STUDENT POSITION
LEARNING ASSISTANT
The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for student employees to serve as part-time Learning Assistants for the Engineering Academic Success Centre in the Spring and Summer 2018 term. The Engineering Academic Success Centre (formerly known as DARC) is a space where Schulich students can congregate to study, interact, and get access to academic support resources. The Centre includes space for independent and small group study, a seminar room for seminars and workshops, and four tutorial rooms for one-on-one and small group tutorial assistance. The Engineering Academic Development Specialist works out of the Engineering Academic Success Centre, and advises on academic skills and challenges.
The Learning Assistants will provide tutoring assistance and support for engineering courses in our Energy Engineering Program, as follows:
Spring 2018
Summer 2018
ENER 240 (Mechanics / Calculus)
MATH 209 (Applied and Computational Linear Algebra for Energy Engineers)
ENER 260 (Statics / Algebra)
ENGG 201 (Liquids, Gasses, and Solids)
ENER 340 (Dynamics / Differential Equations)

Description:
Learning Assistants are student leaders who provide motivation for learning and act as a role model to their fellow peers. Learning Assistants work with students one-on-one, or as a group, to answer questions on course content, offer practice problems and provide study strategies. Students will seek assistance on a drop-in basis.
Qualifications:
Learning Assistants are selected on the basis of academic skill, leadership, character, and the ability to communicate well with others. They are expected to have extensive knowledge about the subject and be able to communicate that knowledge to other students and peers.
All individuals in the Learning Assistant position must:
1. Be in good standing with the University of Calgary and the Schulich School of Engineering;
2. Possess a mastery of the subject being tutored, having obtained an overall GPA of 3.00 and earned a B or higher in the specific course(s) they choose to tutor or in the approved alternatives as identified below (transcripts will be reviewed); and
3. Be a senior-level undergraduate student (3rd or 4th year) or graduate student in engineering (or related area of study such as Physics, Chemistry or Math).

Willingness and ability to support one of the following courses would be considered an asset: ENGG 202, ENGG 225, ENGG 233, ENGG 349, MATH 211, MATH 375.
Completion of the My First Six Weeks or Skills for Success programs (offered through the Student Success Centre) would be an asset, as would completion of one or more Student Success Seminars.
Skills:
Applicants should exhibit the following skill-set:
* Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality;
* Ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with staff, faculty and students;
* Ability to work well with peers and faculty;
* Ability to maintain confidentiality;
* Ability to be empathetic to students having difficulties;
* Mastery of subject being tutored;
* Good overall academic ability; and
* Exemplary communication skills.
Requirements:
Depending on the level of expertise and availability, applicants may assist in multiple courses. Learning Assistants must attend a training session and commit to a minimum of two shifts during the school term, and a minimum of two shifts during the final exams periods. Tutoring shifts for part-time positions will typically be 3 hours in length, with longer shifts possible. Tutoring shifts may include evenings and / or weekends. When not tutoring students, Learning Assistants will work on projects as assigned by the Engineering Academic Development Specialist.
The Engineering Academic Development Specialist coordinates and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Learning Assistant Team, under the supervision of the Manager, Engineering Student Centre, and under portfolio of the Associate Dean (Student Affairs and International).
Responsibilities:
Learning Assistants (LAs) are expected to assume duties and responsibilities listed below. LAs may be expected to perform other duties as required in their respective subject areas.
* Meet with students one-on-one or in groups to answer questions on course content, offer practice problems, and provide study strategies.
* Demonstrate academic integrity, especially when answering questions about assignments or other graded work.
* Assist with projects when not tutoring students.
* Provide availability to the Engineering Academic Development Specialist for scheduled shifts.
* Be punctual for scheduled shifts. It is your responsibility to notify the Engineering Academic Development Specialist if you cannot make your scheduled shift due to an emergency or extenuating circumstance.
* Oversee and assist with Engineering Academic Success Centre operations.
* Complete bi-weekly timesheets online through Business Administration System in a timely manner, for appropriate payment.
* Report any problems or concerns to the Engineering Academic Development Specialist immediately.
* Serve as a role model for students seeking academic assistance.
* Follow the University of Calgary policies and procedures and behave in accordance with the School’s values and expectations.
