I wanted to provide you an update on where we are at with courses and a few other things. I had a good chat with CEUS reps on Friday (via Zoom) and had an email prepared to update everyone but decided to wait a few hours! Thank you for your patience as everything evolves and we figure out a new normal. I first wanted to let you know we are working diligently to get our classes up and running again. I am having discussions at all levels, at all times of day right now (including leadership meetings on line this morning!). I also want to acknowledge this is a particularly stressful and confusing time for all of you? I imagine you have so many questions and concerns, and simply just don?t know what is going on. I hope this email helps provide a bit of information. I also want to encourage you to reach out an any time. Please feel free to contact me (jhayley at ucalgary.ca), Neil Duncan, our Associate Head Undergraduate (duncan at ucalgary.ca), Markus Dann, our Associate Head Graduate Studies (mrdann at ucalgary.ca), your CEGS or CEUS leaders, or your course instructor. There is also support available through student wellness services. Classes: As announced by the Provost on Friday, all classes are switching to alternative forms of delivery starting on Monday. What this looks like will vary from class to class. Right now, I?d say your class might look like one, some or all of these options: 1. Pre-recorded lectures (probably using Yuja) that you may view at your convenience - hosted on D2L. 2. On-line lectures hosted using Zoom during normally scheduled lecture times. Exact mechanisms may vary from class to class, however Zoom allows for interaction using the ?chat? feature and the ?raise hand? feature. Some instructors might record these Zoom lectures and post them on D2L for viewing later. 3. Annotated lecture slides coupled with announced virtual office hours and/or virtual tutorials. 4. Pre-recorded laboratory experiments and/or laboratory simulations with simulated lab data. We ask that for all forms of delivery that you respect copyrights and NOT post these videos on video sharing websites or social media Tutorials: These will be handled on a class by class bases, but we intend to maintain course content, including worked examples. The delivery method of any quizzes will change. Laboratories: In person laboratories are cancelled for the remained of the term, but may be substituted with virtual labs or data analyses. These will be announced by your course instructor in the coming days. Midterms: If If there are still midterm exams coming up in your courses, your instructor will communicate to you how the exam format will change. All midterms/quizzes/assessments set to occur on Friday, 13 March were cancelled. Your instructor will be in touch about alternative plans. Final exams: We are currently making arrangements regarding final exams and your instructors will be sharing details with you in the next week. Note that it is still likely that most courses will have final exams; however there will be no face-to-face exams. Course outlines: Instructors are working on any revisions required to course outlines. As soon as approved, these will be available to students via D2L - expect to see them posted on Friday. Campus services: Right now, the university remains open and all campus services are available. For example, you are welcome to come to campus and use the computers, the maker space, the wifi, etc. However, there will be no requirements for you to come to campus for any class component. You might need to be available virtually at lecture times (check with your instructor if you are uncertain) and you might need to be available virtually for your final exam scheduled time (we will let you know by the end of the week). This might mean that classes such as ENCI 570 capstone design change slightly in scope such that students are in no way disadvantaged if they leave the campus/city. For thesis based graduate students: The university remains open, as do your research laboratories. Please check with your supervisor and create a plan for the next couple months, as well as a contingency plan should campus services change. At the end of everyday, please ensure your laboratory is safe to walk away from, your work area is tidy with no food or debris. If you are working in a research laboratory setting, please connect with your supervisor and refresh your safety plan, including work alone plan. Reach out to your supervisor, Dr. Dann or myself with any concerns. Other questions: Other concerns I heard raised are around internship, specifically if a 3rd year?s internship get cancelled, then availability of 4th year courses. We will be certain to address this in the upcoming week(s) as soon as we are rolling with the revised course content. Also, questions about 4th years and the ability to complete your degree. It is my understanding that the course delivery and assessment methods have changed, however, the course content will remain effectively the same and that you will receive the necessary components to complete your degree requirements as planned. Last words: Finally, I thank each and every one of you for your patience as we work through this process. On Monday