Dear Students, This is to inform you that this upcoming academic year, F18/W19, you will have three choices when it comes to the capstone design project courses. First, it is your designated departmental course which is handled at the department level. Second, it is ENGG 501/502 which are dedicated to Energy Engineering students and to any multidisciplinary team with or without an industry sponsor. Dr. Budiman will be the course instructor for ENGG 501/502 courses. Third, it is ENGG 503/504, which has just opened for registration. These courses are dedicated to entrepreneurial design projects. The teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For such projects, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential and the objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start up companies, new technologies etc. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform that students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project. The following programs: electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics, have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments will get credit for taking this course in lieu of their departmental capstone course. Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour@ucalgary.ca) will be the course coordinator for ENGG 503/504. Dr. Zareipour is working closely with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking and Innovate Calgary to put together a unique course structure to expose students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. There will be mentorship opportunities provided by those who have experience with entrepreneurship and creating new companies and technologies. Also, there will be opportunities for scholarships and grants to support the teams. In this context, there will at least 10 grants of $1000 each to support the projects, provided by the UofC's Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking. There could be more grants and scholarships, to be announced. You are encouraged to register into the courses asap (ENGG 503/504) if you are interested. For more information, please contact Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour@ucalgary.ca). Further details on the application process and project screening will be announced soon. The new course, ENGG 503/504, is available to civil engineering students and those who opt this one, in lieu of the departmental capstone course, will get the same course credits. These courses are dedicated to entrepreneurial design projects. The teams could be multidisciplinary or single disciplinary. For projects in these courses, there is no industry sponsor. Rather, one or more member of the team has a design idea with some business potential. The objective is to test the idea towards creating new products, start up companies, new technologies, new services, etc. The course will act as a vehicle to create a prototype and go thought the process of due diligence and decide at the end of the term if the idea is viable to go to market. If you always thought you wanted to take that idea of yours to the next level, this is the chance to test it within the context of this course. Note that this does not mean you have to start a company or take a product to the shelves at the end of the course. Rather, this course is a platform through which students with some ideas and a lot of passion for entrepreneurship can sharpen their entrepreneurial skills in addition to doing a technical project. Electrical, software, mechanical, civil and geomatics have opted to participate in this course. This means that students in these departments can get together and form a multidisciplinary team. Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour@ucalgary.ca) will be the course coordinator for ENGG 503/504. Dr. Zareipour has partnered with the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking to deliver an exciting course structure to expose students in the course to fundamentals of entrepreneurship and connect them to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Calgary. For more information, please contact Dr. Hamid Zareipour (h.zareipour@ucalgary.ca). There are only 18 spots available for this trip so make sure to reserve your spot early by e-transferring civilsnowshoe2018@gmail.com or paying a CEUS Member. The trip is $55 or $45 if you have an alpine club of Canada membership (please provide your account number) and available to CEUS Members first. Our info session night will be on Wednesday, November 28th, in ENF 325. We will be leaving Calgary on December 1st around 9 am, driving to Lake O'hara, then snowshoeing 3 hours to a cabin. Dinner and Breakfast will be provided, so you basically only really need a sleeping bag. There are a few other things you'll need, so see below for the details: - Timing: we will be leaving Calgary on Dec. 1 about 9:00am, which will put us on the trails by 11am, and at the Cabin for roughly 3pm. On Dec. 2 we will leave the cabin whenever we manage to wake ourselves and get back to calgary roughly 4-5 hours later -Sleeping Bag: it'll probably be cold after the fire goes out so bring a warm one. You'll need a pillow too if you don't want to use your clothes (don't bring a huge pillow, just a little one) - Food: Dinner (Pesto Pasta) and Breakfast (Pancakes) will be provided, so all you need is lunch on the way to the cabin and lunch on the way back (along with any snacks you may want) - Snowshoes: You're not going to want to do this in your runners, there will likely be a fair bit of snow. Wear hiking or snow boots and rent snowshoes from the outdoor centre using your $25 credit - Transport: Carpooling will be arranged at the information session - Toilet Paper: Bring your own - Warm Clothes: Its gonna be cold outside. Also going to need athletic clothes for the hike in. - Slippers or flipflops for in the hut. - Some sort of flashlight - General Camping stuff (such as your toiletries, hand sanitizer, first aid kit if you have one otherwise i do) - Cardgames or other entertainment items if you would like Firewood, Propane, and water (ice melt) is all provided at the hut so no need to worry about that.
