After months of hard work, the November 2019 Singapore Trip you voted for is ready to be presented to you all! Therefore, we are happy to invite all civil engineering undergraduate students to ANOTHER International Trip info session on Monday, June 3rd at 5:30pm. Location is TBD, but will be somewhere in Engg. We'll send out the location as soon as we know it. For those who are not familiar with the Civil International Trip, please see the summary at the bottom of this email. Attendance at the June 3rd info session is MANDATORY in order to apply for the trip. The info session will cover the trip overview, pricing, secured funding sources, rough itinerary, expectations, and application process! Please save the date if you are interested in this fantastic opportunity. Brief summary of the trip: Every year, CEUS takes a group of civil students in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel abroad in our International Trip program. We believe that some lessons can only be learned through experience and that travelling broadens the mind. This year, we have planned to visit the city-state of Singapore, or a field trip with a focus on environmental sustainability. Our departure and return dates will most likely be November 8th to 15th, 2019 (Fall Reading Week). Thanks for being patient with us. Ultimately, we want this trip to be the most valuable experience possible, educationally and otherwise, and we needed to spend the proper time collaborating with the department and other resources. To our new 2nd year undergraduate students, our new M.Eng. and thesis based M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, welcome to our Department. Some of you will have travelled far to arrive in our city (the 5th most livable city in the world and top in North America!) and some of you have joined us from 1st year choosing to make Civil Engineering your home. To all of our returning students, our 3rd and 4th years, coming back from internship or continuing in your program, our M.Eng. students returning for another semester or year of studies, and our M.Sc. and Ph.D. students who have been with us all summer, welcome back. Our faculty and staff welcome new members and our group of exceptional postdoctoral fellows also welcomes new scholars. As the weather turns a bit cooler, September sees a renewed energy around campus. We hope you will use this time to say hi to old friends, make new friends, or just stop and help a first year find their class. In the Department of Civil Engineering, we improve the built environment in which we live - we improve quality of life. We continue to focus on designing, building, maintaining and conserving sustainable and resilient infrastructure - where infrastructure covers everything from our water systems to our buildings and roads; we draw on technology and digital tools; we seek to understand our environment, how we interact with it, and always striving to be its guardians for those who follow us. This upcoming year we will see a renewed focus on high impact research, enriching our graduate student experiences, and evolving and updating our undergraduate curriculum. If you would like to get involved, I encourage you to reach out to any number of groups including our Civil Engineering Undergraduate Society (ceus at ucalgary.ca), or Civil Engineering Graduate Society (cegs at ucalgary.ca), or chat to a classmate, colleague or professor on how you can be involved. Like pissed of mad? When you went into Engineering, did you think you were eventually gonna build something? But look at you, you?re watching some guy on YouTube teach MatLab in a foreign language. For the ones who always smell like WD-40, here is your chance to finally show your craftsman skills. The UofC?s Troitsky Bridge Building Team is looking for two Executives to fill there Treasure and Communication role. The Troitsky Bridge Building Competition is an event hosted by the University of Concordia in Montreal, Quebec. Every year in March, Universities from across Canada compete to build the most efficient bridge design within the allowed dimensions. The competition encourages innovation by restricting the bridge to be constructed only out of popsicle sticks, white glue, and dental floss. If you would like to participate, and are not interested in being an executive, there will be another application open later this semester, be on the look out! The duties for each of these roles are as follows: Treasurer: In charge of the application of funding. This would include SSAF, Corporate Sponsorships, and any other opportunities for sourcing funds. The executive would also be responsible for managing the organizations funding. Communication Executive: Responsible for any advertisements, internal and external communications. *Note: All Execs need to participate in the competition. Not because it is regulation, but because that would just be sad you know. If you are interested, please send an email to cbridgeuofc at gmail.com with the header including your name and the position you are interested in. Applications will be closed on Friday, September 20th at 10:00 PM. In your email, please include the following: 1.Current academic year 2.Prior experiences 3.Reason for joining the club 4.Your current commitments and how you plan on balancing your workload Any questions can also be directed to cbridgeuofc at gmail.com or through our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ucalgarytbbc/. Each year, OSA (Optical Society of America) chooses 10 emerging leaders in the optics and photonics community as the OSA Ambassadors to share their expertise and experiences/perspectives with students and early career professionals. Speaker biography: Dr. Eric J. Zhang is currently a Research Staff Member at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where his research focuses on the systems-level implementation of optical spectroscopy on an integrated silicon-photonic platform. Prior to joining IBM, Eric completed his Ph.D. in the Princeton University Laser Sensing Laboratory, where he specialized in optical spectroscopy for trace-gas detection, particularly Faraday rotation spectroscopy for nitric oxide isotopic ratiometry. He received his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto, while working in the Micro/Nanophotonics Laboratory developing passive photonic devices for optical sensing. Please see the attached poster for the abstract. As a 2019 OSA Ambassador, Dr. Zhang is also committed to sharing experiences and providing career advice to students and young professionals at the event. Admission is free of charge but registration is required. Topic: Photonic integrated circuits for trace-gas sensing Time & Date: 1 - 2 PM, Friday, November 29, 2019 Location: ENG 224 Pizzas and pops will be served! Please register here Hope to see you there! Thanks, COPSS Executive Team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
