<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt"><span style="color:black;mso-ligatures:none">We are seeking media and communication scholars, academic librarians, and copyright staff who may be interested in participating in the
<b>focus group phase</b> of our study, <b>Overcoming Copyright Impediments to Scholarship in Media-Intensive Fields.
</b>Led by Aaron Taylor and Rumi Graham at the University of Lethbridge, this study is conducted by a research team that evolved from the work of a group of faculty, librarians, and copyright specialists who co-authored a 2022
</span><span style="mso-ligatures:none"><a href="https://opus.uleth.ca/items/5a307159-f04a-435c-9d3e-bd503cce521e"><span style="color:#1155CC">report</span></a><span style="color:black"> on how some of the problems copyright poses for media scholarship might
be alleviated. </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt"><span style="color:black;mso-ligatures:none">Our study seeks to understand the practices and views of media and communication scholars, and academic librarians and copyright staff, regarding copyright and the
use, reuse, and preservation of media content in Canadian higher education. We will work with these two scholarly communities to build codes of best practices for applying fair dealing and other user rights in copyright law to common uses of media. The initial
phase of our study involved a survey of these two communities.</span><span style="mso-ligatures:none"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt"><span style="color:black;mso-ligatures:none">We are using focus groups to look more closely at some of the ideas that came up in the survey we conducted in the first phase of our study. The focus groups will
be conducted in English or French over <b>May to June 2026</b> on Zoom. To participate, you must be 18 years or older and understand English or French. You will be either a media or communication scholar, an academic librarian, or copyright staff at a Canadian
post-secondary school, and ideally you will have completed our earlier survey.</span><span style="mso-ligatures:none"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt"><span style="color:black;mso-ligatures:none">Each focus group will take about two hours to complete. In the first half of each focus group, a Canadian legal scholar will present a copyright refresher and brief
Q&A session. In the second half, participants will be invited to discuss some questions and scenarios involving copyright and using, reusing, and preserving media content in educational and research settings.</span><span style="mso-ligatures:none"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

d'auteur concernant le droit d'auteur et l'utilisation, la réutilisation et la préservation des contenus médiatiques dans l'enseignement supérieur au Canada. Nous travaillerons avec ces deux communautés scientifiques afin d'élaborer des codes de meilleures
pratiques pour l'application de l'utilisation équitable et des autres droits des utilisateurs dans le cadre de la loi sur le droit d'auteur quant aux utilisations courantes des contenus audiovisuels. La phase initiale de notre étude a consisté en une enquête
auprès de ces deux communautés.</span><span lang="FR-CA" style="mso-ligatures:none"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
