REPORT TO STUDENTS ON THE SCHULICH STUDENT ACTIVITIES FUND

As you may know, the Schulich School of Engineering has a one-stop-shop for
outside-of-classroom learning, from club and team activities, to study
abroad, to leadership experiences.

This program, unique to the University of Calgary, has now been in operation
for five full years, and we provide this summary report.

1) INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Since Oct 2005, the Schulich Student Activities Fund has sent 1245 students
on international trips as follows:

-- 928 on group trips (France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, India, San
Francisco, New York)
-- 120 students to Crete Study Abroad
-- 90 students to China Study Abroad
-- 55 students on international study abroad exchanges
-- 50 grad students to international conferences

-- 120 students to international competitions

2) EXPERIENCE WITHIN CANADA
Since Oct 2005, the Schulich Student Activities Fund has sent 821 students
on national trips as follows:

-- Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race Team to Ottawa, Montreal, Hamilton,
Sherbrooke, Edmonton

-- Petroleum Engineering Society trips to Fort McMurray
-- Annual student delegates and competitors to Canadian Federation of
Engineering Students, Western Engineering Competition, Canadian Engineering
Competition
-- Concordia Troitsky Bridge Team to Montreal

3) The exact total of the cheques issued to students for these activities
varies from year to year, depending on the number of applications that meet
the eligibility criteria.

Awards granted by year to date are as follows:

2005 -- $366,928
2006 -- $400,000
2007 -- $500,000
2008 -- $530,768
2009 -- $615,000
2010 -- $685,000

Applications are evaluated by a committee of students (one from each of the
major programs, plus an ESS representative), alumni and grad students as
well as three academics.

The initial 500,000 fund was established by Seymour Schulich and has been
increased to $685,000 with additional funding by APEGGA, Lafarge, and Penn
West.

No other engineering school in this country has a program like this to
enrich student learning.

On behalf of the Schulich Student Activities Fund committee, I want to thank
our students for making the most of this opportunity fund, and for making
this an amazing engineering school!

Dr. Lynne
