The essay competition is designed to encourage Canadian undergraduate students to think about and discuss the purpose of one's life. It involves students submitting an essay in English, not more than 2000 words long, by June 1st, 2007, on the following topic: "First ask yourself, is there a purpose to one's life? If your answer is no, why should we live at all? If your answer is yes, what do you think is the purpose of your life? Why? What kind of life will give (or you think will give) you the most fulfillment? How do you know? Is fulfillment relevant to a life well lived?" We plan to have all submitted essays judged by at least three members of our preliminary judging panel, comprised primarily of students on our organizing committee. The essays that make it through the preliminary process will be read again and judged by at least seven judges, and all finalists will be reviewed by a panel of five Queen's faculty members. Winners will be selected based on originality of ideas, clarity, persuasiveness of writing, accessibility of content to a general audience, and the quality of logic behind supporting arguments and counter-arguments. In order to give students an incentive to participate, the student submitting the essay judged most meritorious will win a cash prize of $2000. The students writing the second, third, fourth and fifth place essays will win cash prizes of $500 each. However, as writing a winning essay on this topic is no simple task, we are also offering students the additional incentive of having their work published in renowned undergraduate philosophy journals thereby giving them valuable exposure and a reward greater than one merely monetary. For more details on the terms and conditions of the competition, please check: http://www.queensu.ca/philosophy/index.php?option=content&pcontent=1&task=view&id=45&Itemid=77 If you are interested in supporting this competition, please forward the following email to all the undergraduate students in your university and inform us of your mailing address for posters. We will be mailing posters advertising the competition to you shortly. Thank you very much for your time. Sincerely, Amber Shin The QPLEC Committee Do you enjoy contemplating about the meaning of life? Have you had an epiphany about what it is all about? Then the Queen?s Purpose of Life Essay Competition (QPLEC) would love to hear all about your ideas! Here are some important facts about this competition: - Entrants must be a full time undergraduate student at any Canadian university - Essays should be no longer than 2000 words - There is a grand cash prize of $2000 and four cash prizes of $500 - Award winning essays will be published in various undergraduate journals - The deadline is June 1st 2007 For more information about submission conditions and procedures, please check: http://www.queensu.ca/philosophy/index.php?option=content&pcontent=1&task=view&id=45&Itemid=77 Sincerely, The QPLEC Committee -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We will show them presentations from each department, there will be a barbeque lunch and a presentation with guest speakers. Time commitment for this event is minimal. I would like to do a brief training session on Thursday March 29th and then you will be required to spend the day of Saturday March 31st at the University (8:00am-4:30pm). Benefits to you? A great Open House t-shirt, a volunteer thank you event, an experience to add to your list of involvements, and the pleasure of helping incoming engineering students! If you are interested in more information please email me at kayeats@ucalgary.ca. Please include your year of study, department (or intended department) and if you have previous experience with this or a similar event. This is a popular event to volunteer with and I will be giving preference to students that respond first. Please RSVP by March 9th. Thanks a lot.
