The graduation committee is looking for people who are interested in participating in the ceremonies at various capacities. There are a number of roles that we are seeking students to fill: 1. Masters of Ceremonies: A male and female graduating student will introduce each speaker and make pertinent announcements. 2. Toast to the parents: One or two students will deliver a toast to the parents. 3. Toast to the professors: One or two students will deliver a toast to the professors. 4. Toast to the volunteers: One or two students will deliver a toast to all students who have volunteered their time during their degree. 5. Class historians: One or two students per department will reflect on the past 4, 5 or 6 years in an entertaining and professional way. This requires creation of a slideshow and/or a video. 6. Photographers: Non-graduating student photographers to take pictures at the Iron Ring ceremony at 3:30pm and at the grad banquet in the evening. The speaking roles require one to be able to speak in front of a large group of people and also be able to write their own speech. Looking for an innovative way to inform and advise new student groups about opportunities for study in Germany? This is a great program for helping returning study abroad students from Germany put their newly found knowledge and experience to good use. Nominate a DAAD Young Ambassador on your campus! DAAD is excited to announce the latest call for applications for its Young Ambassadors Program. DAAD Young Ambassadors are undergraduate students from North America who have recently studied (or completed research or an internship such as RISE) in Germany and are interested in promoting study in Germany at their home institutions. DAAD has 20 spots available for students from all over the US and Canada to help demonstrate to their peers what makes Germany such a unique and attractive destination for study abroad. DAAD Young Ambassadors are responsible for organizing at least one event per semester on their campuses to promote study in Germany. Additionally, they will collaborate with their universities' study abroad offices and other German institutions in their areas to inform their fellow students on educational and research opportunities in Germany. There are short profiles of the Young Ambassadors on the DAAD website, and they are available for email inquiries about their respective German host universities, study abroad programs or about life as a student in Germany as general. Applications must be received by May 19, 2013. Although students may apply directly to DAAD to become a Young Ambassador, special preference will be given to candidates nominated by their university's study abroad office. (Only one student should be nominated per college or university.) Complete program information, including application and nomination forms, is available at www.daad.org/ambassadors If you have any additional questions about the program or application process, please contact Christine Sonnet at sonnet@daad.org or (212) 758-3223, ext. 213 _____ Advertisement : : Study in English - Live in German(y) International M.Sc. That is why the worldwide sales and marketing activities of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) are focusing on youth travel in 2013. The core elements of the campaign are a mobile app and a new microsite. As most young adults now take their smartphones with them when travelling or on holiday, the GNTB has brought out a Youth HotSpot mobile app as part of the campaign. The app is available free of charge from the App Store and on Google Play. It provides young international travellers with an overview of 1,300 open-access Wi-Fi hotspots in Germany, enabling them to access social networks for free. The original HotSpots were selected on the basis of surveys of young Germans. Users will be able to update the map with their own HotSpots and share them with their friends on Facebook and other social media. In doing so, they will be creating user-generated content for the microsite and thereby becoming part of the campaign themselves. To find out more about the microsite and the app, please visit: www.germany.travel/youth/index/start/ About the GNTB The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) has its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It works on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) to represent Germany as a tourist destination and is funded by the Ministry in accordance with a decision taken by the German Bundestag. The GNTB develops and communicates strategies and products to promote Germany's positive image abroad as a tourist destination and to encourage tourists to visit the country. It has 30 agencies around the world to support its activities. www.daad.org * daadny@daad.org Copyright 2013 German Exchange Service. All Rights Reserved. How to find your program: In order to find whether you have been admitted into the minor program you have applied for in Fall 2013, please sign on to your Student Centre. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, under Admissions, click on the Change of Program link. Admissions Incomplete Complete Admitted Cancelled Tentative Admission - Outstanding Items My Applications Schulich Sch of EN Bachelor's Fall 2013 Links Change of Program Students applied for changing their major: Decisions for students who applied for transferring between engineering major programs with very different requirements, have already been made, e.g. from Electrical Engineering to Chemical Engineering, etc. The new major program has already been posted. Decisions for students who applied to switch between major programs with similar requirements have not been made yet. We are going to send out a separate e-mail to those students later this week with more detailed information when they can expect results. You may begin registering in your courses as of your Enrollment Appointment Date and time as indicated in your online Student Center. Please note that all continuing students must register in both their Fall 2013 and Winter 2014 courses by July 15th to confirm their attendance for the 2013/2014 academic year. Space in your program and/or in the courses of your program will not be guaranteed after this date. The July 15th date will be strictly enforced for technical engineering courses. If you are going into your final year we recommend that you discuss your registration with your program director to ensure that you enroll in all of your appropriate required courses so as to be ready for