Since October 2012, Rachel Duckhouse has been working as an artist in
residence through The City of Calgary's Watershed+ program; this has allowed
her to work closely with City's Water Resources' Water Services' and Parks'
staff, sharing research, data and knowledge. The resulting works freeze the
movement of water in time and space; her drawings are studies of the way
particles move through landscape, eliciting questions around the
architecture of our watershed.
Among the works in progress is the pen and ink drawing diptych Bow Flow
(2013), that maps sections of Calgary's Bow River as it travels through a
treatment plant, an irrigation canal, and various bridges. By depicting only
the water above ground and omitting surrounding architecture, Duckhouse
reveals how the river adapts to creates a system around city infrastructure.
Bridges and banks are blank islands around which water is drawn as an
organic mass verging on optical experiments in abstraction.
Rachel's residency is supported by The City of Calgary's Public Art Program,
The City of Calgary's Utilities and Environmental Protection Department, The
City of Calgary's Parks Department and has been hosted by Ralph Klein Park
and Telus Spark.
