When: Wednesday January 19, 2011 Where: ENE 328 Time: 6:00pm to 7:00pm Petroleum Production Engineering - Production Analysis & Stimulation Effectiveness At this time, with current economic constraints, any petroleum company/operator is concerned about the costs associated with their operations, the decision-making process and the resulting methods employed. As such engineers (especially new engineers) need to make careful and thought out decisions to maximize revenue and minimize costs. In this presentation a real-world example will be presented as a framework for discussion of the strengths and limitations of methods used to make value-added decisions. There will be a focus on analyzing production data and the economic impact of decisions about treatment additives, proppant conductivity, fluid types, job size, and other mechanisms typical used to extend the production lives of well and generally increase well production. The methods and metrics presented will account for different operating practices, reservoir quality, and other pertinent variables encountered in petroleum operations. Methods will also be suggested that increase value at substantially less cost. These methods are consistent with the new reserves evaluation concepts supported by the SEC and the example will also show the consequences of certain decisions in dollar value. This presentation will be especially useful for engineers thinking about working in the Petroleum Engineering field or engineers already practicing. Biography of James Warren Crafton James Crafton is the founder of Performance Sciences, Inc. of Evergreen, Colorado. He graduated from University of Missouri Rolla in 1965 with a Bachelor's Degree in mining engineering, petroleum option, and in 2002 received the Honorary Degree of Professional Petroleum Engineer. He earned a Master's Degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1966 and a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Tulsa in 1975. As Chief Reservoir Engineer at Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, he began the development of production data analysis in conjunction with pipeline and reservoir management, in addition to managing the company's explorations and development activities in the DJ Basin, Powder River Basin, Piceance Basin, eastern Green River Basin, as well as all Mid-Continent activities. While on the faculty at Colorado School of Mines, he taught pressure transient theory and integrated exploration methods for over ten years. He discovered the "Fluid Conveyor" system for moving fluids, recognized by the U.S. Patent Office as a new process for fluid transport. Dr. Crafton discovered and was granted the naming privilege for the Ricochet Formation and Unconformity, a major Gulf Coast geologic marker. He has developed the theoretical and practical bases for the Reciprocal Productivity IndexT technique which has become a practical method used worldwide for the evaluation of producing oil, gas and coal bed methane wells. Dr. Crafton was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer for the 2003-04 season and is now the Chair of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Distinguished Lecturer Committee. He is the Society of Petroleum Engineers Rocky Mountain Region recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to Production Engineering Award for 2006. He also received the Henry B. Matson Technical Achievement Award from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (Denver Section) in 1991. Professional and honorary society affiliations include the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Sigma Xi Scientific Honorary Society and others. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... UBC Thunderbird Robotics is pleased to invite you to the 7th Annual International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition (IARRC) 2011 to be held on July 23rd and 24th, 2011 on the beautiful campus of the University of British Columbia. This year over $10,000 in prizes is at stake! A Robotics Technology Exhibition is also being planned. What is IARRC? IARRC is aimed at promoting R&D efforts into fully autonomous small-size ground vehicles - in particular the associated artificial intelligence software systems that run these vehicles. Student teams attending in the competition are expected to develop intelligent robots able to navigate a complex road course while avoiding the obstacles and responding to traffic signs and signals installed along their path without any human guidance. IARRC first took place at the University of Waterloo in April 2005. Last year's event was held at the University of Windsor while this year, UBC Thunderbird Robotics is proud to host IARRC 2011 at the University of British Columbia's Vancouver Campus. Why participate? This year, we will be handing out the greatest amount of awards and prizes ever! The Grand Award