C- required in pre-requisite courses; check your W14 schedule for dropped courses Message-ID: <8C7413EFB632B54CBC7675BE2B656085A3D3D3@ITCIMEXCH01.uc.ucalgary.ca> Dear Students, A new pre-requisite rule has come into effect in Fall 2013; a minimum grade of C- is required in F13 semester courses in order to have the required pre-requisites achieved for W14 and future courses. This new regulation has been communicated to students since summer of 2013 in several e-mails: http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/en-3-3.html Staff in the Engineering Undergraduate Studies Office have already started checking fall grades and we regret to advise that in case you have achieved any D/D+/F/I or W grades in fall that is pre-requisite for any subsequent Winter14 courses, you will be (or may have already been) dropped from those subsequent course(s). We continue to work on checking fall grades as they are posted and keep dropping students from winter courses as necessary. Please check your Student Center to review your winter timetable but note that you are responsible for verifying the accuracy of your registration and only remain registered in courses you are entitled to take in Winter14. Students must clear all pre-requisite courses (i.e., obtain a C- or better for all courses that are pre-requisites for core courses in their program) before they are allowed to register in the subsequent course. If you have questions about your winter courses, please feel free to contact us in the Engineering Undergraduate Studies Office. In January, we are available for drop-in advising from 9:30-3:30, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We are also available by phone and email. If you are in second year or above and already in a major/program, you should consult with your program director to understand how this will affect your ongoing schedule for next year, and to ask any questions you might have about your program. Do you have good photos from your time in engineering that you think would look great in the yearbook? Please contact our 2013/14 Yearbook Director, Praveen Mahendra at engineering1@su.ucalgary.ca and he will send you instruction on how to upload your pictures. 7. Frequently Asked Questions a. Do I have to go to the Banquet? No, but you only graduated from engineering once, do you really want to stay home doing homework whilst everyone else you know if being treated to a fancy three course meal? The night includes award presentation, class historians, and oh so much more! b. Why are the Banquet tickets so expensive? The Banquet is a formal three course meal at the Hyatt and funding for the event comes from the ticket sales, department funding, and ESS. It will be worth it! c. What is the dress code for the Iron Ring Ceremony and Banquet? Business attire for the Iron Ring Workshop and the Ceremony and formal dress code for the Banquet; which means guys generally wear a dark coloured suit and tie and ladies may choose to wear a formal dress. Please do keep in mind that there is about a 2 hour break between the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet so there is time to change outfits if you choose to. In the past students have chosen to rend rooms at the Hyatt. d. Can we stay at the Hyatt? The Hyatt is offering us a room rate of $129.00 per night. If you are interested, please email grad2014sse@gmail.com for the registration code. e. Should I bring my parents to the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet? Both events are parent friendly, so yes you may bring them. Grandparents and siblings are also welcome at the Banquet. Tables at the Hyatt seat 12, so plan accordingly. Please note, that it has been requested by APEGA that children under 12 and infants not be in attendance at the Iron Ring Ceremony. Please see the FAQ under the Iron Ring information section. f. What do parents go to? Parents can attend the Iron Ring Ceremony at 1:30pm (no ticket required, but registration is a must ? details to follow) and Banquet at 5:30pm (given you got a ticket for them). The Iron Ring Workshop in the morning is for students only. Also note that if your parents are late to the Iron Ring Ceremony they will not be let into the room. Once the doors are closed they won?t open them until the ceremony is over so BE THERE EARLY! g. Is there an After Grad? Yes! The After Grad is being organized by ESS. The location is to be determined ? Stay tuned! h. More questions: For any questions on the Iron Ring and Convocation please inquire at the Undergrad Office (ENC 204) and for the Graduation Banquet inquire in ESS (ENE 132). Hope this helps! Message-ID: <40fc3c9801ec0055a4fa80882faa3898.squirrel@webmail.ucalgary.ca> Hey Civils! This is Carly Woodman coming