Hello civil students,
The follow are the main points from the Civil class meeting on Tuesday March
11, 2009, reguarding the future of final year technical electives:
- Courses that will NOT be offered in the 2009-2010 academic year:
- ENCI 547 - Theory of Structures II
- ENCI 535 - Open Channel Hydraulics (already unavailable as of
2008-2009 academic year)
- ENCI 573 - Highway Engineering
- ENCI 577 - Modelling of Transportation Systems
- The courses that were dropped for 2009-2010 were done so because there
is no one available to teach them; either due to sabbatical leaves,
retirement, or general absence. The department cannot afford to hire
sessional instructors to cover these courses. This is NOT to say they will
never be offered in the future; it just means they are unavailable until
teaching resources become available.
- A couple notable changes to the timetable:
- ENCI 513 will now be offered in Fall semester (previously offered in
Winter)
- ENCI 557 will now be offered in Fall semester (previously offered in
Winter)
- ENCI 555 will now be offered in Winter semester (previously offered
in Fall)
- If you wanted to do a MINOR in Structural, Transporation or
Environmental Engieering, the number of required courses for each minor has
changed from 5 required courses to now 4 REQUIRED COURSES (due to course
cut-backs). This does NOT means you take one less course, it just means
there is ONE LESS REQUIREMENT for completeing your minor.
- 4+1 PROGRAM: This program offered through Civil Engineering allows
undergraduate students to earn their Masters of Engineering (MEng.) in 1
year after completeing their undergraduate degree. What you MUST do in your
4th year of studies:
- Take 2 EXTRA courses (either two 500 level ENCI courses, or one 500
and one 600 ENCI), and declare them external to your degree
(this means if
you have 9 courses to complete in your 4th year, you would need to add 2
courses and compete 11 courses)
- These 2 courses external to your degree count toward your MEng.
requirements, allowing you to take 8 courses requirements
(instead of 10) to
complete your MEng. in the year following your undergraduate degree.
- For more information reguarding the 4+1 program, please see the
Civil Engineering Main Office.
- The steps currently being taken are part of a larger, overall
restructuring of the Civil Engineering programs beginning from second year
and continuing through to final year technical electives. These are proposed
to begin to take shape over the next 2 years.
Any questions, comments or concerns can be directed towards the Civil
Engineering Undergraduate Office or as always you are free to contact
ceus at ucalgary.ca and we can direct you to the proper contact.