is $5,000 in cash while the overall runner-up will receive an award of $2,000. Awards will also be made to the best team in each individual component of the competition (i.e., Design Competition, Drag Race, and Circuit Race). Additional awards have been allocated for the two best first-time-attending teams. Besides the opportunity to win prize money, the learning experience and companionship with other Robotics enthusiasts is priceless. We encourage all student teams from high schools, colleges, and universities to participate and share their ideas and robots with other participants and the general public who will attend this event and the associated Exhibition. Need more information? Please visit our website at http://www.robotracing2011.com or email us at robotracing2011@gmail.com with your questions, suggestions and recommendations. This program, unique to the University of Calgary, has now been in operation for five full years, and we provide this summary report. 1) INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE Since Oct 2005, the Schulich Student Activities Fund has sent 1245 students on international trips as follows: -- 928 on group trips (France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, India, San Francisco, New York) -- 120 students to Crete Study Abroad -- 90 students to China Study Abroad -- 55 students on international study abroad exchanges -- 50 grad students to international conferences -- 120 students to international competitions 2) EXPERIENCE WITHIN CANADA Since Oct 2005, the Schulich Student Activities Fund has sent 821 students on national trips as follows: -- Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race Team to Ottawa, Montreal, Hamilton, Sherbrooke, Edmonton -- Petroleum Engineering Society trips to Fort McMurray -- Annual student delegates and competitors to Canadian Federation of Engineering Students, Western Engineering Competition, Canadian Engineering Competition -- Concordia Troitsky Bridge Team to Montreal 3) The exact total of the cheques issued to students for these activities varies from year to year, depending on the number of applications that meet the eligibility criteria. Awards granted by year to date are as follows: 2005 -- $366,928 2006 -- $400,000 2007 -- $500,000 2008 -- $530,768 2009 -- $615,000 2010 -- $685,000 Applications are evaluated by a committee of students (one from each of the major programs, plus an ESS representative), alumni and grad students as well as three academics. The initial 500,000 fund was established by Seymour Schulich and has been increased to $685,000 with additional funding by APEGGA, Lafarge, and Penn West. No other engineering school in this country has a program like this to enrich student learning. On behalf of the Schulich Student Activities Fund committee, I want to thank our students for making the most of this opportunity fund, and for making this an amazing engineering school! Please use this checklist for everything related to graduation and Iron Ring! This message is long, but please read it and keep a copy of this email to make sure you don't forget any important steps. There is also a fabulous list of FAQ questions at the bottom. Step 1) Apply to Graduate on Peoplesoft - The deadline to apply to graduate is February 1st. If you haven't done this yet, log on now! - Make sure that your name is correct, because this is how it will be printed on your degree. Contact the convocation office if you require changes. Step 2) Sign up for Iron Ring Ceremony (April 2) and find out your Ring Size in the Undgergrad Office - The sign up for Iron Ring is in the Undergrad office (they will send out an email with deadline dates). Do this ASAP!! The next ceremony isn't until November, so you really don't want to miss this one. - The Undergrad Office will give you an APEGGA package with further details about the ceremony, and a registration sheet that you must bring with you to the Iron Ring Workshop. - Your APEGGA Member-In-Training registration and your ring are FREE if you attend the workshop/ceremony. If you do not attend, you have to pay. - If you have a family member who is a professional engineer with 15 years experience, they may be able to present your iron ring to you at the ceremony. - Please consult your APEGGA workshop package for further details. Step 3) Buy your tickets for the Graduation Banquet (banquet is on April 2, the same day as the Iron Ring Ceremony) - Ticket prices have not been determined as of yet, but will likely be roughly $60. Cash or cheques accepted. Tickets will go on sale March 28th. Step 4) Submit your nominations for ESS Student Awards and Professor of the Year Awards - Do you know a student or a professor who is deserving of an award? If so, submit a nomination! - Nomination forms will be available at www.ess.ucalgary.ca. (DETAILS TO FOLLOW) - These awards will be given out at the Graduation Banquet on April 2nd Step 5) Get your Grad Photos Taken - Final session of pictures is being taken from Jan 31-Feb 4th. Sign up sheets are available in ESS (ENE 132) Step 6) Submit your photos for the yearbook! - Do you have good photos from Engg Week or engineering life in general from the last few years that you think would look great in the yearbook? And all graduating students receive a free yearbook. There are two easy and convenient ways to submit pictures: a. Go to the Jostens link: http://bit.ly/gnqWAN. b. Or there will be a laptop in the ESS Office for drop-off from January 24 - 28. