Attention students heading into 2nd year

Good afternoon, engineers!

We are pleased to inform you all that program placements and minor placements for first-year students moving to second-year have been completed, and all eligible students have been placed.

(Note: upper year students' program switches have not yet been finalized.)

Find your program in your Student Centre - click on the Status link in the row with the green checkmark at the bottom of the page under the Admissions section.

IMPORTANT notes about course registration - MUST READ:

Registration into all required technical courses has been completed - excluding any courses for which you have a choice between several courses - see (4) below. Note to ENME students: please ensure you are also registered in ENME 101, the Fall Block Week course. During the registration process, some students were not registered into this course.

If you do not see ANY courses in your schedule for Fall and Winter, it is likely that you have a hold on your account. Please check in your Student Centre, top right, under the Holds section - and then follow up with Enrolment Services (403-210-7625 or visit MLB 117) to take care of the hold. Once the hold has been removed from your record, please contact the Engineering Student Centre for course registration.

If you do not have a hold on your record, but still haven't been registered into any courses, please contact an advisor in the Engineering Student Centre for more information (403-220-5732, engginfo at ucalgary.ca, or Science B 149).

Please find the curriculum requirements for each program listed here: http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/en-4.html - select the program into which you were placed.

Degree Navigator is still in the process of being updated for the current year requirements (Fall 2016), but as a general rule as you progress through the program: please refer to the Calendar (link above) as your primary resource for curriculum and course requirements. In the event of a discrepancy between your Degree Navigator (once updated) and the Calendar, please check with an advisor for clarification.

If you were deficient in any prerequisite courses (where deficient means having achieved a D/D+/F/W, or never attempted), the subsequent course(s) requiring the prerequisite(s) may or may not have been added to your schedule. It is your responsibility to drop any courses for which you do not have the correct prerequisite.

You MUST review your schedule, and it is your responsibility to do the following:

(1) register yourself for the first year course(s) in which you are deficient;

(2) drop yourself from any classes for which you do not have the prerequisite;

(3) drop yourself from any classes already successfully completed with a C- or better (or - if in process during Spring or Summer: drop if/when you receive your passing grade).

In many (but not all) cases during our registration process over the past week, some of you were registered into courses in Fall and/or Winter, even if you had already successfully completed (C- or better) the course or its equivalent, or are registered in the Spring/Summer section. It is your responsibility to drop the subsequent/duplicate course by the drop deadline in the term it’s offered, if you don’t need it (i.e. received a passing grade in the same course or equivalent in a previous session).

(4) register yourself into any courses for which you have a choice. For example, ENCH students in the regular program have a Science Option*; also, ENME, ENCI and ENSF students can select PHYS 365** or PHYS 369**.

*There is a known conflict between PHYS 369 (or '365) L01, and ENGG 349 T02 for ENCH students. We are working on opening up more GLGY 377 seats, and will send an email to ENCH students with more information on this as soon as we can. Please watch your email for more information.

**ENGO students must take PHYS 369, ENEL students must take PHYS 365; all other programs have a choice between the two courses - please refer to the Calendar link above for details for your particular program. Neither course is harder than the other - they are just slightly different from each other. Please check the Calendar for the description, as well as the available labs - to make a choice that works for you and your schedule - http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/physics.html

At the time of sending this email, all PHYS 365 lab sections are full. It is unlikely that any other sections will be opened later on, so if you are in ENSF, ENME, or ENCI (or ENCH regular program and have credit for ENGG 349) and have not yet registered into a PHYS 369/365 - you will have to choose PHYS 369.

5) Ensure your registration is complete with all required courses. Please refer to the Calendar as needed - http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/en-4.html.

Some sections of courses are reserved for students in certain programs:
ENGG 349 Fall-
L01/T01 - for ENME students only
L02T02 - for ENCH students only. There is a known conflict between: Science Option for ENCH students PHYS 369 or PHYS 365 (lectures are at the same time) with ENGG 349 T02. This was unavoidable. GLGY 377 will work better for your schedules and more seats have been opened for ENCH students.
L03/T03 - for ENCI, ENGO, ENSF students only.

ENGG 311 Fall – ENCH students only.

ENGG 317 Winter-
L01/T01 - ENME
L02/T02 - ENCH
L03/T03 - ENCI

ENME 341 Winter -
L01/T01 and L03/T03 - ENME only
L02/T02 - ENCI only
These sections of ENME 341 are tailored specifically to ENME and ENCI, respectively, and the exams will differ slightly between ENCI vs. ENME sections. An ENME student will not be permitted into L02, nor will an ENCI student be permitted into L01 or L03.

ENGG 407 - Winter -
L01, ENME
L02, ENCI and ENGO
Note: there is no Fall offering of ENGG 407 this year.

Courses specific to certain programs (e.g. ENME 337 for ENME, ENCH 315 for ENCH, etc.) are not permitted to be taken by students in programs other than those programs - even if you have the prerequisite(s) and/or even if it fits into your schedule and there is space.

Questions - who to contact:

Concerns about your placement (for example if you want to switch programs), please email: Kari Coleman, kcoleman at ucalgary.ca