at you. For those of you who don't know (which is probably most of you) I'm Civil's Yearbook Rep for this year! It's probably the best CEUS position ever, even if it is an unofficial one. Anyways, I need all of you to help me make Civil look as awesome as humanly possible in this year's yearbook. Of course, everyone who is graduating will get their grad photo in the yearbook (assuming you got grad photos done). Civil also gets 4 full pages (like 2 full spreads) of candid photos, which is what I need your help with. It's my goal to get a sweet representation of the entire Civil population. My focus will be on graduating students, because we are typically the ones who actually pick up a copy of the yearbook, but if you're in lower years and have sweet photos I still want to see them. Easy steps to get you and your friends in the yearbook: Email me at carly.woodman@gmail.com asking for a link to the yearbook photo dropbox. Unfortunately, I can't just send a link to you all, as it won't let you upload your photos that way. So, EMAIL ME! Once I've sent you the link, upload any photos you'd like to see in the yearbook. Perhaps make a folder with your name so I know who the photos came from. Wait patiently until yearbooks are printed. I should also note that all graduating students get a FREE yearbook! I need you guys to take initiative with this. It will seriously take you 5 minutes. If no one takes initiative, I guess I will just have to fill our pages with selfies. And no one wants to see that. Thanks for your help everyone! With that date fast approaching, the grad committee is looking for some wonderful people who are interested in participating in the ceremonies. We are looking to fill the following positions: Master of Ceremonies - 1 guy and 1 girl (preferably from different departments and to audition together) to introduce each speaker and make announcements. Professor Award Presenter - 1 student for each department to present the professor award to the chosen professor. Toast to the Parents - 1 student to deliver a toast to the parents. Toast to the Professors - 1 or 2 students to deliver a toast to the professors. Toast to the Volunteers - 1 or 2 students to deliver a toast to all of the volunteers. Class Historians - 1 or 2 students per department to reflect on the fun/joys/hardships/suffering of the past 4, 5, 6, or more, years in an entertaining (but professional) way. Presentations are often made in the form of power point, video, or just a slide show. If you are interested in any of the above positions, please let us know via email by March 3, 2014: grad2014sse@gmail.com. Auditions will take place on March 5, 2014 between 6pm and 8pm. More specific information will be given once people have volunteered. Just to note, by replying to this email you are only showing interest and are not committing to nor are you guaranteed any of the positions. Also, if you are interested in participating but have forgotten how to write in English after all those math classes, don?t worry! There will be lots of people to help you. This is our last event before we are done school, so get involved and make it an event to remember! Here is a timeline of event: 8:15 am to 12 pm - APEGA Workshops (Telus Convention Center) (Details in package provided to you when you registered for the Iron Ring at the Undergrad Office, also remember to bring your filled out application) 12 pm to 1 pm - Free Lunch provided by APEGA for all who attended the workshops (Telus Convention Center) 1:30 pm - IRON RING CEREMONY (Telus Convention Center) 3:00 pm (Or whenever the Ceremony ends) ? Department photos (An announcement will be made at the ceremony. Each department has a 10min time slot for their photo.) After Department Photos up to 5:30pm - Free Time to do as you please! 5:30 pm ? 2014 GRADUATION BANQUET (Hyatt Regency Calgary ? Imperial Ballroom) 5:30-6:15 pm - Cocktails (Cash Bar) 6:00 pm ? Banquet hall doors open ? There will be seating charts ? every seat is spoken for ? so please do not change your seats/tables!! ? If you have special meal requests, there will be a card at your table. You must present this card to your server in order to receive your meal. 6:30 pm-10 pm ? Formal portion of the Banquet 10:15 pm -10:45 pm ? Shuttles to The Roadhouse where the Aftergrad will take place. Please note that you do not need to wait for the shuttles. Here are answers to some other FAQs: What do parents go to? Parents can go to the Iron Ring Ceremony at 1:30pm (no ticket required) and the Banquet at 5:30pm (given you got tickets for them). The workshops in the morning are for students only. Also be advised that if your parents are late for the Iron Ring Ceremony they will not be let into the room. Once they close