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact publications@ess.ucalgary.ca Finally, I will finish with an FAQ answering several common questions that students ask. Q: Do I have to go to the banquet? A: No, but you only graduate from engineering once, do you really want to stay home doing homework when everyone else you know is being treated to a fancy four course meal? Q: Why are the banquet tickets so expensive? A: The banquet is at the Hyatt and funding for the event comes from the ticket sales and funding from the departments and ESS. Don't worry, it will be worth it! See above for why you want to buy a ticket :) Q: What should I wear to the Iron Ring Ceremony and the Banquet? A1: Business Attire for the Iron Ring workshop and Ceremony. A2: The Graduation Banquet is Formal Dress, which means guys generally wear a dark coloured suit and a tie. Ladies may choose to wear a dress or a skirt. (Don't worry there is about a two hour break between the ceremony and the banquet, so there is time to change your outfit if you choose to). Check out the gallery of photos from last year's banquet on www.ess.ucalgary.ca. Q: Should I bring my parents to the Ring Ceremony and the Banquet? A: Yes, these are both parent-friendly events. Your parents will want to share in your graduation celebrations! Grandparents and siblings are also welcome. Please note, that it has been requested by APEGGA that children under 12 and infants not be in attendance. APEGGA has a requested that students limit their guests to two per student. Q: Is there an After Grad? A: Yes, the aftergrad is being organized by ESS. More details will be released closer to the date. Q: What do parents go to? A: Parents can go to the Iron Ring Ceremony at 1:30pm (no ticket required) and the Banquet at 5:30pm (given you got tickets for them). The workshops in the morning are for students only. Also be advised that if your parents are late for the Iron Ring Ceremony they will not be let into the room. Once they close the doors they won't open them until the ceremony is over so BE THERE EARLY! Message-ID: Hello all Civil Students! Just a reminder to students who have completed third year.....according to the calendar..... Admission to Minors Choice of a Minor within an engineering program (e.g., Civil Engineering with a Minor in Environmental Engineering) is made during April of the third year or of the internship year, except as noted below for the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. To be admitted to a minor in the fourth year, a student must have completed third year in the appropriate engineering program and have a GPA of at least 2.00 in the student's last review period. In the event that the number choosing a Minor exceeds the number that can be accommodated, students will be admitted to the Minor in order of academic performance until the enrolment limit is reached. Academic performance means the student's GPA on only those courses taken in his/her last review period that are required for the engineering program. So, if you are planning to complete a minor, you must do that before the beginning of your 4th year!! See you in September and I'm always available by email to help you out with course selections. For those of you in the City, I can also meet face to face. Have a great summer and remember to have some patio time....(GT's)!!!! Hope you all enjoyed some patio/cabin/lake/quiet/campsite time this past weekend and that you have all recovered from the exams. I also hope that you have settled into your summer/internship jobs and that your bank accounts are beginning to recover! I'm still here if you need help and/or guidance and I thought I'd pass on some advice to those of you contemplating your course selections. Students coming into 3rd year have limited selection, so this email may be of more importance to the incoming 4th year. 1. If you are interested in pursuing either the Tran or Structures Minor, you must apply before 4th year. This can be done via email to me or through the Undergrad Office. It is particularly important for the Structures Minors as the EVDA tech elective is only open to students in that minor and you don't want to miss a spot! 2. I highly recommend that you study your degree navigator and the calendar before you get too far into course selection. This is your last year and be sure you have all those lovely green check marks - it makes both of our lives much easier if we don't have to do everything manually for you in a panic, because you weren't clued in. I have a sign on my fridge at home that I used (and still use) all through my kids growing up "Lack of planning on YOUR part does not constitute an emergency on MY part"...same applies to you guys. 3. You are able to take one non-civil course as a technical elective and need approval to do so. I give that approval and can do it by email if you are considering such an option. The most popular course seems to be ENEE 573. 