Welcome back!
Well, it’s that time of year again. Get ready to buy your textbooks,
sharpen your pencils and head back to class. On behalf of the Civil
Engineering Undergraduate Society (CEUS) and the Department of Civil
Engineering, I’d like to welcome you to the 2005/2006 academic year!
CEUS is excited to be taking a new approach this year, with renewed status
as a Student’s Union (SU) Club, a new constitution, and a new
organizational set up. I’d like to introduce this year’s CEUS Council:
President – Allison Clavelle
Vice President Academic – Scott McKean
Vice President Communications and Student Affairs – Erin Thomson
Vice President External – to be determined
Co Vice President Operations and Finance (Finance) - Joni-Lei Cardona
Co Vice President Operations and Finance (Operations) – Dan Krejcik-Rose
Vice President Social – Megan Cropper
CSCE Representative – Maria Campanelli
Internship Representative – Carolyn Turcotte
Third Year Representative – Laura Ritchie
Spirit Representatives – Ozzy Khan
– Vicki Mitchell
– Carolyn Baker
On the morning of September 12 from 7:00 to 12:00 this council will be
ready to meet with you at a breakfast hosted by the faculty and staff of
the Department of Civil Engineering. During the breakfast you will have
the opportunity to meet many of your professors, and to tell us, the CEUS
council, what you want to see over the year.
One very, very important thing about September 12, is that it is your
first opportunity to buy your CEUS membership, and to go to class, I
guess. Members of the CEUS council will be available throughout the day
to provide you with this very important school supply! CEUS memberships
are $40 again this year, with $15 going to secure you an ESS membership
and $5 making you a student member of the Canadian Society of Civil
Engineers (CSCE). Providing joint memberships allows CEUS, Student CSCE,
and ESS to offer you the best combination of benefits. ESS offers
discounts at the ESS store, organizes cabarets, and various events
throughout the year, as some examples.
CEUS will be using your fees, as well as other funds raised throughout the
year, to provide services, such as printer pages, the exam bank,
affordable photocopying, to organize events like the holiday and year end
dinners, and to provide new academic resources like tutorials and a
reference library for members. Printer pages will be available through
the CEUS store this year, at a cost of $0.05 per page for members, and
$0.10 for non-members. CEUS is also committed to listening to your
requests, and doing our best to make your year amazing, both academically
and socially!
After you purchase your CEUS membership on September 12, you will be able
to sign up for desks. Desks are included with your CEUS membership, or,
if you do not wish to purchase a membership, you may pay a $50
administration fee to receive a desk. This fee will ensure that CEUS is
able to take responsibility for the administration of the home rooms and
for any damages and vandalism that occur through the year.
Keys to the homeroom and computer labs can be obtained at the welcome
breakfast on September 12. If you cannot make it to the breakfast, they
will be available from Chrissy Thatcher at the Civil Engineering office on
the 2nd floor of F block. A $50 cash deposit is required for keys.
This year the Transportation Association of Canada is holding its Annual
General Meeting and Conference in Calgary at the Telus Convention Centre
from September 18th – 22nd . This conference will bring together over
600 movers and shakers in the transportation engineering community for
four days of sessions, workshops and networking opportunities. Because of
the strategic alliance between TAC and CSCE, CEUS/CSCE members are invited
to attend this conference at no cost. Not only does this provide a great
opportunity to see what a first rate technical conference is all about,
but this presents a wonderful opportunity for students to meet potential
employers, and vice versa! The Department of Civil Engineering has
arranged for 25 student attendees per day for each day of the conference.
If you are interested in attending this conference, you can sign up at the
breakfast on September 12, or contact Dr. Lynne Cowe Falls
(lcowefal at ucalgary.ca) as soon as possible.
Also available on September 12 will be our amazing, incredibly hot Civil
Frosh week gear. Be sure to bring a few bucks so we can hook you up and
make this the best Frosh Week in recent memory (for Civil anyway). Clear
out some time in your schedule that first week to take advantage of the
events ESS will be planning and to get out and make the frosh feel
welcome. We’ve all been there, after all.
If you can’t make it in on September 12, there will be lots of other
opportunities to buy your membership, get your desks, and get involved.
Just approach any CEUS member and they will be able to help you out. As
the year progresses, you can always approach CEUS council members with any
ideas or concerns.
Personally, I’m very, very excited to meet everyone. Please come up and
talk to me absolutely any time and I’ll be excited to talk about what
you’d like to see this year, or even just to chat! I am always available
at alclavel at ucalgary.ca, and I’ll do my best to answer your emails as
quickly as possible.
See you in the fall!
Allison Clavelle
CEUS President, 2005/2006
