The Western Engineering Competition (WEC) is an annual event that invites
engineering students from ten different schools from across Western Canada
to compete in a variety of competitions including design, communications,
debate, and consulting. Students also have a chance to attend industry
tours and explore the night life of the hosting city. The next WEC is
January 18 to 22, 2006 and will be hosted in Calgary.

The competition is a student organized event and we are looking for
competition directors to join our team. The directors will be responsible
for planning and running their respective competition. The competition
directors that we are looking for, along with a brief description of their
competition, are as follows:

Junior Design Director – Teams of four have approximately 4-6 hours to
design and build a device that fulfills a certain task revealed the day of
the competition. This competition is for first and second year
engineering students. The director will be responsible for developing the
design topic, the rules, judging criteria, and will also run the
competition.

Senior Design Director – Same as junior design but with significantly
greater difficulty and approximately a 12-15 hour design and building time
frame. This competition is for third and fourth year engineering
students. The competition director will have the same responsibilities as
listed above.

Debate Director – Standard debate rules and topics apply. The director
will be responsible for developing the debate topics and will run the
competition.

Communications and Entrepreneurial Design Director – Participants in the
communications competition prepare a presentation on a technical subject
prior to the competition. Participants in the entrepreneurial design
competition construct a device that demonstrates a solution to an
engineering problem. This is similar to the fourth year design project
and is done prior to the competition. The director chosen will primarily
be responsible for the smooth running of the two competitions.

Consulting Engineering Director– This is a new competition. Teams of four
will have approximately 4-5 hours to devise a theoretical solution to an
engineering problem revealed the day of the competition. The problem can
be more involved than junior and senior design since there is no building
involved. The teams will present their solution to the judges, following
the competition. The tasks required of the director are similar to that
of junior design. The director will need to develop the design topic, the
rules, judging criteria, and will also run the competition.

If one of these positions interests you, please apply to
ashley at wec2006.wesst.ca by Friday, June 1st, with the following items:

-Position of interest. If you are interested in more than one, please
rank them from the most to the least of interest.
-Resume
-State any experience relevant to your competition (ie. WEC, CEC, Debate)
-Briefly state your academic and extracurricular commitments for this
summer and next year.
-E-mail address and phone number

The positions are of varying time commitment. Please ensure that you will
be able to dedicate enough time to the position. There may be a few more
opportunities to volunteer for WEC; look for an e-mail to be sent out in
the fall semester.

I will contact the directors who receive positions by the middle of June.
Work on the positions will officially begin in September; although some
preparation work over the summer will be encouraged. If you have any
questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Ashley Court