4. You are also able to take one 600+ course if your GPA is>3.0. In this case, you need not only my approval, but also the prof's approval. 5. If you are behind in a course (let's say for the case of illustration - ENCI 451), all is not lost and with careful course selection, you should be able to graduate on time. This may need a meeting between the two of us to work out a plan - don't despair and don't delay! 6. If I can also offer some advice as to loading your courses - ENCI 570 is set up so that approx 25% of the work is done in Fall and 75% in the winter. As the course does not have a weekly lectures (although there are two time slots on your schedule to allow for group meetings and mid-term presentations), you might want to consider taking 570 plus 5 courses in Fall (total 6) and 570 plus 3 in Winter (total 4). This will de-stress you during the crunch time in March! Hope this helps - now resume what you were doing! Dr. Lynne -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Although there will be no Convocation Ceremony, students who complete degree requirements will be deemed to officially graduate and will have their transcript reflect that status. You will also be eligible to attend the Convocation Ceremony in June. If you believe that you will complete your degree requirements by the end of December 2011, you can apply to graduate online beginning Monday, September 26 (or shortly thereafter). Deadline to apply for Winter graduation is December 1. The Schulich School of Engineering Undergraduate Studies Committee will then meet in late January to review and approve candidates for graduation. It is expected that you will get confirmation of your graduation by February 17 and that your transcript will then show that you have graduated. We also anticipate that your degree certificate will also be available sometime after that date, although we have not been able to confirm that for sure at this point. If you expect to complete your degree requirements by the end of the Winter 2012 term (April 2012), please wait with applying for graduation until January 2012. The deadline to apply for Spring graduation will be February 1, 2012. Complete information will be available very soon at http://www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/grad Please let us know if you have any questions about this new graduation process. We noticed that as soon as we arrived, but last night over dinner and again this morning we heard and saw some amazing birds (or was that a bat?). Our current digs are a very spacious and modern three bedroom apartment (almost like one of the solar homes I saw last week in Washington DC) that has a huge balcony where we eat our meals. Last night at dinner we were amazed at a huge bird or bat swooping past us. At the same time the birds in the trees across from us were hooting, squeaking and screeching in a tropical evening concert. One of them sounded like a small complaining child. Another bird sounds like the ice cream truck, seriously- doo doo doodle oodle doo doo... The teams are beginning to arrive at Hidden Valley Motorsport park and it is nice to see three canadian flags (Toronto, us and ETS). Today they posted team names over the bays so we are getting closer to the event. While Scott, Mico, Jeff and Brandon worked on the car, Jordyn, Christie and I continued to gather necessary bits and pieces (2.5kg vats of petroleum jelly, vinyl and velcro for weatherproofing, cables for Jeff, bolts for Scott and lunch for everyone). It's a good thing we have two cars! My big score was to find a sewing machine for rent and so I am back at the apartment making waterproof wheel covers designed to keep the drivers dry. I'll be amazed if we need them, but better safe than sorry! Dinner tonight will be at the Mindil Beach sunset market and then early to bed. Not only does 5am come soon, but the team and car are at an Oil and Gas conference tomorrow at the request of ConocoPhillips. They have been truly amazing support on the ground here in Darwin and we're glad to be able to show our car at one of their events. More on what they've done for us later. Message-ID: On Sunday we moved into a lovely 16 bed house complete with pool, hot tub and waterfall. The pool/spa/waterfall