While traveling along this trail, human groups stopped at resource patches and important landmarks, leaving evidence of their passing in the form of campsites, kill sites, isolated finds and artifact scatters, stone alignments and rock art. In order to study human movement along the trail and settlement patterns in its vicinity, it is first necessary to analyze the geographic location of the trail itself. This presentation will discuss ideas about movement in the Northwestern Plains context, examine the historical and archaeological evidence for the Old North Trail, and discuss use of least-cost path analysis within a geographic information system to model the route of the trail itself. Finally, where differences exist between the location of least-cost paths and the course of the Old North Trail reconstructed from historic and archaeological records, the ?pull? factors that may have been moving human groups away from the most efficient route across the landscape will be explored. Lunch time Speaker 2. General Meeting 3. Career Fair 4. The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award 1. Archaeology Department Noon Hour Lecture Series Speaker: Chuck Ramsay (Environmental Manager, Delcon Corp.) Where: Earth Sciences 859 When: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 12:00-1:00 pm Encounters with Industrial Archaeology Where do you draw the line on what is valuable archaeological information and what is 'junk'? This depends largely on the context of the site, situation and time, as well as the history, politics and background of the parties involved. As a consulting archaeologist, decisions and lines have to be drawn all the time. Industrial archaeology started mostly as a reaction to developments impacting 'old' mines, mills, and factories during the 1950s in Britain. These sites represented a part of Great Britain's 'Industrial Revolution' and were icons of this history. Besides preservation of sites, archaeology methods and techniques may be applied to record, help evaluate and better understand these sites. Amazingly little or no written information is available for some industrial sites. The study of these types of sites can reveal innovations and technologies, provide information on ethnic or social influences, and reflect economic change or adaptations. 2. Chacmool General Meeting Where: Earth Sciences 859 When: Friday, March 1, 2013 from 1:00 to 1:50 pm Hope to see you there. The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award Deadline: April 15th, 2013 Message from: Canadian Archaeology Association?s Student Committee (SC), ?On behalf of the SC I am emailing to inform students about The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award. This award, valued at $250, honors Daniel Weetaluktuk and may be given annually to an undergraduate and/or graduate student at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Archaeological Association. This year?s meeting will be held in Whistler from the 15th to the 19th of May (visit: http://canadianarchaeology.com/caa/annual-meeting). The Daniel Weetaluktuk Award would make a valuable addition to student CVs as winning papers are also offered an opportunity for publication in the Canadian Journal of Archaeology. In recent years relatively few applications have been submitted. It may be that few students become aware of the award in time for the deadline. For this reason, it is important to note that the deadline for application is April 15th, 2013. For more information on the award please visit the CAA?s website (http://www.canadianarchaeology.com/caa/about/awards/daniel-weetaluktuk-award) or contact Dr. Gary Coupland (coupland@chass.utoronto.ca).?