and Tuesday we will still be working through a steep learning curve for many of our instructors. We have set up on-line workshops and chat sites to help bring our faculty up to speed and help them create the content to deliver to you? bear with us as we work through a few of the kinks at the start! For updates about your classes, make sure you are checking D2L regularly. Enjoy the last of your weekend and feel free to reach out with any questions. And Happy Belated Pi-Day. First, it is your designated departmental course which is handled at the department level. Second, it is ENGG 501/502 which are dedicated to Energy Engineering students and to any multidisciplinary team with or without an industry sponsor. Third, it is ENGG 503/504, which are dedicated to entrepreneurial design projects. The teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For such projects, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential, and the objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start-up companies, new technologies, new services, etc. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company up or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform that students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project. The following programs: electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics, have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments will automatically get credit for taking this course in lieu of their departmental capstone course. For other departments, approval from the department must be sought in order to secure credit. Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca) will be the course coordinator for ENGG 503/504. In close partnership with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial, a unique course structure was designed last year to expose the students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. This partnership is expected to continue this upcoming year. There will be mentorship opportunities provided by those who have experience with entrepreneurship and creating new companies and technologies. Also, there will be opportunities for scholarships and grants to support the teams. Last year, there were at least 10 grants of $1000 each to support the projects, provided by the UofC?s Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking. There will likely be similar support in place for the upcoming academic year. Ideally, you should have an idea, form a team and register in the course. If you have an idea but not a team, or if you are interested in this stream, but does not have a clear idea to work on, you should also register in the course,. The course instructor will help the students to form/join teams within the first three weeks of the classes. You are encouraged to register into the courses asap (ENGG 503/504) if you are interested. For more information, please contact Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca). Further details on the application process and project screening will be announced soon. ?????????? Please find more information below. Thanks, Hello 2020 Civil engineering Grads! First of all, congratualtions on graduating. That is a huge accomplishment! I am writing to let you know about an amazing opportunity if you are interested in structural engineering. For those that don?t know me, my name is Ben Forrest and I am currently pursing my PhD in civil engineering. Some of you may have met me when I was TA for either ENCI 451 or ENCI 513. I wanted to pass on information about a great opportunity to take a prestigious, one-year master?s program in Europe. Please see information and links in the email below. The program is a thesis-based master?s program called Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC). You can check out their website for more details but the program structure is as follows: SA1: History of Construction and of Conservation SA2: Structural Analysis Techniques SA3: Seismic Behaviour and Structural Dynamics SA4: Inspection and Diagnosis SA5: Repairing and Strengthening Techniques SA6: Restoration and Conservation of Materials SA7: Integrated Project SA8: Dissertation/Thesis For me, this program was life-changing. It was a challenging program that teaches advance structural analysis topics but I also was in a class of 18 students from all over the world (Austria, Iran, England, US, Argentina, Italy, Tanzania, Malaysia, South Korea?). It is quite amazing hearing stories of engineer students from all over the world and we are still chatting and reuiniting to this day. Outside of this diverse experience, I lived abroad for the 11 month program. Seven months in Guimaraes, Portugal and the other four in Barcelona, Spain. I learned to speak Portuguese and Spanish and got to experience the exillerating and diverse cultures in each city. For instance, after a week of arriving in Portugal, I was invited to a wine farm to help with the grape harvest. Me and 30 other students harvested the grapes, crushed them with our feet and ate a feast I remember like yesterday, filled with music and fun. Me and three other friends from the program rented a car and took a roadtrip to Lisbon where we surfed in Penice and tasted the world famous cream pastrie, pasteis to nata. The adventures didn?t stop there, once in Europe, it costs as little as 20 Euro to fly to the major city centers, so on the long weekends I traveled to world destinations such as Paris, Madrid and Prague. The program was especially life-changing to me as I met my wife in Portgual since she was on an exchange program there at the same time. I want to point out that this is also an opportunity to achieve a master?s program in one year where it normally takes two. Basically, they take two-years of content and crush it into 11 months. This leads to challenging times completing all the content but nothing you all are not already used to having just graduated from civil engineering! I can attest to the value of the program as it was sufficient for my PhD application. Obviously the experiences differ for everyone, this was a quick blurb about mine but I can tell you that everyone in my class from SAHC had a memorable experience and no one regrets attending. If you have aspirations in structural engineering, believe me this is the program for you. I already know two U of C civ eng alumni students who took the program and I?m excited to hear about their experience. If you are interested, you need to move fast. They are on the last call for the program beginning in September. You will need time to complete the application. If you would like to know more about the program based on my experience, feel free to reach out to me. Best of luck in your future enndeavours and congratulations on graduating! The unofficial course outline is attached for your information. As a final year BSc student in Civil, you can request to take this course as a Group B technical elective course. In this course, we will survey a wide range of computational methods in science and engineering, from fundamental topics that you may have seen in your undergrad numerical method class (e.g., ENGG 407) but never saw applied, to powerful concepts and tools in linear algebra that are useful for data analytics and machine learning. The instruction will be conducted using a flipped-classroom approach, and the focus is on the application of those methods using existing software packages (e.g., MATLAB), rather than lengthy derivations and writing code from scratch. The course will be suitable for MEng, MSc, and upper-level BSc students who wish to 1) understand better how numerical models work and 2) gain confidence in dealing with data. If you are interested in these topics, please do not be intimidated by the fact that the course is also listed at the 600 level, because I will make sure everyone in the course will have the preparation they need to succeed in the course. The Department of Civil Engineering faculty and staff are thrilled to be resuming classes for the fall term, including a mixture of online and some in-person instruction.? Many students are asking if our homerooms will be open for studying and gathering in this fall. Due to COVID-19, we have had to make a number of changes to reflect new health protocols. Out of an abundance of caution, all homerooms will remain closed within the Schulich School of Engineering. There will still be some study spaces within our buildings, including in our engineering student lounge and open areas in our G-block. ? In the shift to remote learning, our school remains focused on supporting your student experience. The Engineering Student Centre and Engineering Career Centre will continue to provide advising through our virtual advising . Faculty and staff are also working to identify resources to further support your learning, including remote access to software for your classes and ways to continue makerspace operations safely. As soon as details are confirmed they will be shared. As you prepare to return to campus or begin remote learning, there is an excellent guide for UCalgary students with up to date details on navigating common spaces, our cleaning and disinfecting efforts, and tips on how to stay informed. Please take a few moments to read the COVID-19 safety guide for students on campus . This isn?t a typical start to the new year. Safety and providing a high-quality education remain top priorities. Thank you for all that you are doing as a student to protect your own health and the health of our campus community. ? The Troitsky Bridge Building Competition is an event hosted by the University of Concordia in Montreal, Quebec. Every year in March, Universities from across Canada compete to build the most efficient bridge design within the allowed dimensions. The competition encourages innovation by restricting the bridge to be constructed only out of popsicle sticks, white glue, and dental floss. We aren't talking about small bridges which you can pick up with one hand, we are talking about massive bridges over a meter long, weighing 6 kilograms. Take a look at some of the brides that were entered last year by the University of Calgary team: [cid:image004.jpg at 01D6876F.89F19980] [cid:image005.jpg at 01D6876F.89F19980] [cid:image006.jpg at 01D6876F.89F19980] In addition to traveling to Montreal at a subsidized fee, this is a great leadership opportunity to be on the executive team and take on leadership