From Chacmool at ucalgary.ca Sun Oct 9 22:43:59 2011 From: Chacmool at ucalgary.ca (Chacmool Archaeology Association) Date: Sun Oct 9 22:44:12 2011 Subject: [Chacmool-l] Talks, drinks, and movies to come Message-ID: <756f1140ada82ac50bb3fceabce39037.squirrel@webmail.ucalgary.ca> Hello Chacmoolians, Happy Thanksgiving and we hope that you are all enjoying copious amounts of turkey (or your gluttonous meal of choice). This week we have consolidated our events to one succinct day: Wednesday! This Wednesday (October 12) the noon hour lectures return again with Mike Moloney bringing his experience in maritime archaeology to the fore with his presentation on "The Spatial Syntax of Ships". Posters have been put up around the department with more information should you be on the fence about attending, but if that's the case then clearly you haven't heard one of Mike's talks before. Fortunately this can be rectified this Wednesday in ES 859 at 12:00! And this Wednesday evening we have our first Chacmool Beer & Wings Night at the Den. Drop by at 6:00, and the first pitchers and plates of wings are on us for Chacmool members. Enjoy a drink and a snack after a long day of classes and noon hour lectures with some friends in the department, and if you're quick you don't even have to pay! This will be a recurring event, every first Wednesday night of the month (the next one being November 2). The future holds yet more fun, for the last Thursday of this month (October 27) will play host to our first monthly Chacmool Movie Night. Once again this will be a free event, and for those of you with club memberships there will be free pizza and pop. We're still discussing which movie it will be this month, so feel free to drop by our office (ES 826) to voice your opinion, or just drop by on the 27th and have fun in ES 859 at 6:00. That's all for the moment, we now return you to your regularly planned festivities. ~Chacmool Archaeology Association From chacmool at ucalgary.ca Tue Oct 18 14:19:53 2011 From: chacmool at ucalgary.ca (Chacmool) Date: Tue Oct 18 14:20:19 2011 Subject: [Chacmool-l] Oct 18, 2011 Message-ID: <000f01cc8dd3$4c1433b0$e43c9b10$@ca> Greetings Chacmoolians, I hope midterm and deadline season is going well for you all! Here's a quick update on some upcoming events: 1. Noon hour 2. Squash! 3. UWO Anthropology Student Journal 2011 - 2012 Call for papers 4. Open House <- Volunteers Needed! 5. ASA Lecture 6. Movie Night 1. Noon hour The noon hour lecture this week (Wednesday October 19, 2011) is 'Lessons in Public Engagement and Landscape Archaeology: The 2011 Pine Coulee Survey Project", given by Lindsay Amundsen-Meyer a PhD Student in the department. As usual, it will be in ES 859 from 12:00-13:00. Coffee and snacks will be provided. We hope to see you there! 2. Squash! You may have heard word around the department about something big and exciting going down... well if that something is about a competitive squash tournament, it's TRUE! Scheduled (albeit loosely) for the end of March, we will be getting together for the next 6 months to hash out our frustrations and build some major (or minor) skills on the court. We will also be having a TBD competition (with prizes!) right before our bodies are wracked with the pain of final exams. If you're interested in getting your game on, let one of the executives know or shoot us an e-mail so we can get a sense for who is planning on being in attendance. All skill levels are welcome including those who have never played. It's going to be a lot of fun, so we hope you'll consider joining us in the months to come! 3. UWO Anthropology Student Journal 2011 - 2012 Call for papers Below is a copy of an email sent to the department: Dear Anthropology Students, Are you interested in having a research paper published in a peer-reviewed student journal? Totem, The University of Western Ontario Anthropology Department's student-run peer-reviewed journal, currently welcomes manuscript submissions from both undergraduate and graduate students for its 20th volume. Last year was the first year Totem began publishing online, making student research in anthropology available to a much wider audience. We encourage your participation in the publication of Totem's 20th volume. This is a great opportunity to get your research published. The Call for Papers is open until January 31, 2012 (available to view online at: http://ir.lib.uwo.ca/totem/call_for_papers.pdf ). For more information on article submission, please visit our website (http://ir.lib.uwo.ca/totem) or contact the editors at totemjournal@gmail.com Jennifer Morgan & Andrew Wade, Co-editors Totem: The University of Western Ontario Journal of Anthropology 4. Open House <- Volunteers Needed! Dr. Richard Callaghan is looking for volunteers to help with the open house on Saturday November 9. Prospective students often find approaching fellow students very helpful. If you're interested please let us know and we'll forward on more information! Get some hours towards validating your co-curricular record! 5. ASA Lecture The ASA lecture this week is being given by Barney Reeves (Lifeways of Canada) and is entitled "Archaeology of Alberta: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow". Coffee and snacks will be provided, we hope to see you there! 6. Movie night Come join us for a fun evening of movie watching in ES 859 on October 27th. Details will be provided later this week! Chacmool's first Movie Night begins this week, and we're starting off with the famous Jurassic Park (to allow further confusion between us and paleontologists). The movie begins this Thursday (October 27th) in ES 859 at 7:30 PM, and pizza and pop will be on us for any Chacmool members. For the squash players among you, or those who are interested in something a bit more active with fellow archaeologists, why not drop by the squash courts at the university on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning from 10 - 11 and work out some of those midterm frustrations? Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the sport, or have never touched a racket before in your life, all are welcome to come out and give it a try in a friendly atmosphere. Want to test your skills with something to shoot for? Good news! Come late March/early April Chacmool will be hosting a squash tournament, and there will be prizes. Details will be forthcoming as soon as they are finalized, but until then please feel free to email us any questions about coming out and playing some squash. The noon hour lecture this week will be Cara Tremain's talk: "One small loot for man, one giant loot for mankind: illegal excavation in ancient Maya architecture". As per the norm it will be held this Wednesday in Es 859 at 12:00, and coffee and snacks will be provided. On November 5th the university is hosting an Open House for prospective students, and Dr. Richard Callaghan (Undergraduate Advisor for the Archaeology Department) is looking for any volunteers who would be willing to come out and help represent our department. Prospective students often find it more comfortable to talk to students rather than the more intimidating professors, and so we're just looking for anyone who would like to spend some time talking about our archaeology at the U of C to those who might be curious. If you're interested please contact Dr. Callaghan: rcallagh@ucalgary.ca Also on the agenda for next week is the next Beer & Wings night. Wednesday November 2nd (that's next Wednesday, not this Wednesday) we will again be giving out free beer and free wings to the first few Chacmool members who drop by the Den at 6:30 for a purely social activity. As November approaches, so too does the great Chacmool Archaeology Conference, organized and run by undergraduate students from the U of C, and bringing in archaeologists and research from around the globe. This year's conference, "Climates of Change" will be held on November 8th to the 12th, so don't miss this wonderful opportunity to see the latest work in archaeology presented by some of the most accomplished men and women of the discipline. Details can be found at the conference's website: arky.ucalgary.ca/chacmool2011/ Finally, one little request from the executives of Chacmool: is there anyone knowledgeable of the ways of website design/maintenance who would be willing to drop by our office (ES 826) and help us out with some issues we've been having with our website? It would be very much appreciated.
