Please note: Students will initially be able to purchase a total of 4 tickets. If more are required, please inform ESS at time of purchase. Tickets on hold will be released on Friday March 7th, 2014.

Tables will seat 12 people. Please inform ESS which students you would like to sit with at your table. If a preference is not mentioned, you will be seated with your department.

4. Submit your nominations for ESS Student Awards and Professor of the Year Awards

Do you know a student or a professor who is deserving of an award? If so, submit a nomination! ESS will post more information of this soon so keep your eyes on our website and blackboard. In the mean time, start thinking about people you would like to nominate. The awards are not limited to those involved with the Engineering Students’ Society (ESS).

Awards:

• Student of the Year: The Student of the Year award is given to a student in their final year, who exemplifies engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering.

• Donna Geekie: The Donna Geekie Leadership award is given to the person eho exemplifies leadership within the engineering community.

• Golden Gear: The Golden Gear award goes to the person that most embodies the spirit of engineering.

• Teaching Excellence Award: (One from each department)

These awards will be given out at the Graduation Banquet.

5. Grad Photos

The final session of Grad Photos will take place in February 2014 and ESS will post on blackboard when the sign-up sheets are available. Don’t miss out!

6. Submit your Photos for the Yearbook

Did you know that all graduating students receive a free yearbook? Do you have good photos from your time in engineering that you think would look great in the yearbook?

Please contact our 2013/14 Yearbook Director, Praveen Mahendra at engineering1 at su.ucalgary.ca<mailto:engineering1 at su.ucalgary.ca> and he will send you instruction on how to upload your pictures.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

a. Do I have to go to the Banquet?

No, but you only graduated from engineering once, do you really want to stay home doing homework whilst everyone else you know if being treated to a fancy three course meal? The night includes award presentation, class historians, and oh so much more!

b. Why are the Banquet tickets so expensive?

The Banquet is a formal three course meal at the Hyatt and funding for the event comes from the ticket sales, department funding, and ESS. It will be worth it!

c. What is the dress code for the Iron Ring Ceremony and Banquet?

Business attire for the Iron Ring Workshop and the Ceremony and formal dress code for the Banquet; which means guys generally wear a dark coloured suit and tie and ladies may choose to wear a formal dress.

Please do keep in mind that there is about a 2 hour break between the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet so there is time to change outfits if you choose to. In the past students have chosen to rend rooms at the Hyatt.

d. Can we stay at the Hyatt?
The Hyatt is offering us a room rate of $129.00 per night. If you are interested, please email grad2014sse at gmail.com<mailto:grad2014sse at gmail.com> for the registration code.

e. Should I bring my parents to the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet?

Both events are parent friendly, so yes you may bring them. Grandparents and siblings are also welcome at the Banquet. Tables at the Hyatt seat 12, so plan accordingly.

Please note, that it has been requested by APEGA that children under 12 and infants not be in attendance at the Iron Ring Ceremony. Please see the FAQ under the Iron Ring information section.

f. What do parents go to?

Parents can attend the Iron Ring Ceremony at 1:30pm (no ticket required, but registration is a must – details to follow) and Banquet at 5:30pm (given you got a ticket for them). The Iron Ring Workshop in the morning is for students only. Also note that if your parents are late to the Iron Ring Ceremony they will not be let into the room. Once the doors are closed they won’t open them until the ceremony is over so BE THERE EARLY!

g. Is there an After Grad?

Yes! The After Grad is being organized by ESS. The location is to be determined – Stay tuned!

h. More questions:
