Friday 1st March, Goldsmiths, University of London. Nature, Material and Aspects of Identity and Creation Dr Berta Joncus (Welcome Address). A collaboration between the Music Dept., Goldsmiths, University of London and Seian University (Japan), with funding from the Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The project involves an exploration of the relationships between art and nature, as expressed through different media (sound art and visual art), and represented through different cultures (Western and Japanese). It involves artists, musicians and philosophers. The project is called Shizengaku which is the Japanese title for Aristotle's Physics - a book that analyses change and flux in the natural world, and suggests new approaches to ecological aesthetics. On the Japanese side the participants include the internationally famous artist Shuji Okada, and the philosophers Mariko Kaname. From Goldsmiths' Music Department we have the sound artist John Drever, the philosopher Anthony Pryer, and the musicologist Naomi Matsumoto (who is coordinating the project). This project involves a major series events in two countries across two years.