roles while developing teamwork skills and applying classroom knowledge in a practical situation. Not only does this look great on a resume, it is a great talking point during interviews. The duties for each of these roles are as follows: * Project Manager * Communication Executive * Logistics Manager *Note: All Execs need to participate in the competition and must be enrolled as a student in an undergraduate engineering program at the University of Calgary If you are interested, please send an email to cbridgeuofc at gmail.com with the header including your name and rank the positions you are interested in from 1-3 (1 being most desired and 3 being the least desired). Also include a short description of the following in your email: * Current academic year * Prior experiences * Reason for joining the club Applications will be closed on Friday, September 18th at 11:00 PM If you would like to participate, and are not interested in being an executive, there will be another application open later this semester, be on the lookout! Message-ID: Good Evening Civil Engineering Students! The UofCalgary?s Troitsky Bridge Building Club will be hosting two Information Sessions through Zoom to recruit students. The first is on Monday, October 5th at 6:30 PM, and the second is on Wednesday, October 7th at 6:30 PM. The Troitsky Bridge Building Competition is an event hosted by the University of Concordia in Montreal, Quebec and every year in March, Universities from across Canada compete to build the most efficient bridge design within the allowed dimensions. The competition encourages innovation by restricting the bridge to be constructed only out of popsicle sticks, white glue, and dental floss. The bridges designed by students have been over a metre long, weighing 6 kilograms, and were made modular in design. Take a look at some of the brides that were entered last year by the University of Calgary team: [https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8QkWwNWLxmVxgFqLkVy_5xPf6bgIM6qC8AajoGt6mjxSvBLyXHRzqCtO_HWwV3pat9vF3TIQb9NJHywIIDn-pNAXjO2SvWlDPWngsCTvCMGg1nkUZ405Yv1GzVAAX-LQrmz0Lfc] [https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/2tDS_qHAroxIddNmUMCYeoUIt6tws1pBgerZ9XvP21VvUj5FByQCYCCqtO7swPb0jZcSBOt8v88fZSb3syjwxv-1oMP5YFhElSElVBpQ_U3iOfxQxVpSirsIo1lekt7UM11lSUAK] [https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/A0oTxeW9rxjOV_H8xKaCtFj3mX11tQa1LNvLLBFZfoih5306LJI6E8K_5qYOVFcmo8K3h77zhhVBxc2Q3Uscz7eDvY3We43e9uVTW510IpJizcWWDmnilb2NahR41Y1LVcUrxfgp] In addition to traveling to Montreal at a subsidized fee, this is a great opportunity to develop design skills, get hands on experience with construction tools, build teamwork skills and apply classroom knowledge in a practical situation. Not only does this look great on a resume, it is a great talking point during interviews. Here is a message from Lorne, head LEED trainer at LeadingGreen: I hope you are enjoying the fall weather. Normally in November I return to Calgary to teach sustainable LEED workshops, however this semester I will be hosting identical workshops completely online. The exam can now be taken online too! The LEED Professional Designation has helped past participants attain internships, jobs and advanced their careers in multiple fields and now is a great time to add this credential. Students can also use the discount code ?green? for $50 off the course price! LEED is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. Buildings can become LEED Certified as can people! The best way to break into the sustainability space is to attain the LEED Green Associate. It also shows employers and clients you have certified knowledge in the field. Since the LEED GA exam doesn?t have a stellar pass rate, the value of the extra letters behind your name will carry even more weight. My workshops have helped nearly 10K students and professionals learn the material cold (important for interview prep) AND clear the exam with a very high passing rate. This semester we are hosting everything online to fit your schedule! Congratulations - you're almost done! As a starting point, please review all important dates and deadlines from the Convocation checklist (found here https://www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/graduation) and follow the appropriate steps to apply to graduate. Although application access is now live in your Student Centre, at this time some deadline information regarding Winter Conferral (Fall 2020 Applicants - 01/15/2021 Tentative Deadline) & June Convocation (Winter 2021 Applicants - 03/31/2021 Tentative Deadline) is still pending, continue to monitor the following website for up to date changes: https://www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/graduation/when-apply The Convocation office is an centralized unit within the Office of the Registrar and independent of the Engineering Student Centre. Any specific ceremony, parchment, or photography questions not covered by their informative website needs to be directed to them by connecting with either Enrolment Services or via email to convinfo at ucalgary.ca If you have questions regarding the Iron Ring ceremony or APEGA workshops the following website - https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/current-students/undergraduate/graduating-students/iron-ring-ceremony - is maintained by the ESC to answer a majority of these inquiries, if you have a question which is not covered here, you will need to contact APEGA events at apega.ca and/or Camp 18 https://camp18ironring.ca/contact for further detail. Before you connect with a Faculty advisor regarding a graduation eligibility check: Please first review your Academic Requirements (AR) Report. This can be located by navigating through your Student Centre>Program and Advising Info>My Academics (bottom of the page)>Academic Requirements. Some reminders: * The AR Report is a tool for students to ensure they are on track for degree completion. It may be referenced during the graduation review, but your department will look at all courses you have completed. If a substitution has been approved, but the requirement is still showing as "not met" on your AR Report, you will still be approved for graduation. It is always best to keep all email approvals from undergraduate Associate Heads/Program Directors for your own records, as well as providing these to the ESC if they have not been previously forwarded. * If your AR report looks OK, or if there are a few requirements showing as not having been met, but you have confirmation of substitutions or credits having been approved by your department or the ESC, you do not need to check into this further. * If you wish to have your AR report updated with any approved substitutions or equivalent courses, please email engginfo at ucalgary.ca. These requests can take a few weeks to complete and are not required to graduate. If you see another issue, please email engginfo at ucalgary.ca, or join a virtual walk in appointment Mon, Tues, Thurs or Fri from 1-4 pm MST. Please sign up using QLess app https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/current-students/undergraduate/qless and watch for a Zoom meeting request sent via email to the address entered on the queuing system. Please note: the first few weeks of January are very busy with Winter term enrolment requests. If needed, we ask that you plan for a virtual drop-in advising session about grad review in November or December if you feel the issue may have an impact on your Winter term enrolment, if this inquiry is not of immediate concern you can choose to meet with us in February. At this time full courses required for degree continuation are still being reviewed and solutions may not be communicated until after the Winter break in the first week in January at the latest. We have been assured you will get the core technical courses required to graduate (if applicable). If you require an International Student Visa letter (to support post-graduate work within Canada), please note there is now a fillable form available on the ESC D2L>Content>Forms>Post Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) Graduation Letter Form. Again, due to the volume of inquiries related to Winter term registration in the first three weeks of January, we ask that, if possible, you complete the form and return it to engginfo at ucalgary.ca in November, December, or February. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions or concerns. All the best, Engineering Student Centre Schulich School of Engineering, Engineering Student Centre, ENC 205 University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive NW Calgary, AB T2N 1N4 http://schulich.ucalgary.ca/ Do you have a question for the Engineering Student Centre? * Check the Engineering Student Centre D2L - many questions can be answered! * Virtual Walk-Ins will be held 1pm - 4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday. Current engineering students can find instructions on the Engineering Student Centre D2L page for how to access QLess & Zoom. Or check the following webpage, https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/current-students/undergraduate/student-resources/qless * Email support will be continued through engginfo at ucalgary.ca for any general questions, approvals, graduation checks, time conflict and straight forward questions. Please do not email multiple times and be patient given the current volume. Provide your full name (first & last) and your UCID number in all communications. * Appointments are currently not available - please see the virtual walk-in information listed above. Thank you so much for your interest in fundraising for Movember! For 2020, CESS is continuing with its yearly Movember fundraising tradition, with the help of all your department engineering societies and ESS! This year is a little bit different. Instead of creating separate team pages for each department, CESS created one page for all Schulich engineers. Why, you may ask? About a year ago, our beloved Schulich mascot, Supercow, was stolen by engineering students from the University of Regina. To get Supercow back, both U of C and U of R engineering students have opened up a head-to-head fundraiser where the university with the most donations raised gets possession of both our beloved Supercow and the U of R version of Supercow. All proceeds will be donated to the Movember charity! Stay tuned for more updates!