graduation. Please note that our university's registration system requires students to register one course at a time. PeopleSoft may malfunction if more than one course is submitted from the shopping cart during registration, and this may result in the system enrolling students either with time conflicts, or allowing registration in courses without having the proper pre-requisites completed, etc. A time conflict between the lectures of two courses will also likely result in conflicting final exams at the end of the term. It is ultimately the students' responsibility to enroll only in courses for which they possess a successfully completed pre-requisite, and with the proper time conflict approval. If it is detected at any time during the semester that a student takes course/s without the proper pre-requisite(s) without approval, they will be removed from the course regardless of the reason why the unacceptable registration happened. Further info on registration process can be found under: http://www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/registration The engineering program requirements: http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/en-4.html We are still working on putting together the 2013/2014 curriculum sheets and they will be available at: http://schulich.ucalgary.ca/undergraduate/curriculum_sheets In the meantime you need to refer to the program requirements of the University Calendar, under the above link. Please check your schedule into the second and third week of classes to see all labs. Odd numbered labs may not appear in your timetable until the third week. If you find that a course you require is full or you have other difficulties with registration, please contact our office for assistance. Students must register in their lower level courses before registering in next year's courses. Only a C- grade is acceptable on any second attempt regardless what the reason is for your having to repeat a course. New academic regulation taking effect in Fall 2013 Please note a new regulation taking effect at the beginning of the Fall 2013 session: "To register in an undergraduate course delivered by the Schulich School of Engineering, a student must have obtained a grade of at least "C-" or better in each prerequisite course. Prior to Fall 2013 "D" and "D+" grades were acceptable as prerequisites (except when such grades meant that credit would not be given for the course under Student Standing regulations). If a student obtained a "D" or "D+" in a course in Summer 2013 or earlier (and is not required by Student Standing regulations to repeat the course), the grade in that course will be considered acceptable in courses for which it is a prerequisite." For the full regulations please refer to the following link: http://www.ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/en-3-4.html Thank you, Engineering Undergraduate Studies Office E-mail: engginfo@ucalgary.ca Phone: 403-220-5732 Reminder: Please do not reply to this email as the ENGG mailing list is not configured to reply to individual emails. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Do you like robots? Want to spend some quality time with them, starting with the Lego Mindstorms platform? If yes, you should check out the Schulich Community Robotics Program (SCRP). We teach kids how to use the Lego Mindstorms and have a tonne of fun in the process. Don't know anything about robotics? Not a problem! Each mentor gets their own Mindstorms kit to train on before you ever guide kids through building and/or programming their own simple robots. If you are not interested in guiding kids, you can still help us design crazy robot competition challenges, learn how to use the Mindstorms, or just plain hang out with us during build sessions. Now if you don't eat/sleep/breath robots, you're probably wondering what's in it for you: 1. It's really fun. 2. You can get co-curricular record for it. 3. You can make industry contacts. 4. She will be joined for the talk by Twyla Hutchison, who is a Water Resources Engineer with Infrastructure Planning at the City of Calgary. Twyla is involved with river levels monitoring and forecasting, emergency mitigation as well as other development in the river valley. The lecture will be followed by a reception with music provided by Schulich Soundstage Location : Professional Faculties Building A, Room 2160 Since October 2012, Rachel Duckhouse has been working as an artist in residence through The City of Calgary's Watershed+ program; this has allowed her to work closely with City's Water Resources' Water Services' and Parks' staff, sharing research, data and knowledge. The resulting works freeze the movement of water in time and space; her drawings are studies of the way particles move through landscape, eliciting questions around the architecture of our watershed. Among the works in progress is the pen and ink drawing diptych Bow Flow (2013), that maps sections of Calgary's Bow River as it travels through a treatment plant, an irrigation canal, and various bridges. By depicting only the water above ground and omitting surrounding architecture, Duckhouse reveals how the river adapts to creates a system around city infrastructure. Bridges and banks are blank islands around which water is drawn as an organic mass verging on optical experiments in abstraction. Rachel's residency is supported by The City of Calgary's Public Art Program, The City of Calgary's Utilities and Environmental Protection Department, The City of Calgary's Parks Department and has been hosted by Ralph Klein Park and Telus Spark. Thank you in advance for even opening this email because we have never met. I came across your email address while researching engineering departments for a current business idea. Currently I?m working to find the right engineering style for the design of an outdoor camping tent idea. I?ve unfortunately had a difficult time narrowing down what kind of engineer we need to design this outdoor tent. We first thought a material engineer would be best because we are dealing with textiles, but then we also need this tent to withstand various structural needs (wind, snow, etc). There is also a need for the overall design of this camping tent (this is how we came across your email on the U of C website). Considering we have never personally met I do not expect anything, but maybe your expertise on engineering can help us narrow down what style of engineering. Thank you very much, Alistair Shipley -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
