TO ALL 4TH/5TH YEAR ENGG STUDENTS"
Hello Graduating Students,
I've had a lot of questions lately about various aspects related to
Graduation. Please use this checklist for everything related to graduation
and Iron Ring. This message is long, but please read it and keep a copy of
this email to make sure you don't forget any important steps. There is also
a list of FAQ questions at the bottom.
Step 1) Apply to graduate on Peoplesoft
- The deadline to apply to graduate is Feb 1st. If you haven't done this
yet, log on now! Make sure that your name is correct, because this is how it
will be printed on your degree. Contact the convocation office if you
require changes.
Step 2) Sign up for Iron Ring Ceremony and find out your ring size
- The sign up for Iron Ring begins Feb 6th and ends March 2nd. Do this
ASAP!! The next ceremony isn't until November, so you really don't want to
miss this one. You can sign up in the Undergrad office (ENC 204) or by
email at engginfo at ucalgary.ca
- You should have recently received an email from the undergrad office about
signing up for Iron ring. It also mentions that you need to get your pinkie
sized at a jewelry store (any jewelry store can do that for you)
- The Undergrad Office will give you an APEGGA package with further details
about the ceremony, and a registration sheet that you must bring with you to
the Iron Ring Workshop.
- Your APEGGA Member-In-Training registration and your ring are FREE if you
attend the workshop/ceremony. If you do not attend, you have to pay.
- If you have a friend or family member who is a professional engineer they
may be able to present your iron ring to you at the ceremony.
- Please consult your APEGGA workshop package for further details.
Step 3) Buy your tickets for the Graduation Banquet (banquet is on March
24th at the Hyatt, the same day as the Iron Ring Ceremony)
- Ticket prices have not been determined as of yet, but will likely be
roughly $60 - $70. Cash or cheques accepted. Tickets will go on sale
February 27th in the ESS office.
Step 4) Submit your nominations for ESS Student Awards and Professor of the
Year Awards
- Do you know a student or a professor who is deserving of an award? If so,
submit a nomination! Nomination forms will be available at
www.ess.ucalgary.ca <http://www.ess.ucalgary.ca/> . (DETAILS TO FOLLOW)
- These awards will be given out at the Graduation Banquet on March 24th
Step 5) Get your Grad Photos Taken
- FINAL session of pictures is being taken from February 1-10. Sign up
sheets are available in ESS (ENE 132)
Step 6) Submit your photos for the yearbook
- Do you have good photos from your department, club or engineering event?
We would love to include your photos in the yearbook. All graduating
students receive a free yearbook. To submit pictures you can either:
a. Go to the Jostens link: http://www.replayit.com/r/ -- When
registering to submit pictures search for: Schulich School of Engineering
(school passcode: supercow2012)
b. Drop off a USB key or CD with your name on it at the ESS office --
USB keys will be returned once the pictures are copied from it
- If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
communications at ess.ucalgary.ca
Finally, here is a FAQ answering several common questions I have heard
lately:
Q: Do I have to go to the banquet?
A: No, but you only graduate from engineering once, do you really want to
stay home doing homework when everyone else you know is being treated to a
fancy four-course meal?
Q: Why are the banquet tickets so expensive?
A: The banquet is at the Hyatt and funding for the event comes from the
ticket sales and funding from the departments and ESS. Don't worry, it will
be worth it! See above for why you want to buy a ticket
Q: What should I wear to the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet?
A1: Business Attire for the Iron Ring workshop and Ceremony.
A2: The Graduation Banquet is Formal Dress, which means guys generally wear
a dark coloured suit and a tie. Ladies may choose to wear a dress or a
skirt. (Don't worry there is about a two hour break between the ceremony and
the banquet, so there is time to change your outfit if you choose to). Check
out the gallery of photos from last year's banquet on www.ess.ucalgary.ca
<http://www.ess.ucalgary.ca/> .
Q: Should I bring my parents to the Ring Ceremony and the Banquet?
A: Yes, these are both parent-friendly events. Your parents will want to
share in your graduation celebrations! Grandparents and siblings are also
welcome. Please note, that it has been requested by APEGGA that children
under 12 and infants not be in attendance.
Q: Is there an after-grad?
A: Yes, the after-grad is being organized by ESS. More details will be
released closer to the date.
Q: What do parents go to?
A: Parents can go to the Iron Ring Ceremony at 1:30pm (no ticket required)
and the Banquet at 5:30pm (you can get them their tickets in ESS - see info
above). The workshops in the morning are for students only. Also be advised
that if your parents are late for the Iron Ring Ceremony they will not be
let into the room. Once they close the doors they won't open them until the
ceremony is over so BE THERE EARLY!
