Dear 4th year Civil Students,
Unfortunately, ENCI 502 - Civil Engineering Aspects of Sustainable Communities will be canceled for Winter 2017 due to resource issues, and you will need to select a different technical elective (TE).
Three new courses can be used instead as a Group B TE:
ENCI 595.80 Asphalt Pavement Design and Management
Planning, designing, constructing and maintaining asphalt pavement: physical parameters, economic considerations and governing specifications; optimum design based on: design loads, subgrade soil mechanics and aggregates; asphalt mix selection and preparation; construction methods; pavement failure mechanisms; prediction of long-term performance based on field and laboratory tests; performance criteria and the implementation of rehabilitation and recycling programs.
ENCI 595.XX Structural Masonry Design - (to be timetabled still)
Component materials and their properties, masonry properties, quality control, plain and reinforced masonry, beams, walls, slender walls, columns, load-moment interaction curves, concentrated load bearing, shear load distribution, shear walls, code provisions, building envelope, detailing, differential movement, geometric walls, prestressed masonry, arches.
ENGG 519.01 Engineering Entrepreneurship
A dynamic, engaging, and highly experiential look at innovation and entrepreneurship that's designed to help you tap your passions and become a better engineering leader. You'll learn go through the entrepreneurial design process with projects such as the Venture Design Studio and Napkin to Revenues. You'll master a handful of leading edge tools as a free "textbook". And you'll apply what you learn in real-world contexts intended to help you in your career.
You can learn more about the course, professor, "textbook", and what past students have said here: goo.gl/vnU8op
Last year's calendar description:
Introduction to the concepts and practices of technology driving entrepreneurship; idea generation and feasibility analysis; basics of business planning and execution; intellectual property; product development; case students from successful and unsuccessful technology driving entrepreneurship projects.
As well, these other Group B TE courses are available in Winter 2017:
ENCI 504 - Uncertainty Concepts in Civil Engineering
ENCI 508 - Environmental Aspects of Energy
ENCI 557 - Structural Steel Design
ENCI 571 - Introduction to Road Safety
ENCI 502 was a required course for students in the Transportation Minor. In place of this, we will allow you to use ENCI 504 or the graduate course ENCI 657 - Airport Planning & Engineering toward satisfying the minor requirements.
If you have any questions and about these changes, courses or scheduling issues, please contact me duncan at ucalgary.ca<mailto:duncan at ucalgary.ca> or come see me - F210.
