Hello Chacmoolians,

Welcome back to another semester, and we hope you’ve all had a great break
and ready to go!

1 – New Office Hours
2 – Sports!
3 – Noon Hour Lectures (and volunteers)
4 – Wine & Cheese
5 – New Events

1) As the new semester brings schedule changes for us all, the office
hours for the Chacmool executives changes as well. For the winter semester
the Chacmool office (ES 826) will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Friday (note: not Thursday) from 12:00 to 1:00. If you wish to meet with
us at any other time, please just send us an email and we can arrange
something to accommodate.

2) Squash! Not just a delicious fruit, but also a fantastic game. For
those squash veterans amongst you, and those of you who have never seen
the inside of a squash court, we welcome you all to come out and play with
other members of the department. We are hoping to run a Chacmool Squash
Tournament sometime late in the semester (date TBA) and anyone will be
welcome to participate, but until then we try to play throughout the week,
and you’re invited to join us. We usually play Monday, Wednesday, and
Fridays at 4:00, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00. If you’d like
to join in just let us know and we’ll make sure to books enough courts.

3) The Noon Hour Lectures return! To kick things off Jennifer Chmilar will
be presenting this Wednesday, January 17, in ES 859 at (you guessed it)
noon! However we are currently lacking volunteers to help out by bringing
snacks to the lectures and making sure critically important things like
coffee are prepared. There will be a sign up sheet outside the Chacmool
office (ES 826) for anyone interested in helping out. Remember: if you
bring receipts we will reimburse you for the cost, and these hours can be
put towards you co-curricular record.

4) The much-celebrated Chacmool Wine & Cheese returns again! By popular
demand we will be hosting yet another casual get-together in ES 859, this
time on February 3rd. As usual there will be a plethora of cheeses (all
free), some other light snacks, and a good selection of modestly-priced
wines. It’s always a great time, and if you don’t believe me, then just
ask any of the 50+ people who dropped by last time. Definitely not worth
missing!

5) Beer & wings, movie nights, board game evenings, jousting tournaments

okay, probably not that last one (could you imagine the paperwork
required?!), but think of the possibilities! We’d like you input in what
events you’d like Chacmool to run this semester, and in the future. Just
drop us an email telling us what kind of thing you’d like to see us do,
and if we have the demand for it, we’ll try to make it happen! To give
your brains a kick-start, previous events included: museum tours,
flint-knapping workshops, gingerbread contests, graveyard tours, and a
host of other things, some only tangentially related to archaeology (which
is fine with us!).

Until next time, STAY WARM! (I’m serious, it’s bloody cold out there!)
