions - We are sure we will get updates from central soon on how this will all work. Considerations: We are asking that all students, faculty and staff be empathetic to the needs and concerns of others. Faculty may have children under the age of 12, or students have siblings in this category, or live with/interact with individuals whom have higher covid risk. Everyone has a different situation and different comfort level. Thus we ask you follow all the university regulations. Also consider checking in with your teaching team, student groups, etc to determine how to best connect - options may range from zoom meetings, emails and discussion boards, to in person connections. New Undergraduate Course: Ending on an exciting note, we'd like to draw our 4th years attention to a new Civil Engineering Undergraduate course. Details of the course are attached and please feel free to reach out to Dr. Saidi should you have questions on the course and if it?s a good option for you. Concerns/contact: Should you have any questions or concerns about your schedule, the first place to seek help is the Engineering Student Centre(engginfo at ucalgary.ca). An email with advising times was sent earlier this week. For items such as pre-requisites, courses to graduation, please reach out to Dr. He, our Associate Head Undergraduate Studies (jianhe at ucalgary.ca). For course specific concerns, your first point of contact is your course instructor. For 2021/22 the 3rd year academic coordinator is Dr. Zhou (qi.zhou1 at ucalgary.ca) and 4th year academic coordinator is Dr. Saidi (ssaidi at ucalgary.ca). If you have more general concerns or feedback, I am always happy to hear from you directly (jhayley at ucalgary.ca) or you can connect with your CEUS executive (ceus at ucalgary.ca). Once again, we are looking forward to welcoming all of you back to campus for an exciting and dynamic year. Jocelyn Hayley Jocelyn L. The Troitsky Bridge Building Competition is an event hosted by the University of Concordia in Montreal, Quebec. Every year in March, Universities from across Canada compete to build the most efficient bridge design within the allowed dimensions. The competition encourages innovation by restricting the bridge to be constructed only out of popsicle sticks, white glue, and dental floss. We aren?t talking about small bridges which you can pick up with one hand, we are talking about massive bridges over a meter long, weighing 6 kilograms. Take a look at some of the brides that were entered last year by the University of Calgary team: [https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/N_KRAluQRvombSgv4ZcgMuUKoeVx3WlVdP-dnNIFPfXYkhgeXK-EPRmp87jghK6lQIwQ52MME9Zy4CG49sK9DS2hwaixonlL2SBTNmBbULm5v2exTVOmIAIRT2DEBSc9Nw-rPx_Q=s0][https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/DnZNZ3vg0CZcFoOqvmcFSnbLd5ua7798fMVDY3_0zs5vIe22eEwXGDsKffmTRtOeS32xRgFo3cZt_wmn0TDb7IaBCQLTzV4R1aVVUNaD-ty8Joi1Jq4h2665nB3gjJ1DpzUOyily=s0] [https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/dES5s-PovG95gnEFgx8p5kLB6_HuM6xVRAkf-Vn5-OgYjAlx7Pxf_DQUyG9_KfwtdafxJsKMWz4_fzdN3DU9QL0HNUDdNonCLoEXmULnDFvQP95fpx6G-oh8Gaxcyd4i5gVhOz8Y=s0] In addition to traveling to Montreal at a subsidized fee, this is a great leadership opportunity to be on the executive team and take on leadership roles while developing teamwork skills and applying classroom knowledge in a practical situation. Not only does this look great on a resume, it is a great talking point during interviews. The duties for each of these roles are as follows: * Project Manager * Sets out expectations and keeps Team on track to meet deadlines * Conduct Team meetings and presentations * Takes lead position on the SSAF reports * Motivates entire team and sets high standards * Project Coordinator * Communicates with Montreal team to coordinate deadlines and payments * Completes progress reports for the team * Communicates with faculty staff and lab coordinators to provide a workplace for participants in order to construct the bridges * Responsible for the budget of the competition * Logistics Manager * Responsible for booking flights/hotels * Manages the budget and ensures that costs can be covered * Work alongside the communication executive for sponsorship fundings * Communication Executive * Will take the lead for sponsorship packages * Prepare informative presentations about the competition and the expectations from each group member * Communicates with team members and keep them in the loop with any updates regarding the competition *Note: All Execs need to participate in the competition and must be enrolled as a student in an undergraduate engineering program at the University of Calgary If you are interested, please send an email to cbridgeuofc at gmail.com with the header including your name and rank the positions you are interested in from 1-4 (1 being most desired and 4 being the least desired). Also, include a short description of the following in your email: * Current academic year. * Prior related experiences and software knowledge. * Reason and motivation for joining the club. Applications will be closed on Sunday, September 19th at 11:59 PM If you would like to participate and are not interested in being an executive, there will be another application open later this semester, be on the lookout!
