Chacmool Members,

This email contains many opportunities for volunteering and extracurricular
events. We apologize for the length of this email in advance but please
consider many of these opportunities for not just Chacmool but for your
academic careers!

Bake Sale: Our Conference committee is doing some fundraising this week on
Tuesday and Wednesday Oct 6th & 7th. We are looking for some baked goods to
be donated, and also people to occupy the bake sale table for any period of
time on one of those days. Either of these will count towards volunteer
hours as well as specific hours towards the conference. Remember that 8
hours volunteered totalled towards the conference allows you to attend for
free! [If you bake any goods, please write a list of ingredients for health
reasons]. Do not forget to at least stop by and support the bake sale! We
will be located in Science B just before you walk into the tunnel towards
MacHall.

Noon Hour: Every week there is a noon hour lecture put on by the
Anthropology and Archaeology Department. For the month of October, Chacmool
will be supplying snacks for the noon hour. However, we usually seek
volunteers to bring snacks themselves to the noon hour instead, and we give
volunteer hours for doing this. The best part is, Chacmool will reimburse
you for the snacks!! Seriously, all you have to do is go buy some cookies on
campus and drop them off in the Chacmool office and then we give you money
back and volunteer hours. How easy is that?!

CHACMOOL CONFERENCE: The 48th Chacmool Conference is officially looking for
volunteers now for the conference November 11th - 14th. Chacmool members get
first dibs at volunteer hours too. We will not be accepting volunteers that
are not members for another 2 weeks so hurry up, otherwise the good spots
will be filled up! Remember, the conference is a good time to meet fellow
volunteers which are mostly Chacmool and archaeology/anthropology majors,
and also to meet international archaeologists and network (grades are not
everything, networking is HUGE). Signup sheets are outside our office ES 826
or you can email us at chacmool at ucalgary.ca <mailto:chacmool at ucalgary.ca>
Please write your name, email, and your first and second preferences for
volunteering and the dates/times you are available.

Call for Next Year Conference Chairs: We are calling for abstracts for ideas
for next year's 49th Chacmool Conference. Let's get serious here, being a
student who is the chair (organizer) of a large conference is going to look
amazing on your CV for your academic career! But it requires a lot of work.
If you would like to be the chair or are intrigued by the idea come talk to
Chacmool. You can have a friend who is a co-chair and you won't be alone!
There will also be grad students and faculty organizers who will guide you
on the committee as well as other students. Due date for abstracts is
November 1st and the winning topic will be announced at this year's
conference. The Chacmool team even came up with some topic areas you could
use towards your abstract:

- Sex.

- Time.

- Partying and Ceremonies.

- Taboo.

- Children.

- Symbolism.

Feel free to use these ideas or come up with your own. Come and chat with
any of us execs or if you would like to sit on this year's conference
committee for a meeting or two to get a feel on what responsibilities are
required then you are always welcome to join and we will set that up for
you.

Archaeology Society of Alberta Casino night: The ASA is closely associated
with the archaeology department at the UofC. On December 3rd and 4th they
are hosting a Casino Night. They are looking for volunteers to help out and
experience what it is like to work in a fast paced environment in an effort
to raise money for the Association. You will also have a chance to meet
Alberta CRM (Cultural Resource Management) archaeologist that you can
network with. These people are contacts you can have for when you are
looking for a summer job or a job after graduation in archaeology.
Volunteering for this will put your name out there in a close knit
archaeology community that is Alberta archaeology (even close provincial
archaeology). Please contact Chacmool or Scott Graham the ASA student
advisor (coincidentally your Chacmool President) at stgraham at ucalgary.ca
<mailto:stgraham at ucalgary.ca>

We hope your consider these opportunities that we provide to help you all
succeed,

Chacmool
