STUDENT POSITION
LAB LEARNING ASSISTANT

The Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for student employees to serve as Lab Learning Assistants for several 300 and 400 level engineering courses in Winter 2015.  The Lab Learning Assistants will provide assistance and support to students during the laboratory portion of the respective course.  The courses where Lab Learning Assistants will be considered are as follows:

Winter 2015

ENEL 343 - Circuits II
ENEL 453 - Digital Systems Design
ENEL 476 - Electromagnetic Waves & Applications
ENCH 429 - Process Dynamics and Control
ENGO 343 - Fundamentals of Surveying
ENGO 351 - Introduction to Geospatial Info Systems
ENGO 361 - Least Squares Estimation
ENGG 317 - Mechanics of Solids

Description:
Lab Learning Assistants are student leaders who provide motivation for learning and act as a role model to their fellow peers.  Lab Learning Assistants work with students one-on-one, or as a group, to answer questions in lab or project related components of a course.  The Lab Learning Assistants will attend all sections of a course's lab and will support students during the lab and to expand the teaching team.

Qualifications:
Lab Learning Assistants are selected on the basis of academic skill, leadership, character, and the ability to communicate well with others.  They are expected to have extensive knowledge about the subject and be able to communicate that knowledge to other students and peers.
All individuals in the Lab Learning Assistant position must:

1)      Be in good standing with the University of Calgary and the Schulich School of Engineering;

2)      Be an undergraduate student in the Schulich School of Engineering;

3)      Have taken the course(s) they choose to assist in at the University of Calgary; and

4)      Possess a mastery of the subject chosen, having obtained an overall GPA of 3.00 and earned a B or higher in the specific course(s) they choose to tutor (transcripts will be reviewed).


Skills:
Applicants should exhibit the following skill-set:

*         Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality;

*         Ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with staff, faculty and students;

*         Ability to work well with peers and faculty;

*         Ability to maintain confidentiality;

*         Ability to be empathetic to students having difficulties;

*         Mastery of subject being tutored;

*         Good overall academic ability; and

*         Exemplary communication skills.

Requirements:
Lab Learning Assistants must be willing to attend all lab sections of the course(s) they are assisting in.
This position reports directly to the Course Coordinators of the respective course.

Responsibilities:
Lab Learning Assistants are expected to assume duties and responsibilities listed below.  They may be expected to perform other duties as required in their respective subject areas.

*         Be punctual for each lab section they are assigned, and remain until the end of the lab session.

*         Report any problems or concerns to the Course Coordinator immediately.

*         Serve as a role model for students seeking academic assistance.

*         Follow the University of Calgary policies and procedures and behave in accordance with the School's values and expectations.
