Greetings fellow Chacmoolians,

We have much and more to tell you this week, as there are a plethora of
great events and opportunities coming up quickly. So without further ado:

1. Chacmool/GASA Party
2. Career Fair
3. Noon Hour Lectures
4. Student Activities Fund
5. Canadian Archaeology Association Student Committee Events
6. TERA Job Opportunities
7. Chacmool Executive Elections
8. Celebratory Party
9. Greek & Roman Studies Scholarship
10. Co-Curricular Record Newsletter

1. This coming Friday (March 16) will be host to a joint Chacmool/GASA
party to celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day. All Chacmool members
and friends are invited to drop by ES 859 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM and partake
in beer, wine, and tasty snackfoods amongst fellow archaeologists from
around the department, including undergrads, graduate students, and
faculty members. Food and entry are free, and we’ll do our best to keep
the prices on drinks as low as we can.

2. On Saturday, March 31, we will be holding the annual Chacmool Career
Fair in ES 859. So get those resumes and CVs all polished up and come by
from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM to meet with representatives of some of the very
best in Alberta CRM companies. Try to make it on time if you can, as each
company will give a brief introduction/talk at the onset of the event,
followed by time to mill around, see what’s what in the industry, and get
your name and resumes out there. Snacks and coffee will be provided.

3. The Noon Hour Lectures continue this week with our very own Dr.
Karthryn Reese-Taylor’s talk titled: “The Origins of Maya Kingship During
The Middle Preclassic Period”. Come by on Wednesday, March 14th at noon
and learn something new and fascinating about Mesoamerican archaeology.
For those interested in reading a bit more, or just in keeping track as to
who’s up next in the Noon Hour Lecture Series, visit
http://arky.ucalgary.ca/home/events.
4. For those who might be a bit strapped for cash in the dense financial
jungle that is academia, a hope is in sight: The Student Activities Fund
is a new collaboration between the Students' Union Quality Money program
and the University of Calgary. The fund will disperse up to $65,000 every
year to qualifying undergraduate and graduate students. There are two
application periods remaining in 2012, with deadlines of April 1 and Oct.

5. The student committee of the Canadian Archaeological Association (CAA)
has a number of events which it wishes to share with any interested
archaeology students:
“I) The call for papers for the 2012 CAA conference has been released and
the details are available at the conference website
(http://canadianarchaeology.com/caa/annual-meeting/montreal-2012). The
conference will be held from May 16-20th, 2012, and several interesting
sessions have already been suggested. In past years (and there is no
expected changes for the upcoming conference) the CAA has provided
financial assistance for travel for student members who are presenting a
paper or poster. This funding is applied for after the conference, and has
generally covered most of, if not the entirety of, the cost to travel to
the conference.

The student committee is trying to organize professional development
events for students during the conference. Last year's publishing workshop
was well attended and we are currently developing a similar workshop for
the upcoming conference.

II) The CAA also has the Daniel Weetaluktuk Award. There are two $250.00
prizes for the best undergraduate and graduate paper submitted. More
details are available at the website
(canadianarchaeology.com/caa/annual-meeting/montreal-2012). In the past
there has been limited entries for this award, so it a great opportunity
for students.

III) We are trying to create a better working relationship with student
organizations from across Canada. We are developing several ideas, but are
also looking for input from students and student organizations. If you
have suggestions or projects that you'd like to see the CAA student
committee to become involved with please feel free to pass them on. We
would also love to hear about the events that your club holds. This can
help us generate ideas or pass your information on to other university
clubs.”

6. Although the Chacmool Career Fair is fast approaching, we understand
that there might be some of you eager to get that extra step in early.
Well good news! TERA has announced some job opening for archaeologists for
summer field assistants, TEK facilitators, and a Heritage Resources Admin
Assistant. TERA’s website is www.teraenv.com, and anyone interested in
further information is asked to contact Brett Watson at
bkwatson81 at gmail.com.

7. All good things must come to an end. Which is my way of saying that the
tyrannical rule of this year’s Chacmool Executive Committee is running its
course, and it will soon be time for elections to see who gets the nice
comfy office for next year. 4 positions will be available: President, Vice
President, Treasurer, and Events Coordinator. Information will be posted
both online and around the ARKY department detailing each position’s
responsibilities and expectations, and a sign-up sheet will magically
appear outside our office (ES 826) on March 16th for anyone interested in
running for election. The sign-up sheets will be up until March 30th, and
voting will be held from March 31st to April 5th. Feel free to drop by the
Chacmool office during office hours if you have any questions or concerns.

8. To help welcome in our newly elected overlords (whomever they should
be), we will be holding a Beer and Nachos celebration party on April 5th
at the Den. Everyone is invited, whether your won the election, came a
narrow second, or didn’t bother to run at all. The first round of drinks
and snacks for club members are on us!

9. From the faculty of Greek and Roman Studies comes news of the Wigham
Family Scholarship: “The Wigham Family Scholarship in conjunction with the
Humphrey-McLeod Award, is awarded to a student planning a period of
overseas study or field-work in the Mediterranean or Europe, normally in
the Spring/Summer Term, and can be used to defray associated travel
expenses.” For those whose curiosity has been piqued, I have attached the
poster to this email.

10. The good people at the Officer of Leadership and Student Engagement
have created a brief newsletter detailing information about the
Co-Curricular Record, which has been attached to this email for those
interested. It includes important dates and website info for forms and
FAQs, so it is definitely worth a quick glance. It’s pretty short, so it
won’t take much time, and it’s well worth it.

That’s all for this week,
CHACMOOL ARCHAEOLOGY ASSOCIATION