change colours at night which is like something out of 'Cribs'.... With the arrival of the rest of the team (Tim, John, George, Ed and Bob) on Sunday night the house is now quite full! Even after travelling for hours and hours they were keen to see the car and so were dropped off at the track for a few hours only. The nightly meeting at 10 forced them back to the house and the newbies were definitely struggling to keep awake. The track is filling up with most of the teams now in residence. Cars are in all stages of construction and power tools provide a steady background noise. Durham is gluing on solar cells, one of the Turkish teams (there are two) is buffing their canopy and the Iranian team unloaded their car in parts like a lego set. We are one of small group of teams that are tweaking and testing rather than full-on building their car.... and then there is Michigan with their semi trailer, rapid deployment tents and secretive nature.....they are driving their car without the aray, so we still haven't seen the whole unit...just like hiding the keel in America's Cup sailing! ETS (from Montreal) are the most laid back and provide a lovely island of Quebec joie de vivre in the crowd. One of their crew is a great guitarist so live music emanates from their bay and periodically the entire team sings 'Imagine'. Their trailer is hilarious- apart from the car bay, tool box and generator bays, they have a drop down counter top (for food prep), slide out barbecue and roof top mini-putt (where they charge $1CDN per putt). To round it out on the wall they've posted a Habs score sheet (goals for/against, win/loss)to make sure hockey still has a place. Last night the Canadian Alliance (us, ETS, UofT and Waterloo) had a barbecue at the ETS bay and it was the envy of quite a few other teams. Everyone brought their own food and it was a great chance to strengthen our Canadian network. The evening ended with aloud and lusty rendition of 'Oh Canada' (in both official languages, simultaneously). The Maple Leaf flies strongly in Darwin! Cheers! Message-ID: After much tweaking, some panic and an entire newly machined part Axiom is ready for scrutineering tomorrow morning at 7:30am. When a key part of the motor housing stripped on tuesday after a bolt came loose (titanium and aluminium don't play well together) we had to scramble to find a machine shop that could re-tool the piece. It took a bit of doing as we all tried to figure out what machinists are called here in Australia and therefore didn't know what to look for in the yellow pages...'Engineers' was the magic name (go figure!) and Scott soon had the files over to them. Eight hours later we had a steel part and the motor was back in place. In the meantime, the drivers got valuable track time using one of the backup motors and we were able to test out the array, telemetry, canopy, driver egress and general safety procedures. Speaking of safety, I think we have one of the highest safety levels amongst the teams and I've been horrified to see students grinding without goggles, others skylarking in the parking lot riding the roo-bar bumpers while doing donuts, and one student bracing a wood stud with his leg while running a skil saw towards his leg!!! Yikes!!! So, tonight the car will be loaded onto a truck and taken to the Darwin fairgounds for a 4hour window of scrutineering. The purpose of this exercise is to determine that all regulations have been met and that the car/team are road worthy. We anticipate a clear pass and can all relax tomorrow evening. Rob and Steve are in Tennant creek getting closer with the 6ton truck. Tomorrow the entire team will be here and so it'll be 'shrimp on the barbie' time!! Cheer us on - we can hear you from here!! Verification of completion of your degree will appear on your official transcript later in February, although there will be NO convocation ceremony. Students who complete graduation requirements in fall 2011 are eligible to participate in the June 2012 convocation ceremonies and will receive their degree then. Please do not choose Fall 2011 graduation term if you will not be finished your degree requirements by December 23. If you expect to complete your degree requirements at the end of the winter term (i.e., April 2012), then the deadline to apply for graduation is February 1, 2012. When you apply to graduate, you will choose Winter 2012 as your Expected Graduation Term. In May, we will review your record to verify and approve you for graduation. You will then be eligible to participate in the June 2012 Convocation. For further information about graduation & convocation, including the steps you need to take to graduate, please see http://www.ucalgary.ca/registrar/grad Reminder: Please do not reply to this message as the ENGG mailing list is not configured to reply to individual e-mails. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