the doors they won't open them until the ceremony is over so BE THERE EARLY! What's happening with Aftergrad tickets? You get one free Aftergrad ticket for each banquet ticket you purchased (If you did not receive your banquet tickets via email ? contact ess@ucalgary.ca). You can redeem your Aftergrad tickets at the banquet by showing your banquet e-tickets at the registration table. They're good for no line no cover until 11pm and include one free drink! If you didn't purchase banquet tickets but wish to attend the Aftergrad, you should try to get them from someone who's going to the banquet but not using their Aftergrad tickets (i.e. parent's tickets). Aftergrad tickets will not be sold separately. The Aftergrad is not a private function so in the case you can't get tickets you can always go to The Roadhouse on your own. You'll just have to wait in line and pay for cover. Hope that clears up any confusion and that you all know now where to go! If you do have additional questions regarding the Banquet and Aftergrad please email grad2014sse@gmail.com. For questions related to the Iron Ring Workshop and Ceremony please contact the Undergrad office. On behalf of the Graduation Committee, Congratulations for making it to the end of this long road! "Tianjin University is a leading university in the technology industries in China, and will play a key role in the development of renewable energy in China." said Dr Ari Kristinn J?nsson, President of the University of Reykjavik during the signing. The Chinese government has adopted an ambitious environmental policy. To achieve its objectives, it is necessary to educate professionals in the field of renewable energy. The agreement at Reykjavik University is a part of this plan. This is the second contract this year that RU has signed with a Chinese university, in May RU signed a similar agreement with the China University of Geo-sciences. "The development of renewable energy resources is one of the greatest challenges the world's population faces. Iceland is an international leader in the use of renewable energy, so we have valuable knowledge to share with other countries, both through education and partnership development. RU is working around the world in the transmission of this expertise." Dr Ari Kristinn J?nsson. David Keith, Professor at MIT Sloan School of Management, gave a talk as a part of Iceland School of Energy?s "Meet the Energy Industry" lecture series. David Keith leads the MIT project on modelling alternative fuel vehicle implementation. David outlined the hybrid and plug-in hybrid evolution in the US and the difficulties these emerging technologies have to overcome, to be viewed as a viable transport method. David demonstrated system dynamic models that are being developed within Sloan School of Management that focus on the market?s reaction to different levels of taxation, incentives and price of solar cells and alternative fuel vehicles. The alternative fuel vehicle model is very complex and allows the hypothetical testing of different scenarios. I know that Dr. Sen will do a tremendous job as ADSPD and will continue to build our student support and experiences through stewardship of the Schulich Student Activity Fund (which he will chair), the Maier Student Leadership Program (which he will now lead), Homes of Hope trips and support of the many clubs, teams and associations, as well as many other activities. When I became the Director of Students in 2006, then Dean and now President Dr. Elizabeth Cannon and I had no idea whatsoever the impact on having a Director devoted to Student Experiences would be, but I think the idea proved to be a good one! I personally had no hint of what was coming my way and it has been the most tremendous ride imaginable! Working with all of our students to make them feel comfortable and confident in their journey through the Schulich School of Engineering, getting to know the leaders of tomorrow, and learning from each and everyone of you, every step of the way has been the job of my lifetime! Thank-you to everyone who dropped by my door, said hello in the hallways, took my business card (whether you wanted it or not during FacOR) and brought me your great ideas. I will be on leave until July, but will be in and out of the school during the winter term. For those you celebrating Christmas and Chanukah, I hope you find comfort in the lessons and stories of holy birth and magical oil: for everyone, regardless of your faith and/or persuasion, I hope that during this darkest and coldest time of the year, you can find comfort and warmth with friends and family ? and of course, some food, fun and good times. Thank-you to everyone, Dr. Lynne -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
