Relevant to senior students eligible for the capstone design course.
Dear Students,
This is to inform you that this upcoming academic year, F18/W19, you will have three choices when it comes to the capstone design project courses.
First, it is your designated departmental course which is handled at the department level.
Second, it is ENGG 501/502<http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/engineering.html#39789> which are dedicated to Energy Engineering students and to any multidisciplinary team with or without an industry sponsor. Dr. Budiman will be the course instructor for ENGG 501/502 courses.
Third, it is ENGG 503/504<http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/engineering.html#43071>, which has just opened for registration. These courses are dedicated to entrepreneurial design projects. The teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For such projects, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential and the objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start up companies, new technologies etc. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform that students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project.
The following programs: electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics, have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments will get credit for taking this course in lieu of their departmental capstone course.
Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca<mailto:h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca>) will be the course coordinator for ENGG 503/504.
Dr. Zareipour is working closely with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking and Innovate Calgary to put together a unique course structure to expose students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. There will be mentorship opportunities provided by those who have experience with entrepreneurship and creating new companies and technologies.
Also, there will be opportunities for scholarships and grants to support the teams. In this context, there will at least 10 grants of $1000 each to support the projects, provided by the UofC's Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking. There could be more grants and scholarships, to be announced.
You are encouraged to register into the courses asap (ENGG 503/504) if you are interested.
For more information, please contact Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca<mailto:h.zareipour at ucalgary.ca>). Further details on the application process and project screening will be announced soon.